About the property

Luxury Horse Property in the Sierra Foothills

Words will escape you when you drive through the entrance of this breathtaking property. This beautiful 20 acre estate is unlike anything you will find in the sierra foothills or even the state of California. Custom home built in a New England style begs enjoyment and relaxation. Enjoy sitting on the covered porch overlooking a pristine landscaped pond and listen to fits of laughter as your friends and family jump from the dock and splash around in the crisp water. Relax in the garden with a good book or get some exercise on a hike or a bike ride and catch a glimpse of the Bear River. Stop and nuzzle velvety noses along the way (this is a horse property) or pick a few blackberries and bake a pie in a beautiful cook's kitchen. Get the competitive juices flowing with a game of croquet on the manicured back lawn or head to the horseshoe pit. Unwind by the fire or hot tub and feel as if you were transported to a spa. Take an ultra refreshing outdoor shower and you won’t be disappointed!

Feeling Adventurous? Try wine tasting at Mount Vernon Winery or visit historic Old Town Auburn Nevada City or Lake Tahoe. Breathtaking hikes and top notch skiing is a mere hour drive on Interstate 80. Fabulous golf courses abound in every direction. Pets welcome here but it should be noted that they may never want to leave. First time on the market so come and have a look for yourself and start making your plans!

About Megan DeWeerdt

No matter how far up in the corporate ladder you get, you are still reporting to someone! I retired from 'corporate restructuring ' in 1996 at the age of 52. I wanted, for once, to do build something I could say 'I did it my way.' It has taken 16 years of complete joy to build this serene and private ranch. I felt it was time to share it and my horses, dogs and mini donkeys with others that seek this private and quiet vacation. Horses enrich my life and I hope they do yours when you are here. I promise a unique experience. You won't want to leave!

Megan DeWeerdt purchased this estate in 1999

Why Megan DeWeerdt chose Gold Country & High Sierra

Because it is not a property, but a ranch all to yourself.

What makes this estate unique

Beautiful private ranch with lake pool.

  • 5 of 5

We spent an excellent week here - 2 families with 3 children per family. Very comfortable and well equipped.

The lake/pool was lovely and the children spent hours every day playing in it and spotting turtles. They also loved the horses and donkeys.

A problem with the air con was dealt with swiftly and professionally, whilst the owners were very discrete.

We would definitely go back again! A fabulous place.

Nothing tops this!

  • 5 of 5

I hesitate to lavish much more additional praise on this property for fear that it will get booked up and prevent us from returning for another visit. Finding a house and grounds spacious enough to accommodate our family of three generations (8 adults and 6 children) has always been a challenge, but this spot was the perfect solution. In 90+ degree weather, we spent almost more time in and at the pond than we did indoors! And when we did return to the house, it had everything we needed to make our weekend comfortable, relaxing, and special. The grandchildren all loved interacting with the animals (horses, donkey, cat, dogs) and are begging to return. They are not the only ones--it's definitely someplace we all hope to visit again.

Another lovely visit

  • 5 of 5

This our family's second long-weekend trip to Cape Cod in California. We love the house, the lake, the porch, the homey decor, the air conditioning, and the privacy.

It's such a wonderful oasis that our family unanimously chose to come back again for our annual family vacation. Who knows... maybe there will be a third. If you want a house that has tons of open space, nice bathrooms, and wonderful surroundings, you've found it. Megan is so wonderful to work with. The only thing missing is a basket on a clothes line that connects the house to the beach so we could have snacks and drinks sent down to us so we'd never have to leave the lake.

Your group should have an amazing time.

This is a wonderful, happy place for a family vacation.

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful place to be. The house is big and comfortable and easy to stay in. Our family of 6 adults and 4 children found places to play, read, relax and -- most of all - have delicious fun. The kitchen is well-equipped and spacious and open to the main rooms. We could all convene together to cook and talk and share good times and good food. There is a big dining area, a big front room, a separate play room stocked with toys, books on all the shelves, and comfortable bedrooms and bathrooms to fit everyone's needs. The outside is exquisite. In addition to the expansive front porch with Adirondack chairs and a big table for breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, there are separate areas to find sun or shade, a big barn, beautiful horses and two little donkeys to see and to feed. Down a lovely landscaped path is a beautiful and beautifully maintained pond, equipped with a row boat, paddle board, a kayak, and a pier for floating, swimming, and diving. The owners, Dan and Megan, are kind and attentive and also very respectful of the privacy of their guests. We were very impressed and very grateful for their quick responses to questions. They are wonderful hosts who care about their property and about about the people who stay there. We highly recommend this house for happy family vacations.

Bucolic and wonderfully accommodating setting

  • 5 of 5

We spent an entire April week at the Overhill house and were enchanted by the property each day. The house is large and well equipped to accommodate multiple couples and family of all ages. We made full use of the kitchen and grill/stove each day for some amazing dinners.

Toward the end of the week, we hostd our son's rehearsal dinner on the back lawn, with a campfire warming in the background. The young guests kept commenting on the truly amazing and surprising setting. In fact we had to herd them up from the pond chairs to get the dinner started. Lots of "How did you find this?" questions. The house seems to expand the needs of the guests.

There are wonderful places to gather in the large kitchen and comfortable couches to fall into at the end of the day, every night someone had to be woken up from a chair to go to bed. The large property has many quiet places to get away, hiking along the private road, benches near the pond, coffee on the front porch. The property owners were always available for a quick question and accessible on the property when asked, delightful and accommodating. How did we get so lucky?!

This is a special and private retreat yet very close to all kinds of recreation that the Lake Tahoe area has to offer. Plenty of fun to be had in Nevada City, Grass Valley and locally in Auburn. Swimming, horseback riding, mountain biking....it's all here to enjoy
