About the property

W5992 Big Elk Road - Phillips, WI. This private home is nestled among 14 acres of wetlands and just 4 miles from Phillips (approximate population of 2,500). The Phillips School Forest trail is only two minutes away and provides 3.5 miles of hiking, biking, snowshoeing, birdwatching, and skiing – groomed for classic and skate skiers.

Make Pine Place your snowmobile destination! Trail access is only 0.25 miles down the road connecting you to over 500 miles of trails that meander through the beautiful Price County and Chequamegon National Forests. In the summer, connect to ATV and off-road trail systems right from the doorstep. Price County offers 5 different off road trail systems, some of which are open during winter. Contact the Phillips Chamber Office for trail details at (715) 339-4100.

Make Pine Place your kayaking, canoeing or fishing base camp. Nearby lakes with public boat launches include Solberg Lake, Musser Lake, and the entire Phillips Chain. Solberg Lake is an 859-acre impoundment on Squaw Creek, a tributary to Duroy Lake, the upstream-most lake in the Phillips Chain-of-Lakes on the Elk River system.

Would you rather just unwind? Enjoy a secluded view from the three-season sun room. Take a walk through our native prairie gardens. Listen to frog calls and bird songs while kayaking the property's chain of wetlands. Strap on your snowshoes to identify animal tracks with use of our many field guides or simply pick raspberries in the garden, perhaps apples from the newly established orchard. Use Pine Place as a launch point to some of the nation's best grouse hunting. And don't forget, our guests rave about the birds so bring your binoculars to help identify our feathered friends - birding literature provided.

Although this home is one bedroom and one bathroom, the open floor plan provides an abundance of space. A full kitchen and dining area, two bars, an office area, and large living room with queen size futon for added guests. A single bed is also available in the three-season sunroom for those warm nights. Gas grill and tools are also provided for outdoor cooking. We also stock camp chairs if you'd like to sit outside around a campfire. During warm weather, there is one additional twin bed located in the three season room which can be used if you like to wake up with the sun.

There is neither a television nor internet service, so get ready to unplug and truly relax. We want to share the Northwoods with all those that have a passion for the outdoors. Come, check it out, you're always invited.

Check-in is 2:00 pm. An early check-in (8:00 am) is permitted if an incoming reservation is not scheduled for that day. Refer to the reservation calendar AND contact the property manager to verify.

About Rebecca

I lived in this home year-round until a job opportunity took me elsewhere. Now, I'd like to share this spot with people interested in the Northwoods experience. Eventually, I shall make this my permanent home again.

Our property caretakers, Eric and Rebecca are friends from my time at UW Stevens Point. They live in the area and will be able to assist you with any questions about the property before, during or after your stay. They own and operate and organic CSA produce farm. If you are in need of in-season local vegetables to prep in our fantastic kitchen during your stay, give them a call and they will be able to have a crate of fresh, local food waiting for you upon your arrival.

Rebecca purchased this house in 2009

Why Rebecca chose Northwest

The properties natural features easily lent itself for the many native plantings established since taking ownership. While the youngest prairie planting was seeded in 2013 and won't be flowering for awhile, the oldest prairie plantings are five years old and provide impressive blooms throughout the growing season. There is also a young orchard of heirloom apple and pear trees (not bearing fruit yet, hopefully soon!), with a small patch of lawn adjoining the orchard.

A wonderful quiet spot to unwind & connect with nature!

  • 5 of 5

A last minute getaway brought us to this magical place. We were celebrating our 11 year anniversary & Pine Place was just what we needed! The stress of everyday life rolls off your shoulders the moment the scent of wild burgeomont fills your senses. We rented a canoe from Crazy Loon in Phillips & they delivered it to us! We spent a number of hours exploring the bog & were surprised at how far back we were able to navigate! A must to enjoy Pine Place by water. We saw chickadees playing in the sumac, kingfishers called out & flew around & each morning & evening an immature Northern Harrier (We think) flew around the bog. Evening fires were a lovely short walk down the raspberry lined trail! The cabin is gorgeous, large & well stocked! The bed is comfy! If you are not a fan of well water, bring your own bottled water. So many places there to relax and unwind! An amazing weekend to reconnect with nature & each other! We are excited to return with our family!

Beautiful cabin and amazing views of nature

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was as beautiful as the pictures. It was clean, very well maintained, and very spacious. I loved the front porch to dry off our Drahthaar dog, Mieli, after the many swims. The kitchen contained all the necessary items for cooking. If you want to bake you will need to bring your own cookie sheets. I loved the shelves to store all the groceries. The bathroom was nice. The shower had nice water pressure. The bedroom was very spacious to store all my belongings. It has a very large closet. The bed was very soft; just the way I prefer. The porch overlooking the wetlands was my favorite spot to relax. I used the twin bed quite frequently to take a quick snooze. Mieli (dog) loved looking out the windows. I was concerned that there wasn't air conditioning but I opened all the windows and it kept the cabin very cool. We spent many hours out kayaking in the backyard (wetlands). We rented a kayak from The crazy loon in Phillips. They were very nice and will deliver and pick up kayaks for free. That was a very nice feature. Having a kayak definitely enhanced our stay and we were able to enjoy all of the beauty of the land. I especially liked that there were few mosquitos, no snakes, or annoying bugs. Mieli (dog) loved swimming along side the kayak and fetching her dummy. If you have a dog that loves water they will love it here! We did not do a lot of hiking since the wetlands occupied most of our time. The cabin is on a quiet road. We took many walks along side the quiet roads. On our way to cabin we traveled on a gravel road but that is not the only way to access cabin. Next time I would go through Phillips taking H or Forcester Rd to access cabin to avoid gravel. Oh and if you have kids don't forget about the table that has a chalkboard top to enjoy. I didn't figure this out until I read the wonderful reviews for this property in the book. I also liked that the owner frequently visits the property and has a lot of pride in making sure our experience is memorable.

Very nice

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely stay. Our only complaint would be the trees are too large outside of the sunroom and you couldn't really see anything when sitting down in there!

Natural peace

  • 5 of 5

Pine Place is a treasure. Easy to find (could be easy to miss the first pass if you're arriving at night) and conveniently a few minutes from downtown Phillips, once there you are enveloped in nature and nothing else. The house is open and spacious, fresh, clean, and centered on its asset - the great outdoors. There are plenty of beds/futons/chairs for relaxing and a nice table for playing the games you brought from home. Lighting is available in all corners of the house. Ceiling fans cool you in each room. The covered patio overlooks a wetland area chock full of birds. A nest outside the front porch welcomed four birds during our stay. With all this wildlife there is nary a sound to distract you from nature's peace. We kayaked several lakes and sections of the Flambeau River, catching small mouth bass, crappie, and a nice-sized northern. We had everything we needed. Rebecca does a nice job getting you in and out easily with her directions and check in/check out lists. It was just my husband and me this time but I would love to bring the adult children up with us next time for an unplugged vacation. Bonnie's Diner in Phillips has remarkable pies for $2-3/slice. We tried 3, and each one was better than the last. Take a 45-minute deer-riddled (we braked 3 times for darting deer in the early evening) ride to Tomahawk for Silver Birch's mouth-watering Saturday prime rib ($25). Enjoy an A & W root beer float or two. Yum! There's hiking, biking, boating, anything outdoors right here. Locals are extremely helpful and encouraging. Pine Place is NOT on a lake, so don't think you're going to have access here at this location. However, you wake up overlooking the wetlands with no boat motor distractions. You can't beat the view! We were overrun by bugs in plenty of places but NOT at Pine Place. We weren't out at night at Pine Place, though. I was tempted with the wood Rebecca (I assume) had set up for a bonfire down the mowed path a few yards from the house. Pine Place has everything you need to grill outside, cook indoors, sit and read or write, photograph, sleep, sleep, sleep, paint, play a few games, cozy up to the bar. Just remember to bring what you want to do. Pine Place has the essentials; you bring the specifics. I highly recommend you visit Pine Place if you're looking for a peaceful, beautiful, relaxing central spot where you can enjoy Wisconsin's beauty. Be sure to leave a week or weekend open for me to come back!
