About Ruth Westerbeck

Rich & I retired to Skagit County (from Bellevue, WA) to spend our retirement years in a more rural, laid-back, friendly environment. We love the area, the friendly people, great restaurants in La Conner and Anacortes, walking trails, mountains, beaches, local theater and music, etc.

We lived in the 'Guest House' while we remodeled the 'big house' where we now live. The Guest House shares a huge deck with us (screen dividers maintain privacy) and the beautiful view of the farmland of Skagit Valley and Whidbey Island and Puget Sound beyond.

Ruth Westerbeck purchased this apartment in 2010

Why Ruth Westerbeck chose Northwest & Islands

We chose the location because it is between grandkids in King County (50 miles) and those in Whatcom County (30 miles). We chose the house and guest house for the fabulous view and friendly small neighborhood. And for the privacy afforded by 2.3 acres of land.

The first year here was spent remodeling the big house and this last year spiffing up the Guest House for a rental. We love the projects!

What makes this apartment unique

The view and the location. Very close to small cities in Skagit County where there is good shopping and wonderful small shops and galleries. Easy day trips to Whidbey Island, Bellingham, Anacortes, site-seeing in the entire area.

My favorite part is a two-mile roundtrip walk up a trail through the woods along a beautiful small lake. The neighborhood dogs accompany me most days, and they are good company!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Ruth and Rich,

Thanks so much for having us! It was the perfect location for us. The girls loved soaking in the hot tub and enjoying the amazing view. Your guest house had everything we needed and really enjoyed our stay there. Will definitely recommend it to our friends and family.

Cheers,

Flanders family

Well-equiped and just the right size for us

  • 5 of 5

We (my wife, my son and I) stayed for 5 nights while visiting my parents who live in the area. The apartment was just the right size for us, and had everything that we needed. Priced slightly higher than hotels in the area, but with many conveniences that made this a home away from home. We enjoyed walking through the woods to a small lake about 15 min away. It was a cold week (snow on the ground), but the central heating system worked well. The owners were available if we had questions (and were very nice people). I expect we'll reserve this place again next time we are in the area.

Beautiful view and well-appointed destination

  • 5 of 5

The guest house is very well-appointed for travelers who hope to do a little cooking in between taking in the views (covered hot tub at sunset!) and relaxing in the loft living space or bedroom area. Everything is cozy without feeling cramped for 2 adults. If you were more than 2 you would want be already well-acquainted :). The portable gas fireplace heater in the livingroom is a nice extra touch for the winter. We happened to be staying during December, which is the trumpeter swan and snow goose migration period, which was a joy to experience both from the guest house and during drives around neighboring farmlands.

Overall, I would return to this unit. We really appreciated the owner's responsiveness prior to and during our stay, but had we not needed to reach out we would not have seen them.

The owners Rich and Ruth were awesome. The SVGH is a great place to stay and is close to anything you need in Skagit County. It would be nice to have a brighter light in the bathroom but that's all. Thank you.

Comfortable, Quiet and Clean

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 4 nights at the Westerbeck's. The apartment above the garage was super clean. We only made our breakfasts but we could have cooked dinner in the full, well equipped kitchen. The shower had excellent water pressure and plenty of hot water. The king size bed was very comfortable. The weather didn't allow us to enjoy the huge deck but we enjoyed the beautiful view from inside. Ruth welcomed us when we arrived and my husband met both Ruth and Rich on our last morning. They were always available if we had questions but we really didn't see them. We had plenty of privacy. It was very easy to find the property and it has quick access to I-5. We highly recommend this property.

Comfortable and Beautiful

Lovely hosts who have a well thought-out apartment with everything you need for a vacation stop. Large deck with great views out over the Skagit Valley. Watching the sunsets with a glass on the deck is a wonderful way to spend an evening. Peaceful. Highly recommended!

What a perfect stay!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed the stay. We were looking for a quiet place yet near enough. This fit the bill perfectly with quiet, seclusion and lots to do right around the corner. Our hosts met us on arrival, then stayed out of the way, and caught up with us when we left. What a very lovely couple and totally available if we had needed anything extra. The perfect blend...
