About Ruth Westerbeck

Rich & I retired to Skagit County (from Bellevue, WA) to spend our retirement years in a more rural, laid-back, friendly environment. We love the area, the friendly people, great restaurants in La Conner and Anacortes, walking trails, mountains, beaches, local theater and music, etc.

We lived in the 'Guest House' while we remodeled the 'big house' where we now live. The Guest House shares a huge deck with us (screen dividers maintain privacy) and the beautiful view of the farmland of Skagit Valley and Whidbey Island and Puget Sound beyond.

Ruth Westerbeck purchased this apartment in 2010

Why Ruth Westerbeck chose Northwest & Islands

We chose the location because it is between grandkids in King County (50 miles) and those in Whatcom County (30 miles). We chose the house and guest house for the fabulous view and friendly small neighborhood. And for the privacy afforded by 2.3 acres of land.

The first year here was spent remodeling the big house and this last year spiffing up the Guest House for a rental. We love the projects!

What makes this apartment unique

The view and the location. Very close to small cities in Skagit County where there is good shopping and wonderful small shops and galleries. Easy day trips to Whidbey Island, Bellingham, Anacortes, site-seeing in the entire area.

My favorite part is a two-mile roundtrip walk up a trail through the woods along a beautiful small lake. The neighborhood dogs accompany me most days, and they are good company!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Ruth and Rich,

Thanks so much for having us! It was the perfect location for us. The girls loved soaking in the hot tub and enjoying the amazing view. Your guest house had everything we needed and really enjoyed our stay there. Will definitely recommend it to our friends and family.

Cheers,

Flanders family

A Great Washington Adventure

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Mount Vernon at this very nice guest house. The owners Ruth and Rich are very gracious hosts. Their place is very clean, comfortable, and everything is there that you need. It felt just like our home away from home and to be able to just relax if you didn't feel like exploring every day. We enjoyed our visits on the deck with Ruth and Rich. Many times we were asked if all was okay with the rental and if we are having a good time. So thoughtful! Rich even had a map of the area and it was very helpful. We were here for 3 weeks and enjoyed every day of it. We wanted something that was a home base so we could travel by taking day trips and see the beauty of Washington. The guest house was perfect for that.

We saw so much and had so many different experiences checking everything out. We went up as far Canada, as far as we could go in the North Cascades. Too much snow but we got up to Ross Dam. We took the Cascade Hwy Loop and saw beautiful scenery and snowy mountains. We went to Everett and toured the Boeing Plant, very interesting.. Also went to Deception Pass on Whidbey Island and experienced the ferry system. Something different that we hadn't done. Also we took Amtrak out of Mount Vernon to Seattle for the day and went to Pike Place and the Space Needle. That was certainly an adventure. Also took Hwy 112 and then Hwy 101 down the Pacific Coast and to Olympic National Park. Spent time and learned about the little surrounding towns and what they use to be and what they are now. Of course we went to Tulip Festival and that was just gorgeous to see the many different types and colors of tulips. We also were there when the daffodils were in bloom. There was a lot of nice eating places but we ate only a few meals out. At the guest house it was equipped with being able to cook so that's mostly what we did if we weren't too tired from out and about all day. We did not use the hot tub but it was nice to know it was there if we wanted to, maybe next time. Washington is a great place to visit it has a lot to offer. Everyone we met were always very friendly. We saw and did so much in 3 weeks but still feel like we missed stuff as well. Weather was on the chilly side, cloudy, and rainy. We didn't let that stop us though-you learn to go with the flow. We had an excellent time and thank you again Ruth and Rich for being such terrific hosts. We would definitely come back here to stay!

Very Enjoyable Guest House

  • 5 of 5

This was a very comfortable guest house and a great place to call "home" for a week. We enjoyed our brief visits with Ruth and Rich, the owners. This place was nicely furnished, very clean and well stocked, and we especially liked the fireplace during our cool week there. It has nice deck areas with views to the west but it was too cool and windy to enjoy that. This was a nice location to go see the beautiful Skagit Valley tulips, take a trip up to Concrete and Newhalem, spend time in Mt. Vernon and Everett (where we used to live), and meet up with friends during our stay. If we need a place to stay in the area again, we would certainly look at booking this one again. Thanks Ruth and Rich for a pleasant stay! Gayle & Alan (FullTimeRVers)

A beautiful and serene spot

  • 5 of 5

4 girlfriends went for a weekend away, to spend some quality time together and take in the Tulip festival. The tulips were spectacular and we recommend visiting the Rozengaarde. This VRBO was a great spot for us, very central to everything whether going south to the Premium Outlets for shopping, the Tulip festival activities, or a drive to La Conner for lunch and to browse the shops. Some fun antiquing in Conway and La Conner as well. The guest house offers quiet & serene surroundings, a lovely garden with many swallows, hummingbirds and the occasional evening bat. Beautiful views, a relaxing hot tub and good amenities for our stay. It is located in a quiet residential area and is not rural but surrounded by rural areas and views of the valley and the farmlands. We enjoyed a late lunch in La Conner - Fish and Chips - at Pier 7 (recommended!) we had the Beer battered Haddock and Chips w/coleslaw out on the deck on a lovely sunny day; and had a great meal as well in Edison after visiting the Breadfarm for organic breads and pastries, at a place called Tweets that was a casual cafe atmosphere but also had some fantastic local organic farm to table style food. We enjoyed the Lamb burger, made with the local lamb and spiced to perfection complemented with pickled onion and a tomatoe relish serviced with fresh organic greens and garlic seasoned sliced/roasted potatoe. A short drive northwest from this VRBO. Ruth was a lovely host, and made us feel very welcome but was not intrusive at all but ensured we knew she was available for any need we might have. 5 stars :)!

We had such a nice time unwinding at this sweet little guest house. All the attention to detail really made it so we could decompress and relax. We are looking forward to coming back again in the summertime to witness a beautiful sunset from the jacuzzi! Thanks, Ruth!
