Lake Front Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Other (See Description), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)
This great cottage is a quiet escape from the hectic everyday world. It has all of what's needed for fresh air and relaxation, but few of the electronic distractions. In the summer, you can hear nesting loons, and enjoy the good company you've traveled with. The cottage has one separate bedroom with a double bed, and an alcove trundle bed that turns into two twins. This Thayer Lake beachfront cottage shares 150 foot of prime frontage with its sister cottage, 'Pine' (VRBO listing 467656). The cottage sits 400 feet back off the road. Thayer Lake is a no-wake lake perfect for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and relaxed enjoyment of nature. There are both sunny and shady areas along the waterfront and a lakeside fire pit for making S'mores. The lake access is shallow and gradual, good for children and wading. Within one mile of the cottage are two public accesses to Torch Lake, one of Michigan's largest and certainly most beautiful sandy-bottomed lakes.

Lovely, clean, quiet!
A perfect size cabin for a couple, or small family - Late September surprised Michigan with a heat wave. The lake was lovely for swimming with dock and raft. Kayaks, canoe & rowboats if you want to see the lake and stay dry. Screened porch for morning coffee or evening star gazing. Close to everything, far from the crowds. :)
My husband and I enjoyed every night at Thayer Lake Cottages. We will definitely be back. The sounds from the wildlife around us at night were amazing and your super lucky if you get to enjoy an amazing lightening storm on the screened in Porch. Torch Lake is our spot at the dockside right down the road. Lake Michigan was awesome too, big waves, great water temperature too!!! Such an awesome experience. CANNOT WAIT TO GO BACK!!!

Great time on the lake
Cozy, peaceful lakeside retreat.
My teenage daughter and I enjoyed a get away at this cozy cottage on a peaceful no wake lake. We hiked near and explored the charming town of Charlevoix. We also went horseback riding & dining in nearby Bell Aire. It was always nice to come back to the peaceful & relaxing atmosphere of Thayer Lake. We kayaked on Thayer Lake several times. We also enjoyed bird watching including the Loons.
It sounds like you guys took full advantage of what this area and our cottage has to offer! I'm so glad. This time of year is prime Loon nesting season and a really special time to be on Thayer Lake. We have several families that come back each year because of the quiet evening respite this place offers in contrast to the daily excitement of summer activities. Come back anytime!
The most relaxing vacation place ever!
My husband and I just got back from another 2 weeks at Thayer (this was our 3rd year). Yes, 2 weeks. Our first year here, 10 days just wasn't enough...and honestly, 2 weeks isn't either. We are already thinking of coming back in the fall. This is our third year vacationing here. We love the quiet of the no wake lake, fishing is excellent (mostly bass and pan fish but almost guaranteed to catch a couple - even from the dock - every time you go out), close to things to do (this year we went zip lining in Boyne, last year Sleeping Bear Dunes), cute towns close by (Alden, Bellaire and Traverse City), there is also a Casino.... OR the best part is, you can just sit and gaze at the beauty of the lake, watch the wild life (the loons are really cool - we saw a bald eagle and osprey). If you really need some excitement Torch Lake is right next door.... The cabins are great - newly renovated - the screened in porch on the Oak is the best - brings back childhood memories of family vacations (when we went so distracted by tv, phones/texting and internet)... This is the place to unplug. Also note that the cabins have an natural climate control. They tend to stay cool in the heat and warm when cooler (though be sure to prepare for both extremes at any time of year - there is a small heater and fan but northern Michigan weather can be fickle... this year the coolest at night was about 44 - warmest in day about 80) and not to mention - Tim and Stephanie - they are great...Sum it up: The worse part about this entire experience - leaving.
Up North at Thayer Lake
This was our first visit to the Torch Lake area and our stay at the Thayer Lake Cottages could not have been more pleasant. It was every bit as lovely and more so than the listing photos portray. The cottage was clean and comfortable and appropriately appointed. Most of our meals we ate while sitting in the screened porch. We grilled many of our meals and enjoyed our evenings next to the lake around the campfire. We arrived anticipating spending the majority of our time boating on Torch Lake. There was a very nice public access ramp 1-1/2 mile from the cottage on Clam Lake that goes into Torch Lake. But, after seeing another visitor catch a fish on his first cast, my husband was very keen to go fishing. He would tell you that the excellent fishing on Thayer Lake was the biggest surprise and one of the highlights of his week. Butch's Bait & Tackle at Clam River is about a mile from the cottage where fishing gear and licenses are available. The Dockside, also at Clam River was a great place to enjoy lunch sitting on the deck looking out across Torch Lake. We had an excellent Sunday brunch at the Alden Bar & Grille with made to order omelets and shrimp & mussel pasta alfredo, mmm. We enjoyed using the provided kayaks, canoe and floatation devices on Thayer Lake. The fishing was easily done from both kayak and canoe. We completely enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to anyone. It is not a 4-star hotel, however, it's rustic charm is exactly what we were looking for and found...
Up north near-by activities include nature trails, Torch Lake access less than one mile, fun shopping in town of Alden, Short's Brewery and Shanty Creek Golf in Bellaire. Thayer Lake is a 25-minute drive to Turtle Creek Casino. Traverse City, Charlevoix, Petoskey, and Elk Rapids are within 1 hour drive.
