Kailua: meaning “two waters,” was named for the two major lagoons, the Kawainui Lagoon and the Kaelepulu Lagoon, fed by freshwater tributaries off of the Koolau Mountains.
Water is the essence of Kailua. Kailua’s beaches (Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach) have always ranked among the most beautiful and tranquil in the world. This community remains one of the most desirable residential neighborhoods in Hawai’i.
Kailua is becoming a haven for local artists and the rejuvenation of the Hawaiian culture including several famous hula halau (dance troops).
Kailua Town is known for the wide variety of water sport and beach activities it offers, from large family picnics, to windsurfing or kayaking. Kailua is a place to enjoy the beach, and stay for the art galleries, specialty stores and collection of unique eateries that make it Windward Oahu’s destination for fun, sun and the arts.
It is home to a diverse population of approximately 50,000 in the central urban core with surrounding residential areas and is home to approximately 1,500 thriving small businesses. It’s a unique Hawaiian beach town with its beautiful protected beaches – picturesque and uncrowded – that is separated by the Oahu’s metropolitan Honolulu hub by an excellent and improved highway system.
Kailua is truly a natural beauty with its beaches, bays, mountains and wetlands.

My wife & I are love to travel the world but call Hawaii home. We've often stayed in vacation rentals when we travel and find the experience wonderful and exhilarating and a great way to experience a new city, new people and new culture! We have been vacation renting our properties on Oahu and Florida for almost a decade and our aim is to provide our guests the comforts of home and share with them a little piece of our life in Hawaii.
Why Thomas chose Pōhākupu
Kailua is a vibrant, ever-changing town filled with new and old. The home is centrally located to take advantage of all that Kailua has to offer.

Great little house that was clean and as advertised.
- great location, close to grocery stores, farmers market and easy drive to beach
- fenced backyard good for kids
- easy on-site parking
- owners were responsive and easy to communicate with
- no AC, which made afternoon naps for the kids a bit sweltering, although evenings were perfectly fine and cool
- noise from street was sometimes a bit loud, but not terrible
- bathroom was a bit dated/dirty, in particular the shower curtain was covered in mold
Overall a nice site, well-priced, and in a wonderful location.
Beautifully renovated home in Kailua
Lovely 2 bedroom home in Kailua. The place was in immaculate condition and just a few blocks from numerous restaurants, grocery stores etc. Includes parking along with a full size washer and dryer. The backyard was very cute and has a gas grill for your use as well. I would highly recommend staying here for a small family of 4. The kitchen is amazing also and has everything you need to prepare all meals.
Great place for the price.
Spent a month here working and playing. The house was clean and well cared for. A few more plates and cups would be nice as it looks like the number has declined over time due to breakage. The plethora of restaurants and grocery stores within walking distance was great. Would definitely rent again.
Thanks so much! You were such a pleasure to have as a guest. We hope you were able to get to do all the things you wanted to do and maybe even tried the restaurants we recommended. We look forward to having you as a guest again!
Awesome little cottage in great location with all of the comforts of home.
Cute cottage near all amenities and beach
We stayed here for almost 2 weeks. The cottage was very clean when we arrived. It was a very good size for my husband and 2 young daughters. The furniture was also in good condition and very cute/beachy. The washer and driver came in very handy for us as well. We loved the fact that the beach was only probably like 8 min drive away. And Whole Foods, Foodland, Target are all within 5 min. There are also some cute restaurants in the area.
The only minor negatives I'd have is that it is in a residential area so at times there were some neighbors driving by who'd be playing their music super loud or who'd be talking loudly until the early morning hours. The carpet in the bedrooms could also be updated.
But other than that, it's a good place to stay while in Kailua. Good size, nice kitchen and clean.
We had a wonderful time staying here. We were walking distance to many great little shops and restaurants. A short drive to the beach. Staying in a neighborhood made us feel like locals!
There are so many shops and restaurants (enjoyed by the locals, not just tourist joints) right outside your doorstep. Walk, bike or drive!
