May The Renter Beware

What a DUMP. Exposed wiring, no CO or smoke detectors, one shower that barely works, master shower with only half a door, kitchen in complete disarray, closets stuffed with owners possesions, carpets musty, filthy and at least 25 years old, a fireplace that does not work, an owner who does not care and will not hesitate to show up at any hour of the day, sliding doors that barely work, no window coverings or screens, many windows that don't work at all...The list goes on and on. STAY AWAY IS ALL I CAN SAY.

Owner's Response: Jim and Gloria F. rented my townhouse condo from March 1 they April 2 with Check Out Time 11AM. Upon arrival they appeared to have issues as not being lucid. I spoke to them on the phone that month communicating was difficult. Later that month they called me to tell me they wanted to stay longer and check out on April 15. I agreed, and then they told me they had no money and wanted to pay later after continued stay. Easy, I said "NO" Otherwise check out time is as on VRBO CONTRACT. I was THREATENED by Text as I would not agree to let them stay without paying. At this point I requested Police to escort me to the condo. If home owners on vacation websites read this they may not know that i.e.. VRBO is a business operated like a HOTEL OR MOTEL . IT IS NOT LIKE RENTING A HOME AS A RESIDENCE WHERE IF LANDLORD TRYS TO EVICT YOU SOMETIMES IT WILL TAKE COURT AND UP TO 6 MONTHES TO COMPLETE EVICTION. If I had not rented this through VRBO, they would end up being squatters. 2 Police Officers and well over an hour to REMOVE them from my home or go to jail. Yes my carpet is FILTHY, it will take at least 3 cleanings. My kitchen sink has stains that I may have to buy a new sink. The key to property of garage and outside gates is bent in half. I just recently in 3 mo. just bought. Front door no key returned. My sofa is filthy, and hopefully can clean. Due to contract with VRBO this is all I am allowed to disclose. AT THE END OF THE DAY, I AM HAPPY TO BE WITH VRBO OR I WOULD STILL HAVE THEM HERE WITH NO RENT, AND A VERY TRASHED HOME. WITH THE HELP OF VRBO CONTRACT AND 2 POLICE OFFICERS. IT IS BAD HERE BUT WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE. Thank You, J. Gail

Bad dream

We rented this condo at the last minute. We called the owner on the 23rd and she said the place was available for the 25th. We arrived from New York at midnight to the place. It was 3 am our time and we were travelling with a 6 and a 10 year old. We were shocked when we arrived. Their were boxes and junk all over one of the beds. Their were boxes on the patio. The doors were all open and it was freezing. We had to get the kids to bed as they were exhausted. The owner clearly had another hour of moving to do. It was like she was moving out of the place for us. The place was dusty, musty and it clearly needed renovations that should have been done years ago. It definitely did not seem like a vacation rental property but rather someone's personal residence that occasionally got rented. I don't know if the last straw was the owner not being able to find the keys to give us at 1 in the morning or my wife's allergies kicking in from the dust. We had to leave that night prolonging the nightmare mainly for our exhausted kids. The condo is in a lovely location and the owner seems like a nice lady but she clearly doesn't have a clue about vacation rentals or if she does she needs to clean this place up.

Owner's Response: I feel very badly that the property was not ready for you when you arrived, even with you booking at the last minute. I hope you found another property suitable, and enjoyable for you. I did personally dust, washed sheets, etc. The doors were open because I was taking out the boxes of products to my van, along with personal items. This task would not take an hour. I have not had any renters complain about must. I cannot smell it either. I have a guest in there for 2 months and he hasn't mentioned odors to me. I will ask him. Yes I do stay in my home. It doesn't make sense for me to stay in a hotel when I come to Solana Beach and it is not rented. There are pictures on VRBO of my furniture. There are no personal effects such as pictures, books, etc. Again, I am so sorry for the inconvenience but I don't believe $225 a night for a large 2 bedroom 2.5 bath with a great ocean view was out of line. Thank you

The pictures don't do justice to this beautiful condo with a spectacular deck. Gail is awesome to work with and she's a great host. A tremendous value for a romantic getaway or family beach trip.

Unless you are going to a great upscale restaurant such as Jakes, L'Auberge, Tractons, ocean front restaurants in Cardiff by the Sea, Claires on Cedros, Bully's Del Mar, Georges at the Cove, Manhattan (Sol Price now Costco always ate there), La Valencia. The best is to get food to go such as Fidel's, Roberto's, Whole Foods, Double Happiness (chinese) makes more sense to order to go. No wait, no tip, no expensive tasteless cocktails and enjoy your private ocean view.
