About the property

2 Bedroom 1 bath Sleeps 4

Whaleback Retreat is a romantic getaway for 2 couples or maybe just for you! -on North Lake Leelanau just south of Leland village. This spacious apartment overlooking the lake from Whaleback Hill has 200 feet of lakeshore across the street!

Everything you need for a perfect opportunity to be together has been given careful thought by the owners who enjoy 'couples vacations' themselves! (No sharing of outdoor space with other guests!!!)

The master bedroom is a getaway in itself with it's comfy king-sized bed, peaceful woodsy views and roomy walk-in shower. The 2nd bedroom has a queen size bed. Beautiful views of the lake are enjoyed from the open living/full kitchen area. And, we apologize, but lake gazing is required when savoring morning coffee on the balcony or grilling on the patio. Of course, it's then up to you if you head down the hillside stairs, across the street and jump in to the lake!

Whether you are up to relaxing, wine tasting on Michigan’s largest wine trail, hiking Sleeping Bear Dunes, down hill skiing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing or snowmobiling on many of the great trails, boating Lake Leelanau or Lake Michigan, ice fishing, sporting, staring at the water or blazing a mountain bike trail in the summer, Whaleback Retreat has it all!

This retreat is a year around getaway that will always make you feel at home.

Have friends or family you would like to be with, but want your private time too? Please contact us for details about Whaleback Retreat main house, listing VRBO #508805. It is a 3 bedroom 2 bath house that can be opened up to the apartment, or keep it locked for privacy. You can be as sociable & accessible as you care to! Both rentals have separate parking, entrances, private outdoor spaces, fire pits & docks.

About Rebecca

We fell in love with the Leland area and knew that we wanted to share our interest in the area with others. We enjoy kayaking, hiking, skiing, fishing and relaxing by the fire.

Rebecca purchased this apartment in 2013

Wonderful stay in Leelanua Peninsula

  • 5 of 5

We have always loved Lake Leelanau and the surrounding area. The apartment is comfortable and well maintained. A small balcony and a nice lawn provide a great view of the lake, and a deck near the water is shaded in the afternoon and very comfortable. There was plenty of water depth at the dock for our 19 foot Four Winns boat and room on the deck for our two kayaks at night.

Access to Leland and Lake Leelanau is quick and easy by car or boat and especially Leland is an easy trip by kayak.

I will offer two cautions to this otherwise 100% positive review: Access to the water involves crossing M-22 and the 55 MPH traffic would be a serious concern for families with young children. Far less significant, if we had planned on doing much cooking (we didn't) the kitchen would have been somewhat limiting for regularly cooking full-meals for a family.

We highly recommend this accommodation and certainly would use it again for a party of four or fewer.

Wonderful Weekend For the Wine Festival

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed 3 fabulous nights with our friends visiting Leland, renting just the upper 2 bedroom apartment. The apartment was VERY clean and well equipped. Loved the high ceilings and beautiful view of Lake Leelenau. It's located just a couple minutes from hiking trails, and just a couple minutes to Leland by car. We did walk to town one morning, although the road is quite busy. The layout is a little awkward for 2 couples, as you enter the master bedroom through the only bathroom. We made it work!!

Comfortable and spacious apartment close to Leland

  • 4 of 5

The apartment is about 1.5 miles from "downtown" Leland. It's a simple and easy drive into town. The apartment has a great view of Lake Leelanau and is spacious and very nicely furnished. The kitchen is large and fully furnished. Since we were there in the winter, the gas fireplace was really a great bonus! Though we didn't use them, the apartment had a washer and dryer, which would be good for a larger family. It also was very quiet - even with a group of people staying in the other part of the house. The apartment was very clean when we arrived, and it is obvious that it has been well taken care of. Overall it is a very nice place to stay with a lot to offer no matter what season of the year one might be in Leland.

beautiful location, cute apartment.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the apartment during peak color, and what a gorgeous view to have in the morning! Within walking distance of a trail system, and a couple miles from downtown Leland. Great location for wineries, shopping and restaurants.

Very clean and modern with high quality furnishings and super comfy beds, and in a great location.

  • 5 of 5

Rebecca was very responsive and helpful. The apartment is large and tastefully finished with great furnishings and excellent beds. Nice touches: high quality towels and West Elm bedding. Yes, my wife noticed and mentioned these things specifically!

Thanks for a great stay!
