About Shell Ostler

My husband and I met on a annual friends trip to Yosemite, dated for a year and on the following annual trip he proposed to me at North Dome. We were married a year later in Mariposa, where we moved to to start our life and family together. We've been in Mariposa for a few years now and love living here and sharing our wonderful property with our guests.

Shell Ostler purchased this house in 2010

What makes this house unique

Our black lab, Dino, keep the bears away but you may see many of the other wild animals we have wondering the property at times, deer, fox, coyote, wild turkey and others.

Guestbook comments from the owner

wonderful rental for families with kids

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 3 nights and the house was a great fit for us and our young kids. I had stomach flu as we were arriving and needed to get into the rental a few hours before check-in time and the owners were kind and let us right in. The dog is friendly and my kids loved playing with it every morning. My boys also utilized the fleet of trikes, scooters, cars, etc. to play like crazy and because the house is out in the country, it felt safe and secluded enough to let them play without any fear of traffic (the house is up a long driveway). I will say that we had some pause when we first pulled up because there is a variety of things outdoors that make the yard perimeter look less tidy. BUT, the inside of the house was beautiful, clean, and extra-amazing in the kitchen. Every possible cooking thing you could want or need and just a really spacious and beautiful kitchen. The bathrooms were also very pretty and immaculately cleaned. Plus there is an entire play room with tons of games and toys for kids. Not once did they ask to watch TV because there were so many great things to play with. We did drive into Yosemite every day and it took 1-2 hours each way depending on which part of the park we were visiting. Wish it were closer, but for the size, the price, and the great stuff for kids, I think it was still worth the drive. Also, my bed was SO COMFORTABLE and very beautifully furnished. Way way better than a hotel. So very sweet a time we had. Thank you!

Got this cabin for all our kids while we stayed at another one. Definitely did much better for the kids!!! Big enough for the four of them and two grandkids. Modern with all the amenities, plus stuff for the grand babies!!! Shell was wonderful and went well above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable!!! Highly recommended!!!!

Kept the kids entertained!

  • 5 of 5

The property was very very clean, it had everything we needed and everything was very new and functional. The beddings were clean and comfortable. There were a lot of toys and board games to keep kids entertained. Downside is that the play structure is not that big, and there was spider webs all over, and some of the out door toys were not functional. One suggestion is to have a step stool available in the bathroom, so the little kids can reach the sink. Owner is very friendly and responsive, and provided many tips for our trip.

Beautiful quiet house

  • 5 of 5

We visited Yosemite, which was about an hour away.

The town of Mariposa is charming and there are a lot of dining options there as well as supermarket and farmers market.

Everything you need

  • 4 of 5

This was a great place to stay. It had everything that you need. My 2 children loved the trampoline, the gill worked great ( you didn't have to use a match to light it). The beds were very comfortable. And we were greeted by the hostess family pet each time we came back to the cabin, which was a very friendly black lab, in which our family loves dogs. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of the peacocks, next door, would wake you up early in the morning, but he owner of this home has no control over this.

We are located almost half way between the South entrance and the West entrance. The West entrance is Hwy 140 through the town of Mariposa and takes approximately 45 minutes to get to the entrance. This is the quickest way to get to the valley floor. The South entrance is Hwy 41 through the town of Oakhurst and it takes approximately 1 hour to get to the entrance. This is the entrance I would recommend if you are going to the Mariposa Grove or to the Wawona area. Just beyond Oakhurst is the beautiful resort area of Bass Lake. With such places so close, all kinds of activities are yours for the choosing: fishing, water sports, snow sports, hiking, biking, golfing, rafting, historical tours, gold panning, rock climbing, zip lining, horseback riding, birding, and so much more.
