About the property

Big Family? This is your place!

4 bedroom home in Laie Hawaii. If you have a big group or lots of kids this would be your chance to see Hawaii and experience the beauty of the North Shore.

We just installed two A/Cs. One in the master a big one in the living room.

We have 2 twin beds in 3 of the bedrooms. One has the ladder bolted to it and kinda has to stay like a bunk, but the other two can be either bunks or side by side that will sleep 6. The master has a queen bed for a couple. Then in the living room we have two brand new sofa sleepers. You could throw a couple of kids on each one or one adult (it's like a full size bed).

Full kitchen, Washer and Dryer, Driveway, Wireless internet, Boogie Boards, Beach toys.

We just finished painting the whole dang house. What a job, but it looks super nice.

The house is behind our new house. It is located right next to Laie Park. Walking distance to Hukilau Beach and many great hiking trails.

Near Polynesian Cultural Center, Turtle Bay Resort, Laie Hawaii LDS Temple and BYU Hawaii.

About Martha

I'm a mom with six kids and we are renting out our first home. I love sports and living in Hawaii is just incredible. My husband and I both work at BYU Hawaii and our older kids go to college here. The other kids go to Kahuku HS.

Martha purchased this house in 2010

Why Martha chose Laie

We bought this house 3 1/2 years ago. It was a real fixer upper, but we did it. We put in new floors, bathrooms, kitchen and some new walls. We painted and landscaped and got it looking pretty good.

What makes this house unique

The benefit of this house would be 4 separate bedrooms. If you have a large group you could save a bunch of money. We just finished painting every single room and cleaned it up nice.

It's right on a little park. Hukilau Beach is 900 yards away and great hiking the other direction in the mountains.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Everything was exactly as described: the house is cool, close to the beach and in a very cozy place. We felt at home. We could move around to the places we wanted to go, without traffic jam. I totally recommend the house. And Martha was kind and concerned about our arriving. She gave us all the information to get there and contacted us to know if everything was fine. Comfortable, plenty of towels, for bath and beach, quiet place.

Good place for a large group on the north shore

  • 4 of 5

Owner was excellent to work with. Good beds and the place is well cared for. Visitors of the other apartment kept parking in our spots, but that was the only real negative.

It was great!! Really nice for the price

  • 5 of 5

It was perfect for our family! It was nice to be close to the beaches. It was nice to be able to do laundry and prepare food here. We had no problems . For the price and the accommodations it was excellent! Wish we could stay longer.

The home was sufficient for our needs. We got what we paid for, nothing more.

  • 3 of 5

We feel that it is important to be truthful when providing a review so that others know what to expect.

The Good: We loved having a place to go and rest our heads. The space was sufficient for our group of 10. It was nice to have some beach toys provided for us and it was nice that there was a washer and dryer provided. It was nice to have a kitchen to off-set the prices of food.

Now with that being said,

We found the owner was not as friendly as we expected. We felt that we were quite an inconvenience to her when we told her that there were bugs in the bathroom-to which she said to us: 'this is Hawaii-there are bugs here'. (It was a steady steam of them not just a few) Also, we asked for trash bags because we only had 2 and it seemed like we were asking too much.

We found that some of the kitchen appliances were not in working condition (the rice cooker the stove and toaster) but felt that we wouldn't want to 'bother' her by letting her know. We found that there was a ton of ants in the shaggy carpet on the living room-by the tons of bites on my 9 year olds legs. (Yes, we expect a few bugs...but this was a lot)

It was really warm!! Even with the 2 room air conditioners and a fan in each room, it was warm. (Yes, I know it is Hawaii and it's hot.) We bought our own paper towels, toilet paper, dish soap, hand soap, scrubbing sponges/towels and more trash bags. (With all the bugs we made sure we took it out daily.)

No big deal, but the house you rent is shared so the washer/dryer is shared. You may have to wait/bother the other tenant when doing laundry. We were asked several times to move our cars from the driveway so that other tenants could leave, when we thought that it wasn't a problem to park in the driveway.

Laie is a nice little town and if you are planning on staying on that side of the island it's a great place to stay. Now if you're planning to do all of the touristy things throughout the'll be driving...ALOT, and it takes a while to get them.

We really enjoyed our stay, it would have been wonderful if we would have felt like we were more welcome to be there.

Owner's Response: I have to write a little in defense. Right when the guests arrived they immediately started looking for problems. They told me there were bugs in the bathroom. So I grabbed some bug spray, and since I couldn't find any they pointed to 3 tiny ants near the ceiling. I proceeded to spray the said 3 ants and then sprayed the whole outside of the house. It is Hawaii and we do have some ants. I did bring them over a papaya off our tree. I believe those are the only times I talked with the family. I'm not sure why they felt I was not friendly. The days Melanie stayed were indeed the hottest days of the summer. Usually Hawaii is quite pleasant. Sorry, that it was so hot. We really can't control the weather. There are fans in the rooms and A/C in the living and master. At .26 a kilowatt for electricity, we can't quite afford A/C in every room. I'm not sure why they bought dish soap or tp as there were plenty in the house and also paper towels in the cupboard. I guess they didn't see it. There were also scrubbers under the kitchen sink and clorox wipes. I would have gladly brought more trash bags, but wasn't asked. The other tenants aren't supposed to park in the driveway. Sorry about that. If I were informed, then that could have been prevented. For a group of 10 people to only pay this price, this house is an incredibly great deal. Hotel rooms in the area go for twice as much as we charge and they would have needed 3 or 4 rooms. Also to give us a bad rating about driving a lot on the island. Well, that's just not right.

2 single moms with their kids

  • 4 of 5

This location is fantastic! Close to the best beach on North Shore, Hukilau Cafe, LDS Temple, churches, and PCC. Our host Martha was very accommodating with local information, beach toys, even letting us borrow a cooler for our picnic. Apartment was big enough to accommodate two single moms and their 5 kids where everyone got their own bed. Showers were small, but nice, and lots of hot water. Kitchen and living space are big enough to accommodate family gatherings at night. On the downside we were a bit disappointed to have to share a laundry with college boys who were in an attached apartment on the other side of laundry room. We didn't want to be their mother too as they would leave their laundry in the machines for days at a time. The shared apartment also led to awkward parking. Despite these couple of setbacks we loved our time in Laie. The price for this apartment was exceptional as we were able to spend a longer time on the island and do other activities because it was affordable. It met our needs.

Nice for multi-generational family for a few days

  • 4 of 5

As described, clean, nearby owner gave great local tips. This modest dwelling was located well out of Honolulu, near by beaches, Polynesian Cultural Center, a short Drive to Dole Plantation. An easy day trip to tour Pearl Harbor area and return to tranquility. Enjoyed touring a nearby ranch and taking catamaran ride. Quite adequate for our family of 10, ages 2-72.

Perfect for families

  • 4 of 5

We had a fantastic time on our vacation and this house was a great rental for our family. Wetook five of our teenagers and we fit perfectly in this house. It was a great location, within walking distance of one of our favorite beaches: Hukilau. It was close to several of the attractions we chose to do and not a bad driving distance to all the other things. It had everything we needed to be comfortable and enjoy our stay in the beautiful state of Hawaii.
