About the Property
Brand New 2 Bed, 1 Bath House Overlooking the bay. Walk to beach, hot tub...
The views from this newly-renovated little gem of a house, nestled sixty feet up on a cliff overhanging beautiful Bodega Bay, are arguably among the most fabulous in all of Marin and Sonoma Counties. From its many large (and several fun diamond-shaped) windows, its multi-level decks and hot tub, High Over the Bay surveys the town and rolling hills off to the left. The bay’s active marinas peek out from the right, and, front and center, a vast view of the bay stretches all the way to Doran Beach and the sea. On the beach at the head of the bay below the house, water fowl, birds and birdwatchers abound. All you need is binoculars to closely survey the comings and goings of birds and boats, from the comfort of the living room couch.
Lovingly restored by the Norwegian architect owner and a gifted local cabinet maker, this distinctively configured, centrally located house, is adjacent to a huge, nearly deserted beach, part of the extensive Sonoma Coast State Park system of beaches. High Over the Bay is newly roofed and shingled on the outside. All new, too, are the whitewashed cedar-paneled walls and handsome high sloped ceilings and beams. The many rich woods are perfectly complemented throughout by dark, variegated Italian tile floors, which are heated on the bedroom level.
The striking contemporary furniture was selected by the owners, one piece at a time, to create a warm, eclectic and casually sophisticated look. Wicker, bamboo, colorful rugs, shell mirrors and other small touches add to the light, airy feel. The large outdoor hot tub overlooks tall grasses, an often dappled sky and, of course, the bay, hills, and head of the bay lying right below. It’s a wonderland of harbor lights at night. Bright beach towels and an oversized shower with pebble flooring are waiting inside the deck door for you. It doesn’t get much better than this!
The owners, who will spend their winters here, are leaving the house for you much as they would leave it for themselves. Both bedrooms have cushy Queen size beds furnished with high-end striking Hotel brand linens. There are plenty of pillows and thick Hotel brand towels of all sizes as well. The closets and new Crate and Barrel chests of drawers are equally commodious.
The stunning open-plan living space is outfitted with a 40-inch Smart TV, which can be tucked away or rolled out to enjoy from a super-cozy sectional couch and occasional chairs. The dining area, with its wraparound view, features a Crate and Barrel Parson’s glass-topped table, seating six in comfortable blue leather chairs. The adjacent kitchen is appointed with brushed stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, handcrafted sunflower-yellow cabinets and a full array of Calphalon cookware and utensils. Henckels knives, spices, oils and other staples are on hand to help you prepare and serve full meals. Outside, there’s a charcoal grill and original wooden eating area tucked under old Cypress trees sporting views of the bay below and hills beyond.
If you’d rather not cook, it’s a seven minute walk down the hill and over to the marinas and famous Spud Point Crab Company, whose clam chowder was voted “Best in Bodega Bay” again this year. Their crab sandwiches and whole crabs (which they’ll cook and clean for you to take home) are delicious, too. In the other direction from the house—almost as close but with a very different feel—is lovely Terrapin Creek. An intimate family-owned-and-operated neighborhood restaurant, its fresh, imaginative cuisine has earned it a coveted Michelin star. Other mouth-watering meals, many featuring locally sourced fish and meats, are a short drive away.
This is one of the few rental properties along the Sonoma Coast from which you can easily walk to Bodega Head (2.2 miles from the house). The Head is one of the great vantage points for observing the epic migration of whales from the Chukchi Sea near Alaska down to Baja California for the winter. Although the migration peaks from January through May, gray and blue whales may be visible much of the year from the Head’s Ocean Overlook and trails.
THE MARINE LAB, BEACH & MORE
If you can arrange to be here Friday afternoon, consider stopping in between 2 and 4 pm for a tour at the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory. The lively, informal walk-about features numerous marine aquarium displays containing colorful local fishes and invertebrates, a small kelp forest, anemones and other underwater residents of Bodega’s near-shore sub-tidal habitat. The lab lies halfway between the house and the Head, an easy walk or short drive, as you like.
But right up there with the house’s central location and spectacular views, the most outstanding aspect of your stay at High Over the Bay is bound to be the beach you find at the end of a ten minute walk. The path, which is just up the road and over the hill behind the house, wends its way through scenic deserted dunes to a wide and wild white sand beach stretching for miles in both directions. You are as likely to see horses as you are people, and there’s plenty of driftwood to lure you to sit down, lean back and daydream as you watch the waves roll in—and, if you are lucky, spot a whale or two. This treasure of a beach is so out of the way that the owners only recently discovered it and decided they must have died and gone to heaven.
If beaches aren’t your thing, other local attractions include golfing (a ten minute drive south on Highway 1); kayaking (right below the house if you bring your own); hiking and biking (anywhere you want to go); surfing (on nearby Doran beach, or an equally short distance up the coast toward Jenner); sport fishing (out of the marinas you see from the house), and horseback riding on the beach (starting out from within a short walk of the house).
Russian River wineries, the best within a half hour’s drive, have become serious business. Closer to home there are the marinas to wander, and restaurants, wine bars, galleries and quaint local gift, candy and kite shops where you can snack, drink and browse the day away. For oh, so many reasons, we think you’ll love High Over the Bay and its serene surroundings every bit as much as the owners did the day they happened up Whaleship Road and knew they had to buy this house.
