We bought this home years ago to enjoy the north woods of Wisconsin for the beautiful sunsets, swims to the island, skiing and hiking in winter and the gorgeous fall colors. We raised our three daughters here to enjoy the same love of the wilderness and they have canoed and kayaked from Boulder Junction to the Arctic circle and many places in between! And become avid ski racers, snow-shoers and tele-skiers as well. They cherish their memories but now live in the West and we want to share this little slice of peace of mind with others!
Diane O'Connor purchased this house in 1981
I went to camp in nearby Mercer and fell in love with the smells of the forests and the peace of the starry nights. When the opportunity came to buy this home we jumped at it and now have many friends whose families have enjoyed it with us.
Fabulous sunsets, autumn colors that surpass New England, never-ending trails to explore the wilderness, and events that don't end in Manitowish Waters, Presque Isle, Boulder Junction, and Mercer.
We spent a week here for a family getaway. The week was spent boating, fishing, hiking, visiting the local bars and restaurants, and just relaxing while enjoying each others company. This home is large, comfortable, well maintained, and situated directly on a very quiet lake. We were a group of 7 adults and could have easily accommodated more. The house had everything needed for a great stay. The property is beautiful and very private.
The Winchester area is something of a step back in time. If you are looking for crowds, fast food, and Walmarts, this is probably not the place for you. If you want a relaxing, laid back experience, that still has alot of great activities, this is the place.
This is our second time staying at Sach's North. If you "get" the Northwoods experience, I think you'll absolutely fall in love with this place. During our recent stay we watched fledgling eagles learn to fly over the course of two weeks. Incredible. The back deck and fire pit are just perfect for relaxing anytime of day. The front deck is great too and will shield you on colder, windy days. The fire pit is right by the water and is just perfect for morning coffee or evening cocktails. The sunsets will take your breath away. I've never seen such beautiful ones! The dock is a decent size, and there is room to park your own boat. At the end of July the surface temperature of the water approached 80 degrees for us, so being in the water was very comfortable. It's a rocky/sandy bottom around the dock with no weeds, which makes it nice for swimming. The home is spacious and has lots of nice amenities. The bar and game/TV room downstairs is a great plus--a wonderful place for reclaiming old-fashioned family fun. The master bedroom has a whirlpool bath and a large window overlooking the lake. I've never slept so good. The lake is quiet but ideal for all the usual activities. If you can transport kayaks/canoes, paddling from the nearby park in Winchester to Cedar Lake is amazing. Manitowish Waters has everything you need in the way of groceries, rentals, etc. Mercer has great shops, including the Wampum Shop (lots of gifts--big and small), and Antiques and Stuff around the corner is really cool. We got some old snow shoes and other stuff there to decorate our own log home with at great prices. All the items have great stories behind them. Make time to check out the Skyview for dinner. It's up County W by Presque Isle. There is no better Friday night fish fry in the Northwoods. The sweet and sour walleye is mind blowingly good, and you won't believe the enormous size of the filets. If you like hustle and bustle this isn't the place. If you are looking for maximum relaxation in a rustic yet modernized setting and off-the-beaten-path yet convenient location, this is what you want. The owners are great too. And be sure to take advantage of the "full" cleaning service on your way out. The price is very reasonable, and it allows you to maximize valuable vacation time. We can't wait to return! I've been coming up to the Northwoods since I can remember, and this is my favorite place that we have ever stayed.
I have been going "up north" for 44 years, and this is my favorite place. I have never seen sunsets as beautiful as the ones we saw here. The location of the campfire pit is just perfect. It sits close to the lake, so it is great for both evening and morning campfires. Enjoy it at night with the whole family (there are plenty of places to sit), or grab an early-morning cup of coffee and rekindle the embers from the night before, enjoy the smell of the towering pines, and enjoy a gentle breeze off the lake. I can't recall the last time I was so relaxed. There are two docks with plenty of room to park your boat if you bring one. There is a spacious deck overlooking the lake (facing west), and another one facing east. So, at any time of day you can take in the sun on one of the decks. As I would put it, coffee out front...cocktails out back. It's perfect. The lake is very quiet with not a lot of activity (which is so nice, especially at night), but there is plenty of room on it to do all the activities you enjoy--fishing, tubing, skiing, etc. Inside the home is just great. The master bedroom is wonderful. Open the large windows before you go to bed and fall asleep and wake up listening to the loons and the waves lapping against the shore. The bar/game room downstairs is truly unique. We recalled wonderful old memories and laughed and smiled as we created new ones. There are plenty of good restaurants nearby and lots of things to do. There is a nearby "Discovery Center" in Manitowish Waters with lots of activities (including miles of trails), and paddlers will love South Turtle Lake. The river route from South Turtle to Cedar Lake is fantastic. If you just want to do the river, put it at the town park in nearby Winchester and leave a car at the boat landing at Cedar Lake. The trip takes 3-4 hours (one way) with a few portages around beaver dams and rocky spots, but most of it is calm paddling through remote territory. If you scuba dive, check out nearby Sparkling Lake and also Palette Lake near Boulder Junction. The bottom line is this. If you are looking for a place to completely and totally relax, forget about the daily grind, and reconnect with family in a good old-fashioned rustic way, this is the place for you. I'm not sure if links work in reviews, but here is some video I shot during our two-week stay: https://vimeo.com/134759017. We are literally counting the weeks until we can return!! This place is just magical. There's just something about it.
This was our second year at this property. Both years we have had wonderful experiences. The property is large and has a lot of common areas that are great for bigger groups to congregate. We had a group of 8 and had plenty of sleeping and living space. We enjoyed making family-style dinners and enjoying our morning coffee on the deck overlooking the lake. We had fantastic weather and had great views of the summer solstice sunset as well as the stars from the pier. We enjoyed using the fire pit and then gathering in the basement/bar room for cards and movies. The house is well stocked and has all the kitchen appliances you could need. It is also in a great location. Close to Manitowish Waters and Presque Isle as well as a couple lake chains. Overall, we have enjoyed staying at this property the last two years and would recommend it to others.
We stayed 5 nights with 4 adults and 4 kids. The house was perfect for our needs! Plenty of space, bedrooms for all, fully stocked kitchen and beautiful views. We ended up being there on a rainy week so we didn't get much use out of the boat we rented, but I would recommend calling Wilson's if you want to rent a pontoon. Fairly inexpensive with delivery/drop off to the house. The house was nicely located, with easy access to grocery, restaurants and bait shops. The home owners were wonderful to work with and very prompt with reservations and any questions we had. We would definitely rent again if in the area, but we'd likely return in late July or August to have better weather and warmer water : )
We stayed for three days with our extended family and had the time of our lives. Everything one could want is already on the property and so many nice little touches really make you feel like home!
From the nightly bonfires, daily fishing from the pier, excursions on the lake via one of the provided boats (sorry oars only LOL) to the poker games in the excellent gameroom/bar, we had so much to do that we wish we could have stayed longer. The property is well maintained and in excellent condition and while the property did not have air conditioning, it never rose above 80 and at night it was cool so we never missed it.
While we did experience bugs, we knew we were staying in the woods and expected as much. With proper preparation they were not an issue. There is no phone and while some in our party were able to get a cell signal, not all cell providers worked so keep this in mind. We were, however, able to all get a signal in the local town.
Now if you expect a "Dells" type experience look elsewhere. This is a magical, special place that brings back memories of simpler times in which families spent the week interacting with each other, playing board games, fishing, hiking, swimming, camp fires, cooking out, and actually talking to each other face to face >GASP< LOL!
If you are looking for Wax Museums, Tourist shops filled with overpriced "Made in China" garbage, Go carts, or any of the other "Tourist Trap" activities then move along as you will not find these activities in the area. What you will find is pristine forests, clean air, water you can see to the bottom and a property with all the comforts of home.
Sure they have WiFi, Satellite TV, and yes even electricity LOL so you do have all the modern conveniences so don't let my review scare you away. The price, for what you get, is very fair and the only thing I regret was having to return home.
Thanks Dianne for a vacation we will never forget!
