About Nadine Burns

Our children learned to fish, swim, boat and have many adventures over the years on the crystal clear waters Jewell Lake. Many memories were created around the fire pit, telling stories while making s'mores.

Nadine Burns purchased this cabin in 2000

Why Nadine Burns chose Barton City

Barton City is a small rural town, surrounded by the Huron National Forrest and large farms. Even on the drive, you will find that you reach a point we like to call 'above the stress line' where the cares of the world fall away. Our family has a history here from the logging industry and we have always spent summers at the lake, teaching the kids a more natural side of life.

You are within a 15 miles of awesome canoeing, tubing and kayaking on the AuSable River. There are many surrounding golf courses, 4 within a 15 minute drive. Harrisville is only 12 miles away on Lake Huron and their craft, antique and wine festival weekends are always a good time. The county fair in Lincoln boasts fun demolition derbies and many farming events.

The Fourth of July is called 'The Biggest LIttle 4th in the North' due to the parade, festival in the park, and fireworks exhibit on the island you can see right from the front of the cabin.

Labor Day weekend is when Barton City hosts a local Baseball Tourament so it is always a fun and packed weekend around town.

What makes this cabin unique

Being right on the lake, sitting on the swing in the evening was one of our favorite things to do, whether solving world problems or laughing with family.

With so much of Jewel Lake being in the Huron National forest, it is not over populated and it is common to only see 2-3 boats out on the lake in the afternoon, or even none at all.

It is an all motor lake, so you can bring your jet skis, ski boat or kayak and enjoy the water on your own terms.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We were return guests at the cabin on Jewel Lake and found all we needed for a really nice getaway at the lake. We were able to see the parade in the morning from the street along the cabin and the fireworks at night from the swing in front of the cabin on the lake. This property has the perfect location for both.

During the week it is serene and quiet.

The owners provided coffee, some spices and even playing cards for us to use.

It didn't feel like a hotel, but like our own cabin, which is what we were looking for.

We will be back!

A Piece of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

It was a wonderful time. So awesome to just walk out the door and fish. The cabin is very nice and quite roomy. Well stocked with everything you need. What a peaceful setting. Met the host and he was very nice and made sure to tell us if we needed anything to let him know. Thank you so much. My niece can't wait to go back again. Brenda and Rick L

Fantastic vacation. Just pack your bags. Everything you need is there.

  • 5 of 5

This place was awesome. In the morning you can watch the sunrise over the lake, hear the loons calling and see the fish swimming by because the water is so clear. Relaxing with a hot cup of coffee and sitting in a swing within five feet of the lake. Fishing and kayaking was wonderful. If opportunity presents itself, I highly recommend a stay at this adorable cottage. It has everything you need for a vacation. Pack your bags and enjoy.

This vacation on Jewell lake was perfect. The cabin is well equipped with all that is needed to spend quality family time. No internet was replaced by board games, long hikes nearby, cooking in a fabulously stocked kitchen, relaxing moments of the wooden swing overlooking the lake, and canoeing.

Our guests left many surprise treats for us all around the cabin. In a basket on the kitchen table were all the ingredients for making smores. There were multiple lotions and conditioners in the bathroom. There was even a candy jar in the cupboard.

The general store within walking distance up the road had freshly made pizza and hand dipped ice cream.

We are hoping to return to view Fall colors!

Great little place to relax and get away from it all.

  • 4 of 5

This is a very nice little cottage right on a small lake "up north". My family of 4 stayed here for a full week over the 4th of July. Barton city is known for its "biggest little 4th in the North" and it certainly was. This little town has one grocery/gas store and a restaurant, but they put on a great firework show and BBQ in the park. The cottage is small but sufficient. The bunk room literally is that... a small room with bunks. We put our 6'5" son in the queen and me and my hubby traded nights on the couch. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you will need. Great to have a choice of gas or charcoal grills. This property sits right on the water with a nice little yard area by the lake and bigger yard to the side and rear of cottage. The neighbors are close but very nice and don't "invade your space". If you are looking for a nice quiet place to literally get away from it all this place is awesome and great for the price. Pack the majority of your food needs as it's at least a 20 min drive to the nearest real grocery and restaurants are few and far between. We took a drive to Alpena (about 45 min) and found lots of eating options. Our goal was FAMILY TIME and we achieved that. We rented a pontoon nearby and spent the day on the lake, fished everyday off the dock or in the rowboat provided, hiked the island, golfed 2 courses near by, spent a beach day on lake Huron, and played cards with our kids every night. A good time was had by all! Thanks to Ron and Nadine for being great hosts!

Located on Jewel Lake in Barton City, a small town with with a grocery store, gas station, bar, ball diamond, tennis court and post office. The lake is part of the Huron National Forest with boat launch, swimming beach and acres of land to hike in, see wildlife or bird watching. There is a bald eagle on the lake which is loaded with blue gill, perch, walleye, pike, bass and turtles. Lake is very calm during the week, busier but not crazy on weekends with an island oasis to hike on. ATV trails are close by and run through the forest.
