About Nadine Burns

Our children learned to fish, swim, boat and have many adventures over the years on the crystal clear waters Jewell Lake. Many memories were created around the fire pit, telling stories while making s'mores.

Nadine Burns purchased this cabin in 2000

Why Nadine Burns chose Northeast

Barton City is a small rural town, surrounded by the Huron National Forrest and large farms. Even on the drive, you will find that you reach a point we like to call 'above the stress line' where the cares of the world fall away. Our family has a history here from the logging industry and we have always spent summers at the lake, teaching the kids a more natural side of life.

You are within a 15 miles of awesome canoeing, tubing and kayaking on the AuSable River. There are many surrounding golf courses, 4 within a 15 minute drive. Harrisville is only 12 miles away on Lake Huron and their craft, antique and wine festival weekends are always a good time. The county fair in Lincoln boasts fun demolition derbies and many farming events.

The Fourth of July is called 'The Biggest LIttle 4th in the North' due to the parade, festival in the park, and fireworks exhibit on the island you can see right from the front of the cabin.

Labor Day weekend is when Barton City hosts a local Baseball Tourament so it is always a fun and packed weekend around town.

What makes this cabin unique

Being right on the lake, sitting on the swing in the evening was one of our favorite things to do, whether solving world problems or laughing with family.

With so much of Jewel Lake being in the Huron National forest, it is not over populated and it is common to only see 2-3 boats out on the lake in the afternoon, or even none at all.

It is an all motor lake, so you can bring your jet skis, ski boat or kayak and enjoy the water on your own terms.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We were return guests at the cabin on Jewel Lake and found all we needed for a really nice getaway at the lake. We were able to see the parade in the morning from the street along the cabin and the fireworks at night from the swing in front of the cabin on the lake. This property has the perfect location for both.

During the week it is serene and quiet.

The owners provided coffee, some spices and even playing cards for us to use.

It didn't feel like a hotel, but like our own cabin, which is what we were looking for.

We will be back!

Great view and peaceful place to relax

  • 5 of 5

It was a quiet little cabin with a awesome view and a great fire pit. Woke up to a foggy lake and a great sunrise's in the mornings and picture perfect sunsets in the evenings. Had plenty of games to occupy your time if it rains outside. Would love to rent it again next year!!

Peaceful and reasonably priced.

  • 4 of 5

We had an amazing week despite some unseasonably hot weather. The cabin is small but updated and clean. The lake is very clear with very little boat traffic and good fishing.

I recommend this cabin for a family of 4 or a few serious anglers looking for a new walleye spot. Overall, we had a great time and look forward to our next "up north" adventure.

Thanks, Ron

A good place to unwind

  • 2 of 5

We have no complaints with the cottage or the hosts. The cottage was clean and well-stocked. Our host met us shortly after we arrived, and he was very friendly. This is the second year in a row we've been misled by cottage reviews posted on VRBO. The neighbors told us not to swim in the lake because of "swimmers itch". The host told us the fishing in the lake has really dropped off, so we might want to drive 15 miles away to do our fishing. If you are a jet-skier or kayaker, this would be the place for you. It is also a good place if you enjoy reading or just loafing around. We left before our week was up, needless to say, we were both disappointed.

Owner's Response: Linda and Norm, Thank you for the nice comments about the cabin. We try our best to have a small but clean well stocked cabin, and anticipate our renter's needs. I am so sorry you had bad luck fishing. You did bring a very large boat that was set up with 16 pole holders and downriggers for salmon/great lakes fishing. I did note there was a nice boat launch at Harrisville 16 miles away, and you may enjoy fishing the great lakes there, as I always do. Many of our renters ask about local attractions, and we try to offer them up, such as canoeing on the AuSable River as well. Again, we are so sorry you had bad luck fishing. Wishing you good luck on your next fishing trip. Ron

Small but Cute

  • 4 of 5

In my opinion, this is a great cottage for a couple or a family with 2 young children. My wife, 3 adult children and I were a bit cramped at time. However, it had all that was needed to enjoy our stay and my wife claims the kitchen, by far, had more cooking utensils, tools, and supplies than any other cottage we have ever rented. Rowing to the island to hang out and explore was a bonus. Again, it's a little small but cute and functional!

Owner's Response: Mark, Thank you for the kind words. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Thanks so much for leaving the cabin so clean and picked up when you left. We try to continually add improvements, and added a new 32inch TV and DVD player this week. Hope to see you again. Ron and Nadine

Very cute cabin with everything you need right on the lake with a great fire pit.

  • 5 of 5

A little piece of heaven right on the lake! The cabin had everything you need in the kitchen and plenty of linens. A row boat and fishing poles to use... Loved the fire pit for s'mores & hot dogs!! Tons of games to play in the evening & movies to watch. The local area info left by the owners was helpful! It was a very relaxing vacation and a great way to enjoy Northern Michigan!! We will definitely be back & will recommend renting this cabin to our friends & family!!

The property and cabin was neat & clean, and the view of the lake was great.

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time swimming and the fishing was terrific, walleye, bluegill and perch. We also saw an Eagle, and the calls of the loons were like we went back in time to a very peaceful place. We had treats when we first arrived which hit the spot, because of the traveling. The neighbors were very friendly and the gas station/party store was very convenient. But I would recommend bringing a motor for the boat or rent one, unless you are a good oarsman, it can be tricky if the breeze comes up.

I would highly recommend this getaway to relax and enjoy nature. Thank you.

Located on Jewel Lake in Barton City, a small town with with a grocery store, gas station, bar, ball diamond, tennis court and post office. The lake is part of the Huron National Forest with boat launch, swimming beach and acres of land to hike in, see wildlife or bird watching. There is a bald eagle on the lake which is loaded with blue gill, perch, walleye, pike, bass and turtles. Lake is very calm during the week, busier but not crazy on weekends with an island oasis to hike on. ATV trails are close by and run through the forest.
