Overview

About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 Full Bath, On 2 1/2 Acres With Hot Tub, Pool Table, & Dish TV

The Refuge is the Southern-most house on the Eastern Shore, less than five minutes from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The house is over 100 years old and stands on a two and a half acre lot. There is plenty of parking for multiple vehicles as well as boats. There is room near the well house to clean your boat but not your fish or game. The front porch has four rocking chairs where you can sip your coffee and watch the sun rise over the trees across the street or set in the afternoon shade and enjoy the tranquil setting. There is a hot tub that can accommodate four adults on the enclosed porch. Also provided are an umbrella and beach chairs, some beach toys for the kids, fishing rods & crab nets and two adult size bicycles for riding the nearby 6 mile bike trail through part of the refuge. The three bedrooms are tastefully furnished with new mattresses. The house is advertised to sleep 8 counting the two full sofas in the living room but there are two additional full size cots we use for the grand children when everybody comes in. You are welcome to use them if needed. The master bedroom has a wave less water bed with built in flat screen TV for the more adventurous.

Hours of entertainment can be had from playing pool on the full-size pool table, playing the various board games provided, watching provided DVDs, or taking advantage of the Dish TV with outdoor channels and some movie channels on the flat screen.

There are two full bathrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs, with a tank less water heater supplying an endless amount of hot water. New central A/C systems up & down will keep you comfortable and there is a full size washer and dryer for your use.

There are two full-sized picnic tables for outdoor eating. There is also a gas grill with a side burner. Hanging on a nearby tree is a hammock. See if anything is ripe in the small garden and help yourself.

Our neighbor, on three sides, is the Wildlife Refuge providing abundant natural entertainment. We have seen over forty deer at one time on our two and a half acre lot. Migratory birds and waterfowl can be seen from the front porch.

You will find all the utensils you will need and paper products for your stay as well as canned goods, frozen pizzas etc. Just in case you are running late one night and you don’t feel like going back out. There will be a list of some of our favorite places to eat with prices and hours.

THINGS TO DO:

SPORTSMAN:

FISHING: There is shore fishing nearby at the Sunset Beach Resort across Rt.13 .There is public beach access, with ample parking, about a quarter of a mile away. You can swim, fish, collect sea shells, and net crabs. The Sunset Grille is also located at this beach and has live music as well as a disc jockey on the weekends from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

There is also shore fishing at the State Park, free pier fishing at Cape Charles (it also has a beautiful beach) and there is a pier on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge for a fee.

Shore Fishing Tip: Sun up & Sun set is always best and if the tide is high or coming in you have the makings of a great fishing trip. Cast small swimming jigs around the fishing nets and next to the concrete fishing area at the State Park. (Trout, Puppy Drum, Stripers & Flounder) See pictures! Yes the big Striper was caught off the beach.

Crabbing: See locations above for shore fishing. The best water is the shore in the State Park to the left of the fishing dock area. Crab nets are provided and you simply wade the shore line and scoop them up. (They are fast) Late summer is the best time and I like the areas near the nets to the left. Good Luck

PLEASE clean your catch or game somewhere else.

Boats & Kayaks: The waters off of Fisherman’s Island are some of the most fertile in the Chesapeake Bay. There is a kayak launch on the refuge near the Wise Point boat ramp.

Surf Fishing: Assateague Island near Chincoteague is a good place for a day excursion. There is a beach and nature loop open to vehicles in the afternoon as well as waterfowl migration viewing, wild horses, sika deer, etc. This area also has hunting opportunities for deer, waterfowl, rails etc.

I will share any locations I know of for the species you are targeting for the time of year you are visiting. I have made some wonderful memories here and I would like for you and your family to have a similar experience. Best of luck!

Hunting: Deer hunting is offered on the refuge with bow hunting running the longest and a shotgun season to follow. There are two stands on the property. (Use at your own risk) I use them more for observation than anything but you are welcome to use.

Cape Charles: Cape Charles Beach boasts an up and coming town with many unique shops and restaurants. There are several events and various things to do throughout the year--Tall Ships at Cape Charles, Annual Eastern Shore Birding and Wildlife Festival, Bay Creek Golf Club is nearby, Fourth of July Celebration with an amazing fireworks display, Annual Seafood Festival, and Kiptopeke State Park.

Bird Watching & Migration: You’re at the right place. From butterflies, birds and waterfowl they all come right over the house. Sometimes it’s a short ride north to thousands of snow geese in the fields or an early snow that will bring 50 woodcock into the yard.

Eastern Shore, in general, has Wine Tasting and Tours, Concerts, Community Theater, and is loaded with history.

Virginia Beach is 30 miles away, Chincoteague is 67 miles away, and Williamsburg is 80 miles away.

The Refuge is not just for summer, it’s year round entertainment. Most of all it’s a place to be at peace and to enjoy all that the good Lord has given us to watch over. I hope you and your family will take the time to enjoy it if not here somewhere else.

We loved our time. It was a nice quiet and relaxing vacation. Perfect for the family. We had a blast exploring the different beaches, and parks. The house was perfect, cozy and inviting. Had everything and more then needed for a great relaxing time away!

We are definitely coming back!!

  • 5 of 5

We come to the Eastern Shore four or five times a year and usually we stay with relatives, but we have found our new home away from home! My husband, three sons, two daughters-in-law, and one very precious(!) grandson came to the shore for a huge family reunion, and having a 15 month old with us this year we knew that the local hotels would not be an option. We found this house online, and immediately booked it. We loved it! It was so comfortable and reminded us all of the beautiful old home places that our grandparents, aunts and uncles grew up in. It was so clean! (A very welcome change from the hotel we normally stay in.) The beds were so comfortable and we had everything we needed in the kitchen. We didn't have time to take advantage of the surrounding grounds, but my husband was excited that the boat ramp was right down the road. Being an avid hunter and fisherman himself (along with our three boys) the house is right on top of our list for the next visit to the shore! Monty was a pleasure to deal with, and responded immediately to my request. We absolutely loved the place and have already started making plans to return. Thank you Monty for sharing this lovely home!

Home Away From Home!

  • 5 of 5

To say the least, "The Refuge" exceeded our expectations! From the start, the owner was great to deal with, very friendly and accommodating. The house was just as charming. It was as if we were visiting a friend or relative with how cozy and comfortable we felt. My daughter and I biked the trails in the neighboring Wildlife Refuge, I would highly recommend! We spent one day in VA Beach, which involved going across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (also a treat.. highly recommend) Spent one afternoon in Cape Charles town beach and pier, and another in Kiptopeke State Park (nice bay beach and great crabbing) but, mostly we relaxed in this beautiful home and caught up on family time.. as soon as it was time to leave, I wished we had booked a longer stay. Truly a Home Away From Home!

Peaceful Refuge

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed here and had a wonderful time in Cape Charles. The house is charming and beautiful, located on a quiet country road. Every room is clean, comfortable and thoughtfully planned for an enjoyable stay. It is an easy drive to many points of interests without being right on top of everything. We went into Norfolk one day and also drove up to Chincoteague for the day. There is plenty to do with Kiptopeke park nearby. There is fishing & crabbing off the pier and of course the beach, which was never crowded. We rented kayaks one day and paddled out to the WWII boats. The owners were a pleasure to work with and have thought of every detail to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. This property was a perfect fit for our family. I would highly recommend it.

Fantastic 4th of July Vacay!

  • 5 of 5

For many years, my family and friends have been staying in Cape Charles for our July 4th vacation week. Although not directly in the town of Cape Charles this year, the owner and accommodations of the Refuge right off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel by far exceeded our expectations. The owner definitely thought about what a renter might need or desire and made it happen with kindness. If your group likes privacy, the Refuge is the perfect place for you. The yard is great for kick and/or wiffle ball games and the driveway is paved for bike riding (in addition to a nearby bike trail for the more adventurous). Hot tub and pool table were bonuses for the week. Bring your own corn hole boards for more recreation-there is plenty of space. The house is also perfect for fishermen, providing plenty of room for cleaning and parking boats. Sunset Beach is right around the corner for beach and bar entertainment; also very close to more beach fun (with a pass provided for the state park) at Kiptopeke and in Cape Charles. All beds and the TV living area furniture are comfy. The house even has its' own dumpster so no worrying about trash pickup day. The AQUA Restaurant, near the town of Cape Charles, is expensive, but fine dining at its best.... couldn't have asked for a better, most delicious last night on vacation with a great area to watch the 4th of July fireworks (on the 5th...). And yes we were able to stay at the Refuge an extra night- thank goodness because you can't do the 4th of July vacation week without fireworks! We had a blast and the owner of the REFUGE is the host with the most for sure. Thanks for an awesome week!
