About Larry Hultquist

We are newlyweds that each have a home. This lovely cabin will be our second home that I once shared with my widow. We are both employed with the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville. I am originally from Upper Michigan and my wife is an Asheville native. I am an experienced property manager and owner of an apartment building. I am a Landscape Architect and have used my professional expertise to landscape the yard of this home. My wife is an experienced campground manager and administrator. We provide tender loving care to this home which was recently renovated including new wiring, plumbing, heating and air conditioning. Although we work full time we clean and make necessary repairs to this home ourselves. We have a professional cleaning services and handy men we can call when needed. I am an avid bird watcher and have landscaped this home with that in mind. I have always enjoyed the beautiful sunsets and sunrises across the valley to the Blue Ridge Parkway and beyond to the Black Mountain Range of the Appalachian Mountains. We are avid outdoors people and we have always enjoyed the wonderful outdoor activities that Asheville has to offer. I am a watercolor artist with several paintings on display in this home. We enjoy the outdoor sports that are close at hand such as fishing, bicycling, kayaking, camping, and golf. I have an interest in woodworking and have built a tear drop camper that can be made available for extra sleeping quarters with sufficient notice. The camper has a double size air mattress thatt is very comfortable. Kids especially love the camping experience even if it is only in the front yard. I have a son who is a Chef and the kitchen amenities reflect that experience. My first wife was handicapped spending much of her life on crutches or in a wheelchair and so this home has been made fully accessible for her, and can now be utilized by anyone who may be physically handicapped. We strive to make this truly your home away from it all.

Larry Hultquist purchased this cabin in 2000

Why Larry Hultquist chose Asheville

I purchased this log home to be our dream home. It has cozy country charm and yet is so convenient to everything that Asheville has to offer. I have always loved the rustic cozy feeling that only an authentic log home can provide. A morning breakfast with its view to an Appalachian sunrise is simply not to be missed. The sunset views on the opposite side of the house are just as incredible. My wife grew up in Johnson City and we were so lucky to secure jobs in her home town area. We believe Asheville to be one of the most beautiful places in the United States. Asheville is frequently voted one of the best cities of its size to live it. It has a fine reputation as one of the top brewery cities in the country and the Highland Brewery, voted many times as Asheville's favorite, is just a 5-minute walk away along a woodland trail. You can have a beer party, listen to frequent outdoor concerts there, and walk home without fear of driving. You will love all the outdoor opportunities this home will provide you convenient access to. The North Carolina Nature Center and Asheville Azalea Park is within walking distance. Azalea park had the most popular soccer fields in the area, and there is always school age and adult competitions on most any day to watch. Children will find this home so convenient to many of the outdoor activities they love such as swimming in the community pool, playing basketball at the modern courts, playing sand lot volleyball or fishing in the streams or local fishing pond at Azalea park. You can walk along Azalea park trails all the way to the Blue Ridge Parkway where you can enjoy miles and miles of more trails. The fields below are within view of the property is a organic farm and there are bordering ponds frequented by waterfowl. Hawk or geese fly overs of the house are common. Asheville has incredible Blue Grass Music events, movie festivals, art festivals, brewery tasting, art galleries and more to be enjoyed by anyone.

What makes this cabin unique

This is a very comfortable, private, home in a location that provides wonderful cool breezes year around during the very comfortable summer temperatures that are so common in Asheville. Asheville winters are so mild and summers are cool. Many Asheville natives are not even aware there are houses on the ridge above the North Carolina Nature Center, where this home is located. Interstate 40 is only 2 miles away which is a main artery to all surrounding communities. Coming from Michigan, I am always amazed that there are almost no mosquitoes to speak of. I have seen deer, wild turkey, owls. hawks, bear, dove, geese, ducks, fox and other wildlife from my deck. I love the cozy country feeling this home gives me while being convenient to all the outdoor or entertainment activities Asheville has to offer. Following is a description of some of these activities and there convenient proximity to many special tourist destinations in this area:

Guestbook comments from the owner

I won't stay anywhere other than Molly's Ridgetop Retreat when visiting Asheville!

My husband and I and 3 children were guests that stayed at Molly’s Ridgetop Cabin for a week and we loved it. This home has a very cozy comfortable feeling and we loved the views. The kitchen is very well stocked with everything needed and the owner provided us with surprise gift of a bottle of wine and all the coffee we could drink. Although the extra bedrooms were not real large the size was adequate and beds were clean and comfy. We really loved the quiet neighborhood and the surrounding area is so wooded we hardly knew other homes were there. The kids enjoyed the nature center and the community swimming pool they were able to walk to. You really get the feeling your away in the country, but just as advertised this home is convenient to everything Asheville has to offer. The yard is so nice and shady and there were a variety of flowers blooming. The birds were singing everywhere and we loved having breakfast on the deck. The cost is well worth it, and we definitely would highly recommend this home to others who wish to vacation in Asheville.

OWNER RESPONSE: As the owner of Molly’s Ridgetop Cabin Retreat, we are honored to provide a satisfying vacation experience for our guests. We want your experience in our home to truly feel like a home away. We will always do our best to keep our home clean and provide comfortable clean beds for each and every guest. We want to accommodate any type of guest, including those that would come to spend their entire time on vacation in our home or to just use our home as a comfy place to lay your head or serve your home cooked meals, as you explore all the recreational and night life opportunities of our area. We will take pride in always trying to go the extra step in providing our guests the information they might need about the area as though they have never visited Asheville. We will always try to give a little extra for our guests like providing a bottle of wine we have learned they like, or in the least to make sure there is some coffee handy should our guest forget that on their shopping list. We will provide our guests with the type of detergent that our high efficiency washer requires, because that will be an item usually missed by our guests. We will be there for our guests should they have a special need or a question. With your reviews and critique we will progress toward the best experience we can provide our guests.

Just what I needed!!!

  • 5 of 5

Molly's Ridge gave me everything I was looking for as part of my work away from home adventure. The location was the BEST! Seems it was located about 20 minutes or less from most of the things that I wanted to do....Nature, Music, Art....the view off the deck is breathtaking...I have so many pictures of it...I need to do some serious weeding out :)

The house was charming and stocked with everything I needed. I would stay here again in a heartbeat! Thank you Larry!

Spacious cabin with central location

  • 4 of 5

I really enjoyed my time at the cabin. It was spacious, plenty of amenities and perfect location for downtown activities. I thought the location would be a little more remote; it's located in an actual neighborhood, but I don't think we were loud and our neighbors weren't. The cabin was slightly musty; the linens smelled a bit of mildew, but what cabin isn't a bit musty? Also I am a bit of a clean freak, so keep that in mind. What impressed me the most was Larry and his help. I stupidly thought we had booked an extra night in the cabin. So when the cleaning lady arrived we were shocked and wrecked; we had to be at a wedding and find a place to crash in Asheville in the fall! The cleaning lady tried to get us in contact with Larry who was so apologetic he couldn't offer is the cabin; it was all booked up. We ended up getting a hotel, but Larry even refunded us some money as a nice gesture-- even though the fault was all mine! Point is- the cabin is nice, location is great and Larry is great to work with. If I am ever in town again with a large group, I will try to book the same cabin!

Great house!

We had a great time staying here over the holiday weekend! This house was great for large groups with all the sleeping options, and highland brewing is practically in the back yard. I highly recommend this house!

Property was nice and cozy, but a few fans might not be bad.

  • 4 of 5

The property was nice and comfortable. There was plentiful seating, the grill worked well, and yard gave a nice view of the mountains when there weren't trees in the way. The only negative I noted was that the house retained a lot of heat when cooking inside and when the afternoon sun was shining. The lack of fans in a few rooms, such as the front bedroom and lounge area, helped keep the warmth. A few standing fans or ceiling fans would go a long way to help disperse the warmth. Overall, though, the place was excellent and was in walking distance to a great brewery.

Great place to stay in Asheville

  • 5 of 5

I recently spent a weekend at Molly's Ridge Top Cabin with my family. We loved the location. It is near places we wanted to go (Biltmore and downtown Asheville), and it was also in a quiet, scenic neighborhood.

The owner is great! Prior to our stay, we was quick to respond to the few questions I had. When we arrived, everything was in great order, with many amenities provided, including coffee, dishes, cooking spices, bed sheets, towels, etc.

I would definitely stay there again.

Owner's Response: In reading through my growing number of reviews, as I often do I have learned many interesting things about our house? My groups are diverse, vary in numbers, come to Asheville for many different reasons and expect varying degrees of accommodations, so I understand and would expect a varying range of reviews that we have received. We learn from these reviews and we appreciate the great reviews and we do our very best to correct and improve the negatives and carry through on the good ideas. America is a diverse place and we do not discriminate, we welcome guests for whatever reason they choose to vacation in Asheville. Some of our guests are business people and are here to attend important meetings or events in their lives; such as the many guests we have had attending wedding, bachelor and bachelorette gatherings or reunions. We pride our house as being comfortable to a group of up to 8 or even 10 guests, or quiet and serene for just a couple. We call our home a retreat for a reason. Here are some things that I have learned from my guests in reading reviews. Some ideas and requests have been improved, and other ideas are so in contrast with one another that it is best left alone. These are not in order of importance by any means. • We have installed trundle beds in the extra bedrooms because they are comfortable and offer our guests diversity of sleeping arrangements. A trundle beds has a sturdy wooden frame with two single mattresses with one mattress stored beneath the other. These mattresses can be separated in the room for those who would not choose to sleep together or joined to become a queen sized bed comfortable for a couple. The frame and mattress can even be moved outside of the bedroom for those who would even choose to have their own private space somewhere in the house. • We have placed two comfortable futons in shared, but night time private rooms in the house. Futons are comfortable as a couch or as a bed in my opinion, because I slept on one for years. • Diverse people all have varying opinions of what is a comfortable mattress. Some like firm, some soft, some like the floor. We tried the sleep number bed mattress once, but most guests failed to fit it to their needs. We have high quality medium firm mattress to be middle of the road on this. We store a section of plywood beneath the bed for those who like it firm and a foam mattress fitting for those who want a little extra softness.

Handicap Accessible Amenities

• This home is entirely on one floor and has an accessible ramp at the front door. I highly recommend that guests who are wheel chair bound contact me about accessibility before booking this home. Small power and manual chair can access all rooms in this home but there are transitions that may be difficult. I had one guest with a large power chair that could not access either bathroom and they could not transfer to the toilet easily. The house has a walk-in tub that is accessible especially to the elderly. Please note that this is a 75 year old cabin and it does not meet all accessibility codes
