About Scott and Lynne Van Dusen

We relocated to Portland in 2010 because of the vibrant and creative environment in and around the city, and to be within the amazing and beautiful Pacific Northwest region.

Scott and Lynne Van Dusen purchased this house in 2010

Why Scott and Lynne Van Dusen chose Sellwood - Moreland

We love Portland and the Pacific Northwest, and chose this house in Sellwood because the location is close to everything we need and enjoy, we can walk to almost everything from the house, and the neighborhood has a great comfortable vibe.

What makes this house unique

This cozy Bungalow has more depth than one would think. There are nice spaces like the upstairs room for reading and relaxing with a rocking chair and sofa/futon, and the finished basement with a private queen bed, full bathroom, sofa/futon, bucket chairs, TV and laundry. One of our favorite features of this house is the front porch, which on warmer days, is literally an extra outdoor room overlooking the garden below.

Just steps away are two amazing parks, Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge, Riverfront Park along the river, Oaks Amusement Park, some of Portland's finest restaurants, some great local casual dining including food carts, a New Seasons market, Sellwood's Antique Row, some of Portland's most unique shops, a public library, public transit, and more.

Comfort and convenience

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time here. What a lovely, clean and inviting house. So much room. The hosts, Scott and Lynne, are kind people and make themselves available when you have a question or need something. The neighborhood is quiet, and the house is a short walk to coffee shops, restaurants, lots of antique stores and a New Seasons Market. The house comes with a vintage gas stove that is fun to use and brings you back to another era. Laundry in the basement is convenient, the kitchen is well-equipped--no dishwasher but we didn't mind hand washing at all. We visit our daughter at college when we are here, and this house will be part of our fond memories of her time in Portland. I feel so lucky that we found this house. What a gem!

Excellent location and nice house!

  • 4 of 5

I wish that I could have given 4.5 stars. The house was very nice and had the room that we needed; even though we didn't spend a lot of time in it. The owners were helpful and in communication if needed. The only issues we had were minimal. We would have liked some pillows that were not down and the moldy caulk around the kitchen sink is a pet peeve that I don't like. Other than those couple of things the house was nice and clean and had what was needed and expected. The location was also great! It put us right in the middle of all our activities, and there were many local shops and restaurants near by. We would gladly rent again if we were going to be in the area!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the thoughtful review and helpful feedback. We are currently replacing the down pillows in the main bedroom with plush non-down, which is good idea. And we are regularly addressing the various tasks around the house as to maintain a clean and comfortable home, including grout mold (which has been taken care of). Thanks again for being our guests, and we look forward to another opportunity.

Nice house and conveniently located.

  • 3 of 5

Enjoyed our stay but kept up one night past midnight by people playing basketball at the school next door. Also the downstairs bedroom lacked a closet or dresser.

Owner's Response: Thank you for providing feedback & for being our guests. It's rare to have late night disturbances outside, although if necessary it's OK to ask folks to tone down, as with any neighborhood. We are always looking at adding or improving our household furnishings, including more options in the downstairs bed area. Thanks again.

Family Reunion in Portland

  • 3 of 5

Stayed at the Sellwood property on Miller Street. The house fit our needs for a long weekend and the walking distance to restaurants and the market on 13th street was ideal.

Only complaint was the two outside chairs on the front deck were painted improperly resulting in a red stain coming off on a new shirt of one of our family members. The dry cleaner was unable to get the stain out. Scott and Lynne; please remove the chairs or advise future guests not to sit in the chairs. We're sure the humid weather in mid September contributed to the problem.

Otherwise we enjoyed our stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the feedback. We're glad the house worked for your visit, & very sorry about the stain on the shirt...we never expected that. We're planning to replace those chairs anyway for completely different reasons. We're happy to have you as guests again when returning to Portland.

fantastic house in great neighborhood

  • 4 of 5

First off, this house located in a phenomenally, walkable urban neighborhood. If location is important to you then you can't ask for a better location. You're close to Portland's great mass transit-which means you can conveniently get to just about all of Portland's fantastic attractions. The neighborhood is bustling and that can mean a bit more noise than you'd like. But the home is nice and secluded so that's a plus. Also, the neighborhood is super safe. We walked all over the place-even at night-and felt safe the while time. We spent just about every morning and evening we were there sipping coffee or wine on the porch.

As for the house itself-very comfortable and roomie. We've got a family of 4 and everyone got their own space. The home was clean and had all the sheets, towels, utensils, appliances, etc. you could want. I'll be honest, I was a little intimidated by the stove. But the washer, dryer, fridge were all great. And we went with teenagers and they sure can vouch for the wifi. When we were there the weather got pretty warm (close to 100) and the house retained a comfortable temperature.

We couldn't ask for better hosts. They were easy to work with. Prompt in getting back to us with questions and reliable-if they said they were going to do something they did it...when they said it was going to get done. And they also nicely provided all sorts of helpful ideas and reference material about the area.

Portland can be pretty damp and Portland basements aren't always great for people with allergies, so you'll want to be careful there...although my 16 year spent a week down there and didn't have a problem.

I whole heartedly recommend it this Sellwood bungalow.
