You aren't just renting a house, you're booking an authentic country getaway. The Bar SZ Ranch is a genuine working family ranch. A few days here will immerse you in a lifestyle that we love to share with others. Enjoy horseback riding, roping, hayrides, skeet and trap shooting, archery, seasonal creek walking, and hiking. And when the sun goes down, relax as a rancher would with a BBQ, bonfire, and epic star gazing.
This house is extremely unique as it is located on a very historical property in the heart of San Benito County. The property is home to what was once the art studio of world famous painter, Thomas Kinkade. It was also once home to the world famous cow horse Doc Bar. The house sits in the middle of an active horse pasture, allowing you to wake up to horses grazing outside your window! Picture windows throughout the house allow for breath taking views across the entire ranch. It is truly an amazing place to get away, relax, and rejuvenate.
The grounds are home to thousands of native birds and animals. We are just 10 minutes from the Pinnacles National Park which offers world-class hikes, rock climbing, and outdoor educational classes. The ranch is located 40 minutes from a town with shopping and restaurants.
*Note: We have 2 other houses and 2 glamping horse stalls if you need to accommodate a larger group, just search Bar SZ Ranch.

Tim & Michelle Borland purchased this house in 2014
This is a working ranch and we welcome you to enjoy all aspects of ranch life with us (as much as you would like)! There is a managing family who lives on the property should you need anything. They are extremely happy to assist with the ranch lifestyle from starting camp fires, to barbequing on our large outdoor grill, running to get supplies from town, or helping you experience the working side of the ranch. We want everyone's experience to be unique and suited to their personal desires. Daily chores include caring for all the ranch animals, tending to gardens, planted fields, and moving cattle, just to name a few. We really enjoy sharing all that this magnificent ranch has to offer!
It does a body good to get out in the country, take a deep breath, and relax. There is no traffic, noise, or people, just quiet country living that will leave you refreshed and rejuvenated.
We loved the ranch, We visited the Bar SZ as part of a Pinnacles National Park Hiking Trip.
We enjoyed exploring the ranch and playing with the goats and horses. We brought our giant telescope and tour of the night sky - A best place for a star party.
The host, Tim could not have been more accommodating. He was always ready to help.
Thank you Tim for the fun times!
Tim and Michelle gave us the warmest of welcomes to their beautiful ranch. We enjoyed exploring the property, watching the goats and horses, and relaxing in the ranch house. You couldn't hope for more helpful or friendly hosts.
The stay at the ranch was unbelievable. The feeling is that you are not a guest but belong there. It is a place where you can be as active as you want or simply relax and feel nurtured.
We visited the Bar SZ as part of a horsemanship group of almost 30 people and horses. Amazingly, there was plenty of room for everyone. We stayed in the art studio above and it's just a short walk to the main house.
The horse was once the home of the legendary Hall of Fame Quarter Horse Doc Bar. More recently it was the mountain retreat of Thomas Kinkade who's art adorns almost every interior.
The amenities were great. There was hiking and horseback riding. We rented the quad for a trip to the scenic vista across the road. Take your camera!
The hosts, Tim and Michelle could not have been more accommodating. Even with the needs of thirty people AND their horses, they were always ready to solve a problem (which were few) or make a suggestion as to how to enjoy the property more thoroughly.
We would have loved to driven over to the Pinnacles National Forest but we'll have to save that for our next trip!
This is a great property for horse lovers, but would also be perfect for family reunions, weddings, or company retreats.
Five stars are not enough!
