Overview

About the property

Large 3 bedrm w/ double living room, renovated kitchen & fantastic front porch!!

Charming and spacious row house with a front porch in one of DC's great neighborhoods. Walking distance to everything! You will instantly feel at home in this 1880 row house just one block from Union Station (Red Line Metro stop) and only 4 to 5 blocks from the Capitol Building, Supreme Court, and Library of Congress. A beautiful tree-lined walk past decorative water fountains is all that separates you from all the museums, monuments and memorials on the National Mall.

You will be amazed with the convenience and elegance of Union Station and its Red Line Metro stop. The Red Line is the main backbone of the DC Metro -- connecting to all of the other lines -- so the entire metro area is just minutes away -- pop over to Gallery Place/China Town, Metro Center, Dupont Circle, the National Zoo, or Foggy Bottom without the hassle of traffic or parking. If you are looking for a taxi, there is always a line of them waiting in front of Union Station. You can also catch many of the tour buses and the famous amphibious duck tours at Union Station as well. If you want to get around by bicycle, there is also a Capital Bike Share station at Union Station — great for getting around on the mall — ride them to the White House or the Washington, Lincoln, and Jefferson Monuments.

Just around the corner from the house is the world's best bagel shop (no better sandwiches anywhere) and several other great neighborhood restaurants with outside seating along Massachusetts Avenue. Ask for Milton at La Loma -- the best margaritas around -- relaxing under shade umbrellas is one of the best ways to pass an afternoon or evening. We are also conveniently located to Eastern Market and all the shops and restaurants along Pennsylvania Avenue and 8th Street SE (about 1 mile away). We are even closer (just a few blocks) to one of the hottest growing areas in all of DC: the H Street Corridor with all of its great restaurants, bars, and boutique shopping.

If you want to get your own groceries and cook, there is a brand new Giant grocery store that just opened up 3 blocks away. The kitchen is fully stocked for even the most demanding chef. Entertain in the dining room or enjoy hosting on the back patio area just off the kitchen.

The house is spacious with two living rooms -- one with a fireplace, the other with a floor-to-ceiling bay window looking out on E Street. The kitchen has a cozy breakfast nook and small bar seating area. Or you can choose among several options for sitting outside. There is the huge front porch, perfect for people watching, or relax in the more private back patio area, or choose instead to sit on the second floor back deck. Enough space for everyone to spread out and you can try a different spot to relax every evening. If you want even more space, ask us about our English basement studio space with separate entrance (850 square feet -- sleeps 2-4 -- full eat-in kitchen)(VRBO#577562).

The renovated kitchen has granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, a 15 bottle wine cooler waiting to be filled, and a Keurig coffee maker that has you one button push away from a fresh brewed cup of coffee or tea (compliments of the house).

Upstairs, the master bedroom is exquisite — from the king size bed you can enjoy the beautiful view through the floor to ceiling bay windows. The middle bedroom has a double bed with a twin bunk bed. The back bedroom has a queen bed and opens out onto the back deck. There are two full size bathrooms with bathtub/shower combination on the second floor and a half bath on the first floor. Full size top-loading washing machine and dryer on the first floor.

Wi-fi internet throughout the house. TVs in the living room and master bedroom (Direct TV expanded package with HBO and Showtime -- parental controls available). TVs are also connected to internet for easy ordering of NetFlix movies. We also have a bunch of family board games and card games available.

Finally, we are very conveniently located for travelers coming in and out of the city. Washington National Airport is less than 3 miles away (15-20 minutes in good traffic) or you can take Metro from Union Station directly to National Airport. We are, of course, super convenient for anyone traveling by train — trains depart Union Station almost every hour for destinations up and down the east coast — catch a train and be in Manhattan in less than 4 hours (2 hours if you take the express Acela train) -- go catch a Broadway show!

Whatever your interest, whatever your need, we are confident you will feel at home while enjoying your vacation or tending to business in the nation’s capital.

Why Nevena S Hougen chose District of Columbia (Washington DC)

We love Capitol Hill and it is so convenient to all the sites in Washington DC. We are only one block to the Union Station Metro and Amtrak express train to New York. It takes less then 205minutes walking to get to National Monument, 10 min to Capitol Building, Library of Congress and Supreme Court. All tourist attractions are convenient and there is lots to do right here in the neighborhood. There is a lot of restaurants with great food, parks and is very safe, historic and family oriented. The neighbors are wonderful. It is located in the heart of the Capitol Hill historic district. Eastern Market is very close by where you can get fresh and organic food, art and vintage clothing, antique furniture , etc.

Location is perfect for anything you want to do in Washington DC and it’s a great jumping off point if you want to explore Virginia and Maryland.

What makes this house unique

By staying in our very cozy and charming home, you will get to experience what it is like really living in the Historic Nations Capital.

Great place to stay!

  • 4 of 5

The Blue House is very inviting. We especially loved sitting in the cooler evenings on the front porch, watching the world go by! Our two grandsons enjoyed having enough space where they could each do their own thing and the adults had plenty of space to stretch out as well. Great location, close to metro, restaurants, Union Station. Uber is super cheap and easy to use.

Vintage style with modern comforts.

  • 5 of 5

This house easily accommodates families, with one of the bedrooms furnished for children (although adults could easily use the beds).

An interesting and very comfortable home from home. Within an easy walk of all the Capitol Hill attractions, the Metro at Union Station is even closer.

The house is peaceful and cosy after a day's hard sightseeing, much of the furniture is upcycled and painted, and this makes it far more interesting and individual than most rentals. Sofas and beds very comfortable. The house was as much a part of our holiday as the DC attractions.

As other reviews mention there does need to be some attention to upkeep - the microwave/ vent above the cooker was still not working and we set the fire alarm off (there is a freestanding microwave on the countertop). The cooker has a knob missing but a new dishwasher was fitted the day we checked in. The rear yard area was also in need of a spring tidy up and the left hand fence needed propping up - this makes it unsafe for children to use the yard. The house next door is being renovated/rebuilt and there is a major building project in the next street. The builders next door started at 7.15am one morning but usually later during our 7 day stay and of course in a city noise is only to be expected during the day. Building work had usually finished by 5pm so the evenings were quiet.

The interesting furnishings and comfort of this house, along with its fantastic safe location would definitely bring us back.

Nevena was very easy to work with although there was some confusion with the lock code - we had been given the code a few days before we were due to check in but unfortunately one of the numbers given was wrong.

We loved Blue House and hope to stay there again on our next trip to Washington D.C.!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at Blue House, a historic (1880) house on a beautiful street, close to the center of our national government. Our family (grandparents, son and daughter-in-law, grandson age 12, and granddaughter age 10) felt very special living in this house for a week. Three of us took AMTRAK to DC, arriving at Union Station, and three drove by car from NC. We parked the car, and never used it until the day we left! Union Station is so convenient, and the walk from AMTRAK at Union Station, pulling our suitcases behind us was closer than walking from a plane to the parking lot! My husband's favorite experience was getting up early each day, walking to Union Station for a newspaper and Starbucks (even though there was a fully-stocked Keurig coffee machine in the kitchen) and returning to read the Sports page on the back fenced patio. The other early risers sat on the front porch watching people--walking dogs or heading to work. That is how we met three delightful neighbor residents. They were envious of us sitting on the porch and not having to go to work, and we were envious of them being able to live on this friendly, tree-lined historic street year-round! Our daughter-in-law looked forward each morning to a made-to-order (not fast food!) bacon and egg biscuit and smoothie, from the bakery two blocks down 2nd St. We took advantage of this location to walk or go by Metro to all our destinations: baseball games at Nationals Park-our Cardinals lost 2 of 3 games :(, tour of the Capitol building, visiting 3 Smithsonian Museums and all the famous monuments on/near the Mall, and even out to the National Zoo, featuring pandas, delightful sea lions, lemurs, elephants, et. al. Two of us walked up to H St. one evening to ride the trolley to the end and back to 3rd St, giving us another opportunity to explore this classic historic Washington D.C. neighborhood. In addition to location, location, location, Blue House is spacious with 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, kitchen, laundry area, beautiful natural wood floors - a tiny creak adds character to the elegant historic feel. It was comfortable for 4 adults, two kids, & could easily accommodate 2 or 3 more. The kitchen was well supplied with all our needs for baking a birthday cake and a few meals, although we ate out for most meals. We recommend Founding Farmers, a short Metro ride away! Order the popcorn appetizer- serves 6+! Blue House beats staying in a nondescript hotel! We recommend it!

Very nice property - walking distance to Union Station

  • 5 of 5

Its close proximity to Union Station was what made me select this property. It's also two blocks away from a few small restaurants and a neighborhood grocery store. The house was perfectly fine for my wife and me and our 4 elementary aged children.

great location - needs a little TLC

  • 3 of 5

The location of this property is excellent for a DC tourist visit. The house has most things you would expect in a VRBO property, but the owner needs to pay more attention to maintenance. The top rack in the dishwasher is dysfunctional - hard to get out and almost impossible to get back in. At the end of our visit, the dishwasher crapped out entirely - wouldn't come on. We were leaving when the dishwasher failed to come on, so it wasn't a big deal. One of the night table lamps in the master is busted - the switch does not work. Hardware in the master bath is coming undone. This did not cause a problem with bathing - it just looks a bit slum-like. A busted microwave was left in place but a counter top unit was provided - again, a bit slum-like. You get the idea. The owner is not doing a great job on maintenance.

Aside from maintenance issues, the owner failed to provide the lock box code on the day before our arrival as had been committed. Based on reviews, this is not the first time this happened. Before we flew from Colorado to DC, I sent an email asking her to provide the code, but she failed to respond. I made calls to back-up numbers/persons provided by the owner from Dulles, and I got a call with the code before our Uber got us to the unit, but this is unsatisfactory - a simple thing ignored repeatedly.

There are no wash clothes in the unit. Also, there is no hair dryer - perhaps not standard for VRBO, but it would have been appreciated by the women in our group.

It snowed while we were there, and I could not find a snow shovel. The steps out to the street were frightening.

Aside from the good location, the unit was roomy, and the beds were comfy. But I would not stay here again.
