Casa Caribbean… Beachfront penthouse vacation condo

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,500 sq. ft.
Property type condo
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Akumal Mexico's 'Casa Caribbean' is a spacious waterfront penthouse condo in a private location on Half Moon Bay overlooking a white sand beach and the azure Caribbean on Mexico's Mayan Riviera.

* Snorkeling in Half-Moon Bay's own magical coral reef right in front of the apartment

* Short walk to wonderful Snorkeling at renowned Yal-Ku Lagoon

* Minutes from Akumal's dive shops, restaurants, grocery stores, craft boutiques, and ecological center dedicated to preserving the area's beauty and native Mayan culture

Driving Tips: It is about an hour drive south of Cancun. The roads have improved with overpasses in Playa del Carmen but be careful to obey the speed limit… if not you will be stopped.

• To get to Akumal entrance you drive past the pedestrian overpass, stay in the left lane, you will take a u-turn to go back to the entrance a short distance on the right.

The local store in town (Super Chomak) is expensive so if you want to buy groceries stop at Chedraui on your right between Playa del Carmen and Akumal… across fromPuerto Aventuras.

We also like Soriana in Centro Maya mall just past Sam's Club in Playa del Carmen (on your right) but it is more difficult to get to…you have to get off the road, turn around and go back to turn into the mall.

There is a farmer's market on saturdays across from Chomak (and maybe wednesdays also).

Restaurants: we love La Lunita right next to the condo…(our guests get 15% discounts)... they will even deliver dinner for dinner on the terrace. La Lunita is open for lunch and dinner offering indoor or beach seating with tables on the sand or their wooden deck on the beach. It is a great place to dine under the moonlight, quite romantic! La Lunita specializes in classic Mexican cuisine and seafood.

La Buena Vida is good…and fun (swings at the bar and a treehouse)… a short walk from condo.

Lol-Ha has a palapa style beach bar with open air tables under roof and pizza at Lol-Ha Pizzeria.

Main beach Akumal Bay to right of the arch.

Lonchería… inexpensive local place. Local Mexican dishes, breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Location: next to Chomack grocery store.

Turtle Bay Cafe & Bakery bakes its own breads, cakes, cookies. Good hearty breakfasts (American and Mexican food).

Location: Located in central Akumal across from Akumal Bay

La Cueva del Pescador

The restaurant has a sand floor, interior and exterior seating, good fish. Can get buggy if there is not a breeze. It's located next to Turtle Bay.

If you like snorkeling go straight out about 200 yards from the condo to the dark area which is all coral and beautiful. If it is windy you may wish to snorkel at Akumal Bay where the reef is not as nice but it is less windy. Half Moon Bay where we are has a beautiful sand beach but you may wish to wear water shoes because the sand ends where the water begins. At Akumal Bay the sand goes way out so no water shoes are needed.

Yal-Ku Lagoon is quite near Casa Caribbean (you could walk)… and wonderful….

Yal-ku Lagoon is wonderful for both adults and children. There are no ocean waves. There are several easy entry stairs with railing into the lagoon. Easy, gentle slow paced snorkeling. Great variety of gorgeous fish that are not intimidated by humans. Entry into the lagoon is by jumping off a rocky ledge, or using stairs to enter in approximately 6-7 feet deep water. Take caution when bringing younger children who are not comfortable if they can’t touh the bottom or enter by walking in from land.

Admission is $9.00 U.S.A. or 95 pesos. Limited palapa rentals are $20US for the day if you would like an area with seating, shade and privacy. Alcoholic beverages are not welcome at the lagoon. Buy their biodegradable sunscreen or bring biodegradable that you’ve purchased elsewhere. Wear a t-shirt -- even on an overcast day you can really get a sunburn. There are eco-friendly elevated pit toilets and an outside shower. Definitely bring an underwater camera. Fabulous place to spend all or part of a day. There is a snack bar. Open 8 - 5:30 daily.

We love Paraiso Beach in Tulum which is a wide and long beach that goes from the Tulum ruins to probably a mile south of the ruins. It has to be one of the most beautiful white coral beaches in the world. It is not a snorkeling beach but great for a swim and a Margarita.

There are extra beach towels in the chest in master bedroom. Ask the maids if you need more. Roberto is a great resource…very helpful…so ask him about anything I might have missed.

While you might not want to leave the tranquility of Casa Caribbean, adventures await! Hike through Xcaret Eco-park, scuba dive in nearby caves (cenotes), golf at Puerto Aventura or shop in Playa del Carmen or other exciting locations just north of Akumal. Or, head south and explore the Mayan ruins of Tulum or one of our favorite place, Coba.

About Scott and Paula Blaker

We are a couple that grew up in New England and have called Washington state home since 2000. We currently work abroad for the US State Department and recently bought this amazing condo in Akumal. We look forward to spending a lot of time here with family and friends. Why the Owner Chose Akumal: We fell in love with the area and when we saw the incredible view from the large balcony and living room from this penthouse condo, we knew we wanted to buy this magical haven. Roberto, the long standing property manager who is on-site, is a gem with a long history of feedback from renters as being a helpful, reliable and fantastic resource for renters. We love the laid back feeling of the area, the rich and healthy reef with incredible snorkeling and diving just in front of the place. We love the sound of the surf and lack of motor noise, yet also appreciate that fun motor and water sport activities are available not far up or down the coastline for our older children and future grandchildren. It is also a great launching point from which to explore the richness that the Yucatan peninsula has to offer, including Tulum and Coba Mayan ruins and Sian Ka'an nature preserve. The Unique Benefits at this Condo: The bird watching in the jungle area behind us and the snorkeling right in front of us is among the best in the world. The coral reef is healthy and thriving. Turtles nest on the beach in summer and watching them hatch is an incredible experience!

Scott and Paula Blaker purchased this condo in 2014

Fabulous time!

My husband and I and my husband's sister stayed at Scott's condo for a week. We had a great time. The condo was spacious, the deck was a great place to hang out and the view was amazing. Roberto, the manager was responsive to our needs. We enjoyed eating at La Lunita and at La Buena Vida and many of the other restaurants in the town of Akumal. There was always a recliner under a palapa to sit in by the beach. We spent one day at the ruins in Tulum and another day shopping in Playa Del Carmen and checked out both of those beaches, We were always happy to get back to our beach at La Mirage. We also spent a day at the lagoon nearby snorkeling. That is something not to be missed. There were many nearby places for outdoor adventures that we did not participate in. We hope to come back again for a longer stay!

Amazing Location. Amazing Food. Amazing Unit!!

  • 5 of 5

This place is awesome! The service is awesome, The views are awesome! The restaurant downstairs is AWESOME! The local food is awesome! The Mexican locals are awesome! Need I say more!? OK I will...

I love searching VRBO for just the right spot that will fit my trips needs and did this place fit the bill. This trip was for my girlfriend of 1 year and I so I wanted a romantic beachfront place. She is not a scuba diver, yet,(scuba diving is ONE of the many reasons I visit the Yucatan.. for the 6th time) so snorkeling and turtles was key. I didn't want to spend our complete 10 day Yucatan stay amidst the hordes of crowds that visit here ( we stayed at Casa Caribbean for 6 nights and 4 in PDC), I wanted a place slightly off the beaten path but still close to the many goods the peninsula offers. I wanted to visit Tulum without a long drive, I wanted fishing close by, wanted several good Mayan ruins, wanted good cenotes, and I wanted a 180 degree view of the ocean from my deck. This place offers all that and more! The beach is pretty much deserted during the day and night. One sight down fall is all the beach sand is above the waterline. Once in the water it is good to have on some type of footwear as the rocks are kinda big and almost impossible to walk on but once you float out 50 ft to snorkel.. who cares about walking!

I also love to research restaurants for my travels and the food we ate during our stay on the pennisula was outstanding. We ate at a plethora of researched restaurants in PDC, Tulum, Akulmal and multiple places in between( like tacos? El Arbolito in Puerto Aventuras in AMAZING! you have no idea how good tacos really are!). Little did we know one of of the gems of dining was on the ground floor of Casa Carib! The food is outstanding, the service was top notch and how nice is it to decide to dine out for the night all you have to do is leave your footwear in the room, walk downstairs and have fabulous meal with your toes in the sand! thanks Scott and Paula for a vacation that goes down in the history books! Well be back!!

My bad if i missed a few typos. its snowing outside and I gotta start my snow removal for the day. we have record breaking January snowfall for Lake Tahoe ... over 200" and counting..gotta go!!!

We had a wonderful time at Scott's condo. We went with our 2 kids age 10 and 12 and condo was perfect for us. We rented a car and checked out the ruins in Coba (about 45 miles east of Tulum) and also went to the Cenotes at Aktun Chen (15 minute drive/between Akumul andTulum). The tour buses come at 3:00 to the Cenotes, so we went about 10 and barely anyone was there. We also had fun relaxing on the beach right in front of the condo. Very quiet , nice lounge chairs and umbrellas and a shared pool. We spent hours snorkeling and playing in the water. Water shoes recommended. We enjoyed the restaurants along the beach and had a few happy hours at La Lunita which is attached to the building. The condo has everything we needed and Roberto the manager was very helpful with questions we had. Thank you for sharing your lovely getaway! We hope to return for a longer stay next time!

If you want serenity, beauty and luxury, then this condo and town is for you. Akumal is a small, quaint town made up a two lane street that meanders by condos and Half Moon Bay, with many restaurants. The condo is well appointed with a large deck where you just see the beach and bay. It is towards the end of the street and no building on the north end of the condo. We stayed there Jan 26- Feb 8 of 2016 and have reservations for 2017. Roberto is the manager, he is on site 24/7, and helped make our stay so wonderful. Many attractions not far out in the main highway. You will be spoiled by the daily maid service, who are very pleasant and trustworthy. A few suggestions: Bring snorkel gear, we didn't use fins or a life vest, water is not deep out to the 2nd largest Barrier Reef. It's a short swim out and water shoes a must because some small rocks in the water and snorkeling fantastic. Pack light. A great one day, inexpensive laundry service in town. Visit Myril, about 40 minutes down south on the main highway. It didn't come up in our research of things to do. Google it. No reservations needed, the earlier in the day the better. Rent a bike just down from the condo to explore the town and visit The Lagoon which about a mile away for incredible snorkeling. Happy travels. 😎

We are so thankful for having such an amazing honeymoon at Scott's condo. We had our 1.5 yr old with us and this unit could not have been more perfect for what we were looking for after a week all inclusive in Playa after our destination wedding. We decided to rent a Van as the recommended so that we could explore Tulum and the surrounding area. The kitchen had more then enough cooking utensils and appliances and the home was beautifully decorated with brand new furniture. We grocery shopped as recommended in Playa before coming and cooked a big meal at least once a day. We enjoyed the restaurant connected to the building...their coconut shrimp and margaritas are to die for. Also we loved le Buena Vida and spent a lot of our time there. The staff was amazing...there is also a café at the entrance of town we watched lots of sports games, got our daily espresso and enjoyed dinner as well. Food was Delicious...we met lots of Americans that lived there who eat at these spots often. We could not snorkel outside of the condo as the kelp was coming in constantly...but we did go to Turtle bay close by and swam with sea turtles on our own (recommended by property manager Roberto). No need to pay to snorkel in a group if you have done it before. Scott even had a set of snorkel gear, beach chairs (we enjoyed in Tulum) and a boogie board to enjoy for his guests. My parents stayed in the unit below us which was also nice...however, if we had a choice (it was nice to see another unit and get to compare) we would stay again hands down on the third floor in this unit. We will be back with our family to visit Akumal soon. Booking was very easy and Roberto on site was great!!! Thanks again for making your home a paradise for your guests!!!

Perfect family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the condo for a week with our 2 teenage boys. It was exactly what we were looking for in a vacation rental. As others have mentioned, the condo is walking distance to some great restaurants, the lagoon, and 2 bays. The massive balcony overlooking Half Moon Bay, access to the pool, and overall size of the condo were our favorites.

This was my second trip to Akumal and I love how peaceful it is. There is plenty to do in town. However, I do recommend having a rental car since Akumal is a perfect location for people looking for a neutral jumping off point for all of their adventures.
