Stay in Murphys in the heart of the Gold Country and within an easy drive of dozens of wineries, good places to eat and glorious mountain terrain.

The Stone Annex accommodates two guests with comfortable amenities in more than 600 square feet. The Annex includes one large bedroom, a full bath, a living room with fold-out futon, hallway and mini-kitchen. The Annex can handle up to two additional guests in the comfortable living room for a small extra charge. Children are free.

Spring is here with festivals, wine tours and the Jumping Frog Celebration.

The hills are green in the Mother Lode, and mountains just up Highway 4 still have lots of snow. Fishing season has begun.

Area wineries are open year-round, as is Calaveras Big Trees State Park. The park offers free guided walks every Saturday, and every day during the summer. Check their website for details at .

Gold Rush history is all around us.

Yosemite National Park is within a day trip, and is truly spectacular in winter and Spring.

We are strategically located between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite, and this is an ideal jumping off place for exploring the best of California. It is a great place to vacation, or spend a quiet weekend.

The Annex is decorated throughout with the local art and photography, and every room is freshly painted and equipped with comfortable furniture.

The bedroom has a queen-sized bed, large closet, desk/dressing table and chairs. If you need it, we have extra blankets, an ironing board and iron.

The living room has the sofa/futon, a comfortable recliner chair, a television with cable and an electric 'fireplace' with heater. WiFi is available.

The mini-kitchen has a slate counter, a mini- refrigerator and a new microwave. We added a counter top convection/toaster oven, plus coffee maker and basic kitchen supplies. Fresh ground coffee awaits guests.

And in response to a guest's suggestion we recently added a grill with a cook-top just outside the door.

And, an essential in Murphys, a wine bottle opener and wine glasses.

New to Murphys this year are three shops that specialize in beer, including an Irish Pub.

Several good restaurants are nearby, and TV trays are provided for those who want to eat a light meal at home. Or you can grill and eat outdoors in lawn chairs under an umbrella in good weather.

A combination washer-dryer is available.

The bathroom is outfitted with all you need. Grab bars have been added to shower/tub and toilet for added comfort and safety.

Ample parking is available within feet of the front door.

Our vacation Annex is a short walk to downtown Murphys, and a short drive to major attractions.

We have hiking year-round, fishing, kayaking, mountain climbing, cave exploring and more. Just outside town you will find vineyards, streams and mountains and forests.

We want our guests to be as comfortable as possible. So we completely refurbished part of an 80-year-old house. Most guests come for weekend visits, but the Annex is comfortable for longer stays so you can explore what all region has to offer.

And if you just want to hang out, there are all those wineries and restaurants within eight blocks.

We are about a ten minute walk to Main Street. We are away from the

noise, but close enough to get there quickly.

Bring your bikes.

Ironstone Winery, just outside of town, has tours, concerts, a museum, food and stunning gardens.

We are about a three hour drive from the San Francisco Bay Area or Sacramento, or less to Yosemite National Park.

The town is located on State Highway 4 which leads up to the Bear Valley Ski Resort in winter, and across the High Sierra to the East when the snow melts.

Two great California State Parks are close by: Calaveras Big Trees is to the east, about 15 miles uphill, home to 6,000 acres of wilderness including two Giant Sequoia groves; and Columbia State Park, where the Gold Rush days are preserved and celebrated, is just south along historic Highway 49.

If you need more wineries, Amador County is just north.

There's more to Murphys than wine. The town also boast a craft brew pub, several fine restaurants, history tours, various shops including consignment, a chocolate shop and a village toy store.

You can get almost any kind of food here from fine steaks, Italian, Mexican, Organic, Vegetarian and crafted pizza.

Murphys has no fast food franchise operations, and most local businesses are privately owned and operated.

The Annex owners live next door. Your other temporary neighbors include local chefs and several wine makers.

What We Expect

Have a good time and be good guests. We will do whatever we can to help.

Just leave the apartment reasonably neat, which helps us keep the cleaning fee lowest in town.

About Sanders and Pat LaMont

We retired to Calaveras County ten years ago, originally to an isolated cabin in the mountains. Eventually we settled in Murphys because we love its feeling of community. We also enjoy the easy access to the mountains for hiking and skiing, great places to eat (our hobby) and musical events.

Many of our friends are musicians, outdoor people and volunteers for a number of good causes. We spend time working as volunteers for non-profit organizations. Both of us are docents at Calaveras Big Trees State Park, lead guided walks summer and winter and help raise money for educational programs. We support the local Habitat for Humanity projects and follow our grandchildren's sports , Scout and school activities.

We will be available if you need us, but invisible if you do not.

We settled in Murphys because it was a perfect fit for us after visiting in the area for almost 30 years, and the weather is near-perfect. Our property came on the market just as we sold our former home in Sacramento, and we decided we were not afraid of the challenge of renovating two houses.

We were really interested in bringing back a historical property where people could live, or visit, in comfort and safety. Affordable housing is in short supply here.

It was great! However a lil' tight for 4 adults. Futon is a double.

The apartment was designed for two adults, with the futon as additional bedding as needed, primarily for children. I'll make sure that is clear in the property description. Thanks

Welcoming place & hosts!

The hosts were friendly & accessible. They've thought of several little things and are open to suggestions for improving an already nice place. Comforts including choices for cooling by AC or ceiling fan, plenty of towels, lots of channels on the TV. The bed was firm and comfortable. It was easy to prepare & serve a couple of meals with the scent of the honeysuckle vines for the dining area backdrop. It was a relaxing and peaceful place that was very conveniently located. Several good restaurants close by in downtown Murphys - close enough to walk there. They supplied locally roasted coffee - a nice touch!

Perfect for a couple

We stayed here just this past weekend and had a great time. My husband and I brought our 2 yr old to play in the little bit of snow up at Big Trees. The only thing that wasn't super kid friendly was the fact that there is no table to eat at. She thought it was great fun to eat breakfast on the floor, but it made for messy mornings, meaning we somehow used all of the MANY towels provided for just a 2-night stay! Having a washer and dryer I think is a more valuable use of that space in the kitchen, so as long as your kiddos are old enough to eat at the coffee table without spilling everywhere it would be fine for families.The location is great, the owners are very friendly and helpful, and it is SO CLEAN!

Excellent, Cozy Cabin in Murphy's!

We truly enjoyed our stay. We are a family of 4 and our kids slept in the futon in the front room, while we slept in the comfy bed in the back room. The kitchen was nicely equipped, with delicious local coffee! The WiFi worked great, the shower/bath was nice, plus Comcast Cable for the kids in the morning. Downtown Murphy's is an easy 2-3 min drive, with all of its shops, restaurants, wine bars and tasty beer pourhouse. If you have kids, don't miss The Moaning Caverns, just 10-15 min drive away. We also got to the snow in just 15 minutes east on Highway 4, where we did some sledding and snowmen building. Overall, just a great family weekend in Murphy's. We highly recommend staying here as your homebase!

Murphys is the center of Calaveras County's wine production, with more than 25 small wineries or wine shops nearby, plus easy access to mountain recreation. We are between Yosemite and Lake Tahoe, about 2 hours in either direction.

Wine tasting, touring and shopping are available year round.

We are close to good golf courses just downhill, mountain scenery uphill, and Yosemite National Park is about two hours South.

Every season is different, and Spring and early summer offer wildflowers along hiking trails and near town. Irish Days and the Frog Jump (county fair) are major Spring events.

Summer is peak season for tourists as people come to enjoy Calaveras Big Trees State Park, Lake Alpine, and hiking the high Sierra. Numerous music venues and festivals are held throughout the summer.

Fall provides easy access to high mountain color.

Winter closes the mountain pass above Murphys, but opens the ski season at Bear Valley. Downhill, cross country, snow shoeing, and snowmobiling are all available.
