About Suzy Taylor

I am an interior designer/magazine editor and worked in NYC for 25 years. I moved to CT in order to have time and space to paint. I moved to SMA in 2007 to put it all together in my gallery which has my paintings and my custom furniture. I started with the gallery and the house next door. I have always designed every aspect of the place which was an interesting challenge in Mexico. I recently decided to go 'up' to get the light and views so divided the property and built the house above the gallery and the guest quarters above that.

Suzy Taylor purchased this apartment in 2005

Why Suzy Taylor chose San Miguel de Allende

When I bought this property it was a vacant lot. I liked the location though admittedly it is better for living than for the gallery since it is a bit off the beaten path. The first level is a gallery and studio. The gallery (named the Arroyo Gallery) contains my original paintings, custom furniture and some clothing. My house is the second level and this unit is the third. The light and views improve as you go further up. It has everything I need all in one space and it is an extremely pleasant place to live!

The area is quiet since it is on a walkway. The view goes to the churches with mainly trees between here and there. The walkway itself is now called the 'Pasada de la Paz' or 'The walkway of peace.' and has gardens, murals, mosaics, etc all along it. but half a block away past this walkway is the major street with taxis, restaurants and shops. The center of town is four blocks away. The Instituto is a block in the other direction. IT's all here and you don't need to drive.

What makes this apartment unique

It is so close to everything but it is quiet. This is a noisy town with fireworks, church bells, traffic, etc. It is not bad here. I get the sound of many singing birds in the early morning. I do get the church bells but they are not close enough to be a bother. They are lovely. The fireworks can be seen but are rarely close enough to be considered noisy. Again, being by an open area, many hot air balloons go overhead in the early morning. You can hear their 'whoosh' and go outside and look up into them.

Since there are only trees between here and the churches, there is no need for curtains. Privacy is not an issue. It is unusual to get a private view and quiet while being close to everything.

With the windows and skylights it does get morning light which I personally adore. (I do provide eyeshades for those who don't love it or have the occasional late night out and want to avoid it the next day.)

Lifepath, a wellness center, is next door and provides health services and classes. The only noise from there is an occasional 'ohmmmmm' from the yoga instructor.

Wonderful apartment

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this penthouse apartment in San Miguel for a week. It was a lovely space and in a great part of town, close to everything. The view is spectacular and we spent our mornings and afternoons drinking coffee or reading on the covered veranda or lounging on the sunny deck. At night we left the door to the veranda open for the cool air. The walkway to the house is beautiful- full of art murals and plants. We enjoyed strolling through every day. Suzy was wonderful to work with and the apartment had everything we needed. If you want to have access to a pool and gym, Rosewood resort, a short walk away, has one month memberships that give you access to all their facilities including their gorgeous pool for about $2,950-$4,100 MXN (about $150-$200 based on current exchange). Next time we will stay with Suzy and buy a couple of these memberships.

San Miguel is a magical place and was even better than we expected. Staying in this lovely apartment was a large part of that fantastic experience. We will definitely be back.

Lovely modern space w/ a view and private patio on a quiet street.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay with Suzy. She has opened up the top floor of her home/property/gallery for guests who are looking for a private home experience that is charming and has uninterrupted views of the churches in downtown San Miguel.

Suzy has thought of everything. There is a well stocked tiny kitchen, lots of fluffy new towels, and a TV (which we never turned on). The closet even has plenty of good hangers, a small umbrella and 2 fluffy robes to use.

We especially loved our amazing view and private patio with lovely potted plants and lounge chairs to enjoy. We could see the sunrise over the hill and watch any rain clouds roll in.

Everything is within walking distance of this property. And we discovered lots of great restaurants all just steps from the end of the street. Anytime we went into town, we knew Suzy's property was going to be a quick 10 minute walk downhill home.

We ran into Suzy one day on our way out to dinner. We discussed the weather and she kindly loaded us her umbrella. Very sweet!

I would recommend this property to couples who want to get away from it all but be close enough to everything!

Thank you Suzy for opening up your little slice of heaven with us! I look forward to visiting your gallery again in October with girlfriends.

The host was very helpful . Excellent restaurant recommendations. The view from the terrace is spectacular. You can see two of the cathedrals. Nice place to stay and great place to relax.

Great outdoor spaces with view

  • 4 of 5

We chose this place as we wanted to be able to relax outside in the nice SMA weather. The private outdoor spaces were great, a large covered patio with fan, and also another area partially under the shade of a tree, both with nice views of the main church. Interior space was small for two people, though just as pictured, with one tiny closet, and a mini kitchen perfect for morning coffee and storing cool drinks. The building is finished with high quality fixtures, and the towels/sheets and drapes were also surprisingly high quality. The double bed was super comfortable, not hard. I was worried the location was a bit far out, but really, SMA is so small it was fine, and only about a block from the Rosewood. And on a small pedestrian alley, so fairly quiet. A nice choice in SMA if you value outdoor spaces!!

Owner's Response: Thank you. Yes it is small but given the lack of the extra star I feel the need to add a bit. As stated what is shown in the photos is accurate and I do not pretend it is a large interior space. I tend to think of the space as the ultimate hotel room. Not many hotel rooms have the view, the private covered and open terraces and a kitchen. I do not recommend it for couples for over 10 days. At that point you'd probably want a house or apartment, not a hotel. It tends to be fine for singles. The kitchen is not for serious cooking but it does have an under-counter refrigerator, a microwave, 2 burner hotplate and utensils. Most of these don't show in the photo. It's not for real cooking but great for drinks and snacks, coffee and breakfast and reheating the inevitable leftovers from the great restaurants nearby. The bed is a queen, not a double. Yes, it s very near the Rosewood where the smallest room (no view, terraces or kitchen) costs more than twice as much.

A lovely penthouse tucked in a quiet corner

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in SMA. Suzy's penthouse is a beautiful space with a lovely terrace which was a wonderful place to retreat to. Close to the centro it was very quiet as it is located off a pedestrian alleyway. The view over the city gave the penthouse an amazing feeling of space. Suzy gave the perfect amount of attentiveness.

Great Place and Location

  • 5 of 5

This is our second time back to San Miguel and our first time staying here. I would definitely recommend staying here for a number of reasons! Suzy, the owner is fabulous to work with and the studio apartment was perfect. Also, the location is great and we were able to walk throughout the city of San Miguel. The rooftop patio offers both a covered and uncovered area with great views, which we took full advantage of! The only thing to keep in mind is that the apartment doesn't have an iron and ironing board. Suzy, however, was quick to offer hers if I needed it. We will definitely stay here again!
