Charming but deceiving

  • 3 of 5

We rented this house for a long weekend with family to visit Thomas and The Tweetsie Railroad. Upon first glance the house is a super cute traditional cabin on the side of a mountain overlooking a beautiful river but we soon realized the house was not up to our expectations. The home had not been deep cleaned in a while almost like it had been shut up for the winter and not spring cleaned. Bugs, spiders, and spider webs were everywhere as well as huge dust bunnies on the floor and the walls. The refrigerator had defrosted and a large semi frozen puddle of water was in the bottom of it under the drawers. One of the twin beds did not have clean sheets. We found towels in the cabinet that were put away dirty. The chair in the upstairs bathroom only has a cushion and not a base, so when you sit on it, you will fall through. The bed coverings and some of the sheets were stained and need to be replaced. The half bath toilet had a brown ring in the bowl...disgusting to our three year old potty training toddlers. The house is listed as air conditioned but for the three level house, there's only one small window unit, and it's on the top floor. The main floor and bottom (basement) are much warmer. While cooking dinner, my husband and I were sweating profusely and this made dinner and anything afterwards very uncomfortable. When we used the waster and dryer in the basement, it made the bottom level a lot warmer as well. We had the windows open and every fan running but at times, the temperature in the house was miserable. Not all the windows could be opened, and most of them were covered with more bugs and spider webs. The accessibility to the river is difficult. If you have any mobility impairment issues, it's impossible. The hot tub was not working. No hammock was available. On the main walking path, we found a broken glass from the kitchen on one of the decks. It had shattered everywhere. Many light bulbs needed to be replaced. The basement level outside seating needs to be replaced. The cushions have huge holes in them and are not able to be used.

The house is so cute and the area is beautiful but the lack of cleanliness was a major disappointment. The house needs attention to the things that renters use a lot. If these areas were fixed, this home would be absolutely perfect!

Quant, cozy cabin. Lovely creekside mountain setting.

  • 3 of 5

Nice cabin. We enjoyed our stay. Easy to get to and close to grocery shopping and stores. Nice back porch to enjoy the view of the creek. Our cell phones did not work and there was no phone line in the cabin. Other reviewers reported no cell service as well. I think they should put in a land line with local service for safety. The cabin was comfortable overall, but the mattress and pillows on the main floor were worn out.

Beautiful Cabin despite all the rain!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for an alternative place to stay, other than a hotel, while visiting our daughter who attends Appalachian State University. With her graduating in May, we were also hoping to find someplace larger to stay for the entire family for the big event. The High C's Cabin was a perfect fit! A quaint cabin with a lovely cozy feeling for just the husband and me for the weekend and yet three levels with lots of room for 6-8 people. A perfect fit for both occasions! The views from the back decks were amazing, even with the relentless rain we endured for the entire weekend. It has a galley kitchen with plenty of amenities - we baked a cake while we were there! Nice to have cable television and the propane fireplace quickly took the chill out of the air. The bed was comfy and the shower was amazing! We were unable to get any cell phone service and there is no internet. Was a bit of a concern since there is no land-line either so no way to contact emergency services. Even our emergency 911 did not always show up on our cell phones.

Lovely cabin! We will be making reservations for May's graduation and for any future trips to Boone!
