Overview

About the property

850 sq.ft English Basement Studio-Separate Eat In Kitchen-Bathroom With BathTub

Large, spacious English Basement Studio with open floor is part of the Capital Hill Historic District and one of DC's great neighborhoods Close to everything. Get anywhere in the city with ease -- only one block from Union Station (Red Line Metro stop). Only 4 to 5 blocks from the Capitol Building, Supreme Court, and Library of Congress. A beautiful tree-lined walk past decorative water fountains is all that separates you from all the museums, monuments and memorials on the National Mall.

You will be amazed with the convenience and elegance of Union Station and its Red Line Metro stop. The Red Line is the main backbone of the DC Metro -- connecting to all of the other lines -- so the entire metro area is just minutes away -- pop over to Gallery Place/China Town, Metro Center, Dupont Circle, the National Zoo, or Foggy Bottom without the hassle of traffic or parking. If you are looking for a taxi, there is always a line of them waiting in front of Union Station. You can also catch many of the tour buses and the famous amphibious duck tours at Union Station as well. If you want to get around by bicycle, there is also a Capital Bike Share station at Union Station — great for getting around on the mall — ride them to the White House or the Washington, Lincoln, and Jefferson Monuments.

Just around the corner from the house is the world's best bagel shop (no better sandwiches anywhere) and several other great neighborhood restaurants with outside seating along Massachusetts Avenue. Ask for Milton at La Loma -- the best margaritas around -- relaxing under shade umbrellas is one of the best ways to pass an afternoon or evening. We are also conveniently located to Eastern Market and all the shops and restaurants along Pennsylvania Avenue and 8th Street SE (about 1 mile away). We are even closer (just a few blocks) to one of the hottest growing areas in all of DC: the H Street Corridor with all of its great restaurants, bars, and boutique shopping.

If you want to get your own groceries and cook, there is a brand new Giant grocery store that just opened up 3 blocks away.

The kitchen is a full-size eat-in kitchen that is a separate room from the living area. The kitchen has granite countertops, a full-size sink, and full-size appliances (not the mini versions found in many studio and basement units), including a dishwasher. The kitchen has a table that comfortably sits four.

The living area is a large open space that is carpeted. Half of the space is a nice sized living room and the other half is the bedroom area. In the sleeping area there is a queen size bed, full closet and dressers for clothes and storage. There is a sitting area next to the window near the bed that has a nice desk if you need to do work or be on the computer.

The other half of the open space is the living room, which has a large comfortable futon, a couple nice chairs, and the TV. There is a bay window off of the living area that faces toward the street. The futon can be folded down to comfortably sleep 2 more people (in addition to the queen bed).

NOTE: If you are interested in a larger space or additional space, please see the listing for the main part of the row house (VRBO listing #575404).

There is a full size bathroom with tub and shower. Unfortunately the studio does not have a clothes washer or dryer. There is a dry-cleaner with laundry service two blocks away.

We have wifi internet and the TV has the DirecTV expanded package with HBO and Showtime -- parental controls available). The TV is also connected to the internet for easy ordering of NetFlix movies.

Finally, we are very conveniently located for travelers coming in and out of the city. Washington National Airport is less than 3 miles away (15-20 minutes in good traffic) or you can take Metro from Union Station to National Airport. We are, of course, super convenient for anyone traveling by train — trains depart Union Station almost every hour for destinations up and down the east coast — catch a train and be in Manhattan in less than 4 hours (2 hours if you take the express Acela train) -- go catch a Broadway show!

Whatever your interest, whatever your need, we are confident you will feel at home while enjoying your vacation or tending to business in the nation's capital.

Excellent location, great accomodations!

Folks, this is the ONLY way to do DC! We had initially explored staying at a decent hotel in Alexandria, Fairfax, etc and just hopping the train each day to DC for our family trip. When we determined that that degree of reliance on public transportation was not for us, we discovered this place on VRBO. We could not have been happier! A short 1-block walk to Union Station, and jumping onto the $1/pp Circulator bus to all the major spots along the Mall was super easy. My wife and I and our 4 kids (9, 8, 5, and 18 mo) easily walked to the Capitol and back one day as well. There are shops and restaurants nearby, and the neighborhood feel is so cool. You are literally living like a local for the time you are there! I found a cheap ($12/day) surface lot to park in about 4 blocks away, and we didn't use the car at all while we were in town. The apartment itself was very comfy, bed, pull-out bed, and futon slept all of us very comfortably. Kitchen was well apportioned, as we fixed all dinners at the apartment. No noise concerns from the house upstairs, plenty of hot water for showers, lots of linens, plush towels, etc. Very clean as well. We could not have asked for a better place to stay for our DC trip. Hope it's available the next time we look to head to DC.

Excellent location and amenities; had a great time!

  • 4 of 5

Went with my Dad and nephew on a weekend sightseeing trip to DC, and this location was perfect for the three of us. It's just a five minute walk to Union Station, came with a fully equipped kitchen, and had enough space for everyone (queen bed and futon bed, and single trundle bed that pulled out from under the Queen bed). The TV had Direct TV with lots of channels (Netflix was listed on the property listing but I don't think it was actually available, or at least I couldn't find it). You do occasionally hear footsteps from the guests staying upstairs, but it wasn't annoying (they could probably hear us laughing from watching episodes of VEEP). There was a brief issue when 4pm of check-in day arrived and I hadn't yet received the unlock code via email, but when I called the owner she was very quick to return my call to make sure I received the email as an attachment through the VRBO app. Apparently it was an issue with a change that had been made recently to the website. Since we didn't arrive to the house until late that night, it wasn't an issue since I still ended up with the unlock code before we got there.

The only suggestions I would make is that the bathroom could use an upgrade to the tub/shower/toilet, and the toilet paper holder was attached loosely to the wall (we tried to tighten it while there but didn't have any screwdrivers). There is also some slight wear to the carpet between the living area and kitchen.

But overall, this is definitely a great value for the money while you are in DC. I would absolutely stay there again.

Special thanks to Nevena for making sure everything went smoothly.

Highly recommended!

Very cute place. Extremely convenient to Union Station and from there everywhere in DC area!

  • 4 of 5

A few issues with bugs and the TV did not work with internet as described. Apparently there was an issue with an update of the website for the owner so we did not receive our "welcome" letter until our second night and had to get the lock code from the nearby manager when we arrived. Otherwise it was lovely and I would stay there again!

Great Location; Basement Apartment in Row House

  • 3 of 5

This is a great location if you are coming into Union Station (train). This is a value-friendly rental. The beds were futons and reasonably comfortable. The bathroom could use a tune up. There was mold on the shower curtain. It has air conditioning for the summer, which works well. It doesn't have a washer/dryer and we could not find a laundry within walking distance. We received clear directions on how to access the property, and it was ready for us before the promised time. Our security deposit was promptly returned.
