About the property

Lovely in-law apartment that sleeps 2 is located in the big, serene backyard behind my home in north Berkeley's exclusive and beautiful tree-lined 'Gourmet Ghetto' neighborhood, within easy walking distance to downtown Berkeley, just 4 blocks to the University of California campus, and a quick 20-minute drive to downtown San Francisco. Best neighborhood in north Berkeley.

This quiet in-law apartment has no steps, and is within easy walking distance of the famous Berkeley Rose Garden, a vast array of wonderful restaurants (including world-renowned Chez Panisse; the very popular Cheese Board pizzeria; Asian, European, Indian, Mexican, and other international cuisine; delicatessens; cafes and coffee shops), grocery shopping, the Berkeley Farmer's Market, banking, post office...and more!

Downtown Berkeley is an easy 10-minute walk, and just several minutes by car or bicycle. Public transportation is convenient and abundant, with Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Downtown Berkeley station just 0.9 miles away and AC Transit bus lines nearby; for example, the 65 can take you from the Downtown Berkeley Bart at Center St. and Shattuck to Oxford and Cedar Streets, just 2 blocks away (.23 miles); and the 67 bus takes you from there to Euclid and Cedar, just 1 block away (.09 miles).

For long-term stays, guests are welcome to wash and dry their bedding in the laundry room so they always can sleep on clean sheets.

In line with price

  • 2 of 5

A few quick notes on the place that may help people decide:

-Compared to the rest of what's available, this space provides you with a kitchen and a bathroom at a reasonable price.

-Though it states that it sleeps 4, i don't see how it can accommodate more than 3 people unless you get really cuddly.

-It's at a short walking distance to gourmet ghetto, a bit further from bart and the cal campus though still walkable.

-The place does smell moldy. Especially after you take a shower, the smell is more prominent. If you every stop by the kitchen in the main house to grab a complimentary breakfast, you may notice this smell in the living room of the house as well.

-It would have been nice to enjoy the backyard with a drink if it was well taken care of.

-Gregory was responsive, nice and courteous throughout the process.

Close to everything in Berkeley!

  • 4 of 5

Place was in a very nice location! Gregory was there to meet us and showed us the property. The apartment was under the main house and could use some updating. The apartment was pretty dark with only a few Windows. The bed was clean, but very small, We have a queen at home and this was much smaller. Being underneath the house, you could hear everything going on upstairs. Every time the toilet flushes or people were walking around, you could hear it. Berkeley is a very expensive city, and this place was very reasonable. We walked to the Greek theatre on campus and back with no problems! It was very nice to experience all the shops and restaurants within walking distance. This is not a luxury apartment, but a great place to lay your head while experiencing Berkeley. We would return again.

Funcky Fun Apartment

  • 5 of 5

Wow, location, location, location! Within walking distance to UCB football stadium and same of the best restaurants in Berkeley. Gregory is a wonderful host, he gave us lots of great information. The kitchen is one of the best equipped we have come across. We loved the outdoor table under the trees. This is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine. There also is a great upstairs patio that has views of the city. We plan to stay here again in two years. The funky fun apartment is the best places we have ever stayed in Berkeley.

apartment near UC Berkeley

  • 3 of 5

Gregory was very helpful w information and getting back to us prior to arriving. Our schedules never meshed so we never met him. My wife and I stayed in the apartment beneath the main house, not the detached apartment. Next time we'll make sure to stay in the detached unit as we could hear a lot of activities going on upstairs,...and they get rolling early! All in all a great place to base out of, good value/ price, walking distance to the campus, town, etc. Be nice if they improved the outdoor patio/ hang out spaces... being a landscape architect, I might be a little more focused on those things than others!

great location for Berkeley

  • 3 of 5

This was a nice place in a great location. Gregory met us at the flat. He was still cleaning up. First the bad things. In all honesty, he could have done a better clean up job. Dishes still in the drainer in the small kitchen, floor not as clean as one would like, bathroom a little dingy. The water pressure was "ok" but not terrific. Not enough wine glasses or water glasses. No cork screw. Fridge noisy all night. The place is a little dark since it is in the trees so not very welcoming for spending a lot of time or working. The good things. Location is great. Right in the gourmet ghetto so great places to eat. Walking distance to Berkeley so good there. Bed was comfortable. Sheets were nice. Towels adequate. WiFi was excellent. Access to washer/dryer, so great. Some nibbles for brekky available but we didn't take advantage of those. There were a million TV channels but I never turned the thing on. A nice little outside deck with a BBQ. I didn't use the BBQ but it was reasonably clean and with the great shops a nice steak would have gone down well. There was access to another larger deck that is part of the main house and gets a lot of sun. PArking available on the long driveway but backing out would have been a nightmare. PArking on the street until 8:00 AM weekdays and all day on the weekends. The price was very reasonable and so I can't really complain too much. I would probably return, for no more than 2-3 days. Any longer and I would have to find a place that was more comfortable to work in and had more sunlight coming in.

Lovely and well equipped place to stay

  • 4 of 5

I spent 3 nights in this lovely in-law apartment. The apartment is very clean and well equipped. The bed is also clean and comfortable. I like the surrounding environment a lot. It is safe and easy to get to UCB. I enjoyed my walking to the Bart. It took me about 15 - 20 minutes. The host Gregory is a very nice and friendly person. Whenever I txted him a question or asked him on the phone, he always replied me with helpful detail. Also this apartment is detached from the house and I had lots of privacy. I enjoyed my staying and I am sure I will come again on my next visit !

Notes:
We are located in the Berkeley Hills--the safest and most affluent neighborhood in Berkeley, a neighborhood in which the average household income is over $100,000 per year, compared to just $57,000 per year for Gourmet Ghetto neighborhood, for example; yet we are just 0.3 miles from UC Berkeley, 0.3 miles from the shuttle bus to MSRI and Lawrence Berkeley Labs, 0.3 miles from the Gourmet Ghetto, 0.3 miles from Andronico's store for organic food, 0.4 miles from the Safeway store for food, 0.5 miles from the Berkeley Hills Rose Garden, 0.9 miles from the Downtown Berkeley BART station, 1 mile from the North Berkeley BART station, and 13 miles from Downtown San Francisco. Some of the other listings in the Berkeley Hills are much farther from everything, so our location is very convenient for you.
