Overview

About the property

A Private Cottage with spacious 1 bedroom, 1 bath with Fireplace and Courtyard

If you are tried of staying in the apartment style vacation rental and want a private retreat in a quiet genteel neighborhood with Walk Score of 90, you have found it! It is perfect for short term rentals and month long stays for visitors, corporate and business travelers and out patients to any of our medical facilities. Bus stop is 1/2 block away.

Le Bijou truly offers its guests the best in a private retreat in the City located just steps from the hustle and bustle of downtown Seattle, Chihuli's Glass Museum, MoPop (formerly EMP), Space Needle, Pike's Market, Amazon, The Gates Foundation, Space Needle, Cancer Research Center, Fred Hutch and more.

This beautifully kept jewel is located on historic Queen Anne Hill, the only neighborhood in walking distance of the City, has lots of local pubs, restaurants, bar, bakery and boutiques.

THE SPACE

'Le Bijou' of Queen Anne (The Jewel of Queen Anne) is a 1909 Craftsman-style cottage located on the western bluff facing Puget Sound It has its own entry and sits overlooking a courtyard. Restored to perfection to preserve the Arts & Crafts details of the early 20th century, this home features charming crown molding and wainscoting, as well as lathe and plaster ceilings. The walls and original old growth fir floors were lovingly and meticulously repaired and given new life.

~Le Bijou is completely equipped with all the modern conveniences and luxuries one would hope to find in totally up-to-date accommodations in the city . . . yet it’s nestled in a private, quiet, intimate Queen Anne neighborhood.

~The living room retains its original architectural elements, with the addition of a gas fireplace to take the chill out of the evening air. A beautiful antique cherry mantel with marble surround is a focal point of the living room.

~Do you long for a truly decadent night’s sleep in a fabulous bed? Well, we’ve provided for that, too. Through French doors, you will find the master bedroom, where you’ll embark on what very well may be the best night’s sleep you’ve ever had. We have personally researched and selected luxury, earth-friendly mattresses that can be adjusted for you and your sleeping partner’s unique comfort preferences. Our mattress covers, deluxe mattress toppers, and pillows have also been carefully vetted and chosen, in partnership with a seasoned bedding expert, for your total comfort. We’re confident you won’t go "Sleepless in Seattle".

There is additional queen-sized bed in the living room. This sofa/hide-a-bed, made by American Leather, is the finest, most comfortable convertible bed made. It is NOT your typical hide-a-bed. Of course, the linens are all selected specifically for your comfort with their perfect weight, drape, and breathability, and always freshly ironed for your arrival.

~ The kitchen has everything a cook could want: handsome original cabinetry, plus a farmer's cast iron apron sink, exquisite tile work, and a granite table with 2 whimsical chairs that remind your host of 'Alice in Wonderland' and the Red Queen at tea in the garden.

~The bathroom is well stocked with everything to pamper you: heated floors, a restored claw foot cast iron soaking tub, 48" granite-topped vanity with ample drawer space for longer stays, and a graciously sized shower. Turkish towels of the highest quality are provided for you, as well as top of the line, spa quality cleansing products. For stays longer than 7 days, fresh linens and towels will be provided.

If you need a larger more spacious home, I own the home next door called he Bluffs. It is a 2 bedroom, 1 bath home. You can see it at VRBO.com/818886

GUEST ACCESS

'Le Bijou' is completely separated from the main house on the property and totally self-sufficient, as if you were staying in your own residence. You’ll enter the brick courtyard along a bricked garden path, past a unique garden cultivated at the front of the property. You’ll be welcomed into the courtyard with perennial and annual flowers comprising a lush garden atmosphere. You can barbecue your catch of the day and spend the afternoon in comfortable seating enjoying the sunshine or sitting around the fire pit. Or you might while away an afternoon or evening relaxing, barbecuing, conversing around a fire in the evening, dining by moonlight, and enjoying the magnificent views from the bluff and Puget Sound.

INTERACTION WITH GUESTS

A lockbox is provided for guests for convenient daytime or nighttime access. It is opposite the front door on the porch vertical post with a flashlight for additional light at night.

Your host lives in the main home on the property and is available to answer questions, provide information, or find what might be missing from the kitchen, or anything else you may need.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

West Queen Anne is on the bluff overlooking Puget Sound, West Seattle, the Olympic Range and Cruise Ship Terminal. The immediate area is easily accessible to the Theater District, Seattle Center/Space Needle, shopping, fine and casual dining, and boutique bars and pubs in upper and lower Queen Anne, artisanal bakeries, quaint shops, Pike Place Market, SAM (Seattle Art Museum), many university level educational facilities, and more. All major hospitals — Virginia Mason Hospital, Swedish Medical Center, Group Health Hospital, Harborview Medical Center, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute, and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation — are within 10 to 15 minutes. You’ll find Queen Anne to be an artistically thought out, calm, peaceful haven within the heart of the city's hustle and bustle.

GETTING AROUND

'Le Bijou' of Queen Anne is located one-half block from the bus stop and within easy walking distance of Lower and Upper Queen Anne and all of Seattle's many attractions, while providing the ultimate privacy and comfort in a beautiful setting. For longer distances, a car is recommended.

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE

Location and accommodations are ideal for visitors, vacationers, and executives. It’s also ideal for individuals traveling to Seattle for medical care, being in close proximity to hospitals and medical research centers.

About Debera Reiley

~ It’s me, Debera, your host. Perhaps you’d like to know a bit about me before you become a guest on of one of my properties. I would certainly want to know who I am renting from away from home if not a hotel.

~ Just a few tidbits: I was raised in Tucson, Arizona and attended NAU and UAA. Lived in central Texas for a couple years, taught school for awhile and then got the wanderlust. I had never seen much except the desert and hot and dry. As a youngster, I’d dream about really high magnificent mountains and the ocean and always travel (read those books with a flashlight at night in bed under the covers). As a high school student I saw photos of New Zealand and its green green landscape and glaciers.

~ Bingo: I started for New Zealand by way of Canada and Alaska in a VW Westfalia. (I know a strange routing but why not? Upon arriving in Alaska, I took one look at the mountains cascading into Turnagain Arm and that was it. I was hooked. Alaska became my home for 30 years. Hiking, skiing, sailing and raising children filled those years along with foreign travel in winter(typical Hawaii for Alaskans, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, Middle East (by accident)and Africa. If you don’t get out of Alaska in winter, cabin fever will set in.

~ Another Bingo…what to do next: I was raised with Latin as a language choice(impossible to speak) and always wanted to speak a foreign language. New chapter: I took my precious dog, Oliver Twist, and moved to France in 2004, went to a language institute, studied harder than I ever remember, hiked, skied , sailed across the Mediterranean Sea, road motorcycles with my dog, parasailed, sailplaned….Oh my goodness, it was a fabulous year and a half. Why do all wonderful things have to come to an end?

~ Another chapter on the way. I didn’t have a plan coming back from Europe except I didn’t think long dark winters were what was right for me. I stopped in Seattle to see friends and here I am.

Why Debera Reiley chose Seattle

\When I found this place at the end of 2013, it was run down, everything overgrown, little to no maintenance in years, complete renovation of everything was needed. I saw the possibilities, liked the neighborhood, the bluff and sunsets, a place to garden, a place of tranquility and LOTS of work. Four year later, I am still working on it and will be for probably years to come. I like the process of dreaming the impossible and making the dream come true. I love the cottage. I will go over there when there are no quests and feel like I have gone on vacation. I thoroughly enjoy the setting on the West Bluff looking out to Puget Sound with the marine traffic coming and going. The street is tree lined and quiet, not something I experienced in lower Queen Anne. The property offered me a place to live and make a home plus this darling cottage that I have lovingly restored to its former beauty and given it my own twist of creativity. Then, the opportunity to garden again did the trick for me. I love this location as I am so close to everything mentioned before but feel like I am not in the city. I can take what I want in the city and then retreat to my little haven on Queen Anne. There is a tranquility about living here that is very special to me.

What makes this cottage unique

'Le Bijou', (The Jewel), is a separate beautiful space. It is not living in someones home, or a condo/apartment. It is 15 to 20 minutes from everything from entertainment, hospitals, research centers, technology research, universities but right in the city. Le Bijou's location is Queen Anne and on the west bluff with expansive views of Puget Sound, fabulous sunsets and sunrises is my idea of perfect. My street is quiet with great neighbors who are friendly and all seem to have dogs...love the doggies. It is a place of calmness and tranquility but accessible to whatever it is that pleases you. Coming home is like ....well, really coming home.

Being a host has been very important to the quality of my life. I meet interesting people from all over the world who are looking to Seattle as a place to explore, adventure, visit families, conduct business, try out new experiences. I hope to add a special experience and a personal touch for each guest while staying in Le Bijou . It is fun and rewarding for me to see guests really enjoy and experience fully their vacation and visit.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Debera- It was great to see you and as usual your hospitality was overwhelming. Sorry we were on such a tight schedule. We will definitely be back to visit on a more casual note in the not distant future. We have come to really enjoy seattle. Mitch

All the comforts of home

  • 5 of 5

My family and I have stayed at many VRBO properties and this was one of the most enjoyable. The location is perfect to explore all that Seattle has to offer. The immediate neighborhood is exquisite, gorgeous homes and meandering streets perfect for an evening stroll. The water view directly across from the property is perfect for watching the sun set. The house itself has many seating areas for comfort and conversation. The beds, including the sofa bed, are very comfortable and the linens are fabulous. We especially enjoyed the claw foot bathtub, and the gas fireplace. We would not hesitate to stay at Debera's "Le Bijou" again and could easily live there full time, it was that comfortable. Debera is a most gracious host, always available, never intrusive. Should our travels bring us back to the Pacific Northwest, "Le Bijou" would happily be our base camp once again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the wonderful review with all of the details that you liked in the neighborhood, about Le Bijou and what I have tried to create here for the enjoyment of others. Meeting you and your lovely children (young adults) was a treat to see how seamlessly you communicated and worked together whether adventuring or getting Nora to her appointments. I do hope she lands the job here...then you would be coming back to Seattle. My best to you and the children.

Wonderful Craftsman Retreat in the City

  • 5 of 5

Le Bijou was a wonderful, peaceful craftsman retreat within the city! Debra has beautifully restored this 1909 cottage to a comfortable retreat to come to at the end of a busy day or even stay in for the day. One block away from the bus route that takes you to all the activities in the city you might want to enjoy. Debra is a most helpful yet respectful host and so knowledgeable about the area. She even gave us glasses to watch the eclipse. We definitely will be staying here again when we come back to Seattle. Thank you for sharing it with us. Todd and Cindy

Relaxed, felt like home.

  • 5 of 5

Debera has created a wonderful little oasis for the traveler. I would highly recommend her place. One block off the #1 Bus route, this is a big plus! You will be in downtown Seattle in 20 minutes and we had our small dog with us, she was a trooper. You don't have to rent a car if you use Uber/Lyft or the light rail/bus line.

Cons: If you can't handle any stairs please look elsewhere, it's just the nature of the area. No dishwasher or washer/dryer, no room for these appliances, this is not a deal breaker for most travelers. We are in our fifties and just loved the vibe and the beautiful landscaping around Debera's home and cottage. If you want the view of the water you will have to walk across the street but this is not a hardship, just carry your wine glass with you.

Owner's Response: John and Janet were lovely guests at Le Bijou escaping the heat of Texas. To clarify the stairs, there are 7 steps to enter Le Bijou if parking in private parking immediately next to Le Bijou. There are 7 steps to enter the property from the street. I think that they are referring to the Queen Anne Stairways walks which are the remnants of the late 1800's cable car stairways that are all over Queen Anne hill. Yes this area has a lot of walking and hills which is why it is so lovely and gives so many beautiful views of Puget Sound and allows visitors the opportunity to see the old Victorian homes, sort of peeking to the past the way it used to be, from the stairway before cars and roads were available.

Perfect Family Reunion

  • 5 of 5

This past week, my family and I rented both the“LeBijou” and “The Bluffs” facilities. It was a long-planned reunion with my son's family and a doting grandpa. The two rentals made for a wonderful experience. The facilities and our host's attention to every detail and amenity were superb. The views of the harbor and the Queen Anne neighborhood experience were ideal. All of us had a fine time. Think I'll recommend this rental to the rest of my clan.

Owner's Response: Hosting this family in both Le Bijou and The Bluffs was a delightful experience. They used both yards and the picnic table and fire pit at The Bluffs to have family gatherings and meals. Loved watching them just sitting under the umbrella/fire pit area during the middle of the day with grandpa talking to his young grandsons about life and living. Great multi generational family experience to host and witness.

Owner's Response: Lovely to have had Phil and Beth as guests who were in Seattle to celebrate their daughter receiving her hard earned PHD. They enjoyed the courtyard and surrounding gardens after going all day long in Seattle. They have been to Seattle before and knew their way around along with planning parties for the graduate. Definitely fun to be on the sidelines enjoying all of the enthusiasm. I hope you will visit again in the future for pure pleasure.

Amazing Gem in Queen Anne

  • 5 of 5

This property is amazing. It is beautifully decorated, historic, warm, and incredibly comfortable. Every detail is taken care of and it felt like staying in a 5 star resort, (especially the linens). The thing that made it such an exceptional experience besides the location and ambience was the host. Deborah was so warm and inviting. It felt like you were visiting a new city with a old friend. We loved it and will come back both to Seattle and to see Deborah. Thanks for making it such a great stay!
