About the property

Private Beachfront Home 15 Km South Of Mahahual With Breathtaking 360 Views

If you've ever wanted to play Robinson Crusoe or Swiss Family Robinson, but still have communication with the rest of the world at your fingertips, Casa de Cocos is the vacation home you've been dreaming of. Located 15 Kilometers south of the picturesque village of Mahahual, our home is the last home on the beach road to Xcalak and sits way out of view of any other homes. You will have the beach and our slice of the ocean to yourself, but if you get lonely, neighbors are just a short walk away. We also have an on-sight caretaker that you'll hardly even know is around until you need him. The home has high speed internet and cell service for all of your communication needs. Casa de Coco's living quarters are on the second floor which allows for cool ocean breezes and spectacular views. A second story balcony runs the entire front of the house for great ocean views, but if that's not enough you can take the interior stairs to the rooftop where you can view the sunset and watch the stars come out at night. The kitchen/dining/living area are an open design. The master bedroom has a king size bed and private full bath. It also has sliding glass doors that open onto the main balcony. The second bedroom has two twin beds that could be pushed together to make a double. The large main bathroom is conveniently located directly across from the second bedroom.

Downstairs is the caretakers quarters and storage. Another verandah runs along the front of the house at ground level. There is plenty of space for some alone time.

Then there's the beach! You can walk out into the ocean forever on the soft sand. There is no grass or rocks, just sand. However, please remember that the sea is a temperamental sculptress and the beach is her ever-changing masterpiece. The only thing we can guarantee is that we will keep our portion of beach as accessible and clean as mere humans can.

The house is located across the beach road from the beach, but the beach is part of the property. The traffic on the beach road is minimal, less than 6 cars a day, and will not interfere at all with your enjoyment of the beach.

Casa de Coco is off the grid in more ways than one. There are no municipal services to the property but it is serviced by an efficient and effective power system of solar panes and wind generator. We require that our guests adopt a 'beach bum' attitude and leave the high wattage blow dryers at home. There is also no air conditioning but we think that you'll find the ocean breezes more than adequate. Although you will have more than enough water and electricity available, we do ask that you be mindful, not wasteful. Please be kind to the planet and our energy system, all of will reap the benefits.

Casa de Coco's remoteness is a huge part of her charm. You will want to prepare for your stay here by stopping in Playa del Carmen or Tulum to stock up on groceries and supplies for your stay here. can live like a local and plan your menu according to what is available at the fish market, produce stand, and tiendas in the village of Mahahual. The closest restaurant is 5 minutes away and there are several restaurants and bars strung along the beach road, you can bar-hop your way into town and back again.

Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson learned to get along with the creatures of the jungle, and, here at Casa de Coco, you'll be given that opportunity too. They were here first and we consider ourselves lucky to get to hang out in their backyard for a little while. There are ways to limit their numbers and keep most of them outside where they belong, but you will probably make the acquaintance of a few. Wear insect repellant and shake your shoes out before you put them on and you'll be just fine. To enjoy the beauty of fireflies lighting the jungle night and the songs of tropical birds in the morning, you gotta learn to put up with some of their ugly cousins.

About Mary Reid

We are old sailors that washed ashore on the Yucatan Peninsula after 12 years of living on a sailboat. In 2009 we bought a house on the Gulf of Mexico in the fishing village of Chelem, but we missed the Caribbean so when we saw Casa de Coco for sale we jumped at the opportunity.

Mary Reid purchased this house in 2014

Why Mary Reid chose El Placer

Ahhh...Mahahual and Ahhh...the magnificent Caribbean water. Nuff said.

What makes this house unique

Casa de Coco really is away from it all. We hope it stays that way, but we can't guarantee it. So you better hurry down before everyone else finds out about it.

Peaceful and beautiful

  • 5 of 5

Casa de Coco was perfect for us. It is situated on a beautiful piece of the coast with palm trees and ocean right there and very few people around. The house was immaculately clean, easy to be in, really comfortable and had everything that you could want for. The deck was perfect for the whole day, and the sea breeze up there kept any bugs away. It was an easy drive to both Mahahual and Xcalar and a fun and interesting drive to see some of the most beautiful ruins near Chetumal that we pretty much had to ourselves. Mary was wonderful about getting instructions to us, getting excited with us about our up coming trip and then checking in with us while we were there. The caretaker looked after all of the off the grid systems and made sure that we had all that we needed. If you are looking for peace and quiet, off the beaten track, then this is the perfect location and a wonderful place to call home for as long as you can!

Welcoming Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This lovely house has its own beach, and considerate and helpful caretaker. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here off the beaten track. It is surrounded by nature, with great views to the sea and jungle. For those in search of more civilisation, Mahahual was a short 30 minute drive. I just wish we had had more time to enjoy it all!

Nice, well equipped house south of Mahahual

  • 4 of 5

We recently stayed for 4 nights at this property. It is clean, well kept and well equipped and I cannot say enough good things about Mary (the property owner) and Josue, Isabel and their son Gabriel (who live in the apartment below). Communication from Mary was outstanding (print the directions she sends you!) and she was also extremely flexible - we were forced to make a last minute change to our dates and Mary was very understanding and accommodating. Josue and Isabel are lovely - they are very unobtrusive but there if ever you need them.

The property itself is about 30 minutes drive from Mahahual. When we were there it was extremely windy and the stretch of shore in front of this property is not protected by reef. This meant two things:

1. The sea was too rough to go kayaking. This was a real shame as it was one of the reasons we chose this property.

2. Lack of reef means that this is where the trash washes up :-(. The stretch of beach in front of the property was immaculate but on either side (where there are no properties) there were just piles and piles of plastic. It was a shocking reminder of how much trash we throw into the ocean.

Obviously, neither of these factors are within the owner's control but did detract from what could have been an idyllic getaway.

Casa de Coco is the perfect spot for a romantic vacation away from it all. The house is comfortable and well equipped and the caretakers are there when needed and invisible otherwise. Stargazing on the roof top was our favorite evening entertainment. Snorkeling, kayaking, walking the beach, swimming and spending time on the roomy terrace enjoying the view and each other’s company made the days fly by. Mary was great to work with, provided lots of additional information and the security deposit was returned promptly. We would go back in a heartbeat!

Owner's Response: I'm so glad you enjoyed your time at Casa de Coco, it's a special place for special people, those who enjoy natural beauty and seclusion. You know where we are anytime you want to revisit or you're more than welcome at our other home on the Gulf beach outside of Merida. Mary

Best Yucatan vacation ever

  • 5 of 5

This was our third and best Yucatan vacation. My fisherman husband hasn't stopped gloating about his guided fishing with Nick Denbow. Our adult children loved the beach, the snorkeling, and hanging out in Mahahual. Josue and Isabel were very attentive and provided wonderful local knowledge. The house is totally comfortable. The kitchen is gourmet!

Casa de Coco is located 15 km south of the village of Mahahual and you can be as busy, or not, as you want to be. Spend Day One just on the beach reading, swimming and strolling, maybe wander down to Almaplena Beach Resort for lunch or a late breakfast. The next day hop into the car and head to Tulum, 2 hours away, to visit the ruins or checkout their busy beach scene, or maybe even play some golf. Day 3, take a trip into Chetumal, the capital of Quintana Roo, for some retail therapy at the mall, maybe stop off at Lake Bacalar, Lake of the Seven Colors, on the way home. Spend the next day close to home, maybe wander into Mahahual to sip margaritas at a beachside bar while you watch the cruise ship passengers scurry back and forth for the few hours they are ashore. You'll just sit back and smile, you get to stay
