About the property

Amazing Mountain Views From 2 Levels Of 3 Bedroom, 2 1/2 Baths

Welcome to Sugar Bear Lodge! Step into the foyer and immediately, the spectacular mountain view is awesome. You can watch the skiers in the winter. You are only a short 5-10 min. walk to the ski slopes. I love the big stone gas fireplace. It feels so cozy and relaxing during winter temps (20-40 degrees) days and beautiful fall foliage days.

You have come to the right place for SUMMER LIVING too. Getting away from the pressures of schedules, you will enjoy the cool breezes at 4,600 ft. from the deck swing. It is typically 5 degrees cooler than Banner Elk, at the base of the mountain, and usually in the 60s-70s. Remember to pack a light sweater or jacket for the cool evenings.

You will love the kitchen area: granite, stainless steel and ceramic tile with a big pine, kitchen table overlooking the mountains and a big granite topped island. Everything you need for cooking, plus a washer/dryer in the closet.

Downstairs is entirely bedrooms and baths: a king in the master bedroom with its own bath, a queen and 2 twins in the guest bedrooms with a shared bath. We have included a Pac-n-Play for your little one, a single cot and an extra mattress rolled up in the closet. The master bedroom also has a deck that walks out to the back yard, woods and trails. Every room has great views!

You will probably want to walk some of the trails or take in the wealth of fun in the area. You are perfectly situated for golf, tennis, fishing, cycling, river rafting, skiing, ice skating, snow tubing, zip line or hiking.

About Jane Dearborn

Hi! I'm Jane from Omaha, NE. My kids and grandkids live in NC so I thought the condo would be a good place for us to get together. I think you will feel the same way. It has such a comfortable ambience and tremendous view. You can't miss! I love to travel, but this is one place I want to return time and again!

What makes this condo unique

When I first walked in and saw that view, I was blown away! You can see across to Beech Mountain and the trees were a fairy wonderland of snow. We looked down and saw the skiers flying down the slopes. Then I just had to walk down to see for myself - only a 10 min walk to the top of the slopes. There are trails and trails - I will never run out of new things to see on my hikes. And other things are so close by: Wildcat Lake in Banner Elk has all the swimming, fishing and boating you could want. If you are a biker or runner, I can tell you about all the competitions in the area. If you are a golfer, you have just arrived in golf heaven - there are more golf courses than you will have time to play. Festivals and parades are plentiful in every town. I'm looking forward to the art festivals coming up, as I particularly like pottery and art quilts. Let me know your interests, and I will try to direct you.

Wildcat Lake is a great outing in Banner Elk (10 min), where you can rent a canoe, fish, swim, feed the ducks, picnic, play volleyball, or use the playground.

River Rafting is another favorite activity. Edge of the World Outfitter in Banner Elk can outfit you for a fun day in a canoe or kayak, or you can raft with a group down the Watuga River.

The Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk has live summer theatre and art shows, as well as running and biking competitions during the summer.

For your supplies, you have Food Lion, Lowe's Foods and Rite Aid Pharmacy just 8 min away. Lowe's Home & Garden is 10 min, Radio Shack is in Newland (20 min), and Walmart is in Boone (25 min).

A favorite hike for us is Jacob's Ladder, near Foscoe. You can hike up to the falls (awesome!) and see them up close. (30 min)

Hiking enthusiasts will enjoy the Profile Trail at Grandfather Mountain with it's tremendous views at 8,000 ft! It's a family oriented outing with a zoo, a Junior Ranger Program, and a swinging bridge! Plus trails for every level of hiker. A wonderful outing!

The Linville YMCA has a small water park that costs $5/day and is fun for the kids. Plus a fitness center and indoor pool and sauna (15 min).

Blowing Rock is a 35 min drive to a fairyland of quaint shops, a wonderful art museum, amazing architecture, free summer concerts, plus Kilwin Chocolate and Ice Cream Shop, (Yum!) and great sandwiches at Storie Street Grill. The Tweetsie Railroad, a kid's favorite, is near Blowing Rock.

Boone (25 min) has lots of great restaurants: Daniel Boone Buffet; Peppers restaurant has great sandwiches; Bald Guy Brew serves great coffee; Stick Boy Bread Co satisfies your sweet tooth. Horn in the West Theatre gives you a good history of the mountain area. Appalachian State University boasts summer theatre and arts shows, plus free concerts. While in Boone, be sure to visit the Mast General Store and the many artsy shops.

Perfect condo for a small group

  • 5 of 5

I booked this unit for myself and 4 friends, we were all attending a wedding in Linville Ridge Country Club. I must have looked at 100 different rentals on Sugar mountain before finding this one. This was by far the BEST choice. It really did not look like a typical rental unit. The Kitchen was practically brand new and well stocked. The condo was very clean and there were more towels and sheets than we could have ever used. No air conditioning, but plenty of windows with screens to let in fresh mountain air.

I plan on bringing up my wife and son for another trip very soon. I would definitely recommend to others.

Great Get-Away in the Mountains

  • 4 of 5

We visited this area of NC in October and loved it. Came back this time with another couple. Accomodations were as promised. The kitchen was well stocked, however, the non-stick cookware is pretty rough probably due to no appropriate utensils, but other cookware was available. (One recommendation for the cleaning company is to get the ceiling corners once in a while.) Overall, we really liked the condo. It was perfect for the 4 of us and in terms of location, it made it easy for us to get to every place we wanted to visit. Thanks Jane!

Very Clean

  • 4 of 5

It was a bit tricky finding the location, but after circling around we found the building....then came the search to get to the right unit. The building layout is a bit confusing. Condo was very clean with a well stocked kitchen. We could not locate sheets for the pull out sofa so we had to improvise. We enjoyed our stay.

Owner's Response: Dana, so glad you had a good stay! You have prompted an idea - I think we will make a map to include with the Welcome Letter. Also forwarded your thoughts to our housekeeper. Many thanks!

Easter weekend on sugar mountain.

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our easter weekend trip to sugar mountain. The condo was nicely furnished and true to photos. TV reception wasn't the best which didn't concern me but my 20+ year old sons love to watch sports. Would rent again.

The location is perfect!

  • 3 of 5

Even tho we were snowed in, the location was so close to trails and hills for sledding, we had plenty to do within walking distance. The view is so beautiful. The condo could've been cleaner and the sliding glass doors were very drafty, but, in all, we count it as one of our favorite vacations.
