About Morgan Huston

The Huston family welcomes you to one of the more special places in all of Colorado. Of course I may be biased, but it seems like every time we visit we take away unforgettable (and sometimes magical) memories. We hope you experience the same and many thanks for helping make this house a home.

You may be curious about the spelling of TWO MILE RETRUITE hanging from the log beam as you came down the driveway. Well, let me explain this play on words. The elevation of the bottom floor is exactly 10,564 feet above sea level which is 4 feet higher than two miles in elevation. The rivers and streams in this area are full of trout. My wife is French and the word “truite’ is French for trout and is pronounced roughly like the English word, “treat”. Get it?

Again, we really hope you enjoy your stay here. If you do, I would greatly appreciate if you took a little time to write a review of your experience on the VRBO website when you get home. At the same time, and if you want to, send your favorite photo to Morgan and we’ll make sure that it is added to the collection.

In the meantime, ENJOY, EXPLORE and RELAX!

Why Morgan Huston chose Valley of the Sun

This valley has a wide variety of wildlife. Don’t forget your camera when you venture out. Depending on the season, you are likely to see elk, mule deer, beavers, foxes, hares, bald eagles, hawks, ravens, blue birds, jays, hummingbirds, trout, and, last but not least, the mighty moose. You are in moose country and like any wild animal, they can be unpredictable and should be given a respectful amount of space. When harassed or startled by people or dogs, they may charge. A cow with a calf is very protective and particularly unpredictable. Quite often, moose can be observed right from the back deck. Make sure the first thing you do when you get up in the morning is to look out the windows. They are pretty active then.

There is a rich history in this part of Park County. Wildlife was once so abundant that several Indian tribes would convene in the summer to hunt and fish in peace and harmony. Mining helped to settle the area and the surrounding mountains has a lot of remaining evidence of this activity. The Ranger Station and the South Park Museum in town are wonderful places to visit and get maps and historic information.

Directly south of the house and across the road is Pike National Forest where you can get a taste of the woods. To the north is the Sacramento Creek at the end of the property. Don’t forget to bring your fishing pole. If you drive up the valley on County Road 14 to the west, a hiking trailhead will take you up to the base of the mountain range. There is a high alpine lake up there that we call Parker Lake named after our brown lab who loves to swim in it, no matter how cold the water is.

What makes this cabin unique

This house is perfectly situated if you love to ski, with access to 9 resorts in a 70 mile radius.

There's plenty of room for a large group of friends or family reunion, while being cozy enough to be a great getaway for a romantic weekend or a week in nature with the kids.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a wonderful home to spend the weekend with our family here. My boys loved exploring and playing in the house. It was so spacious and relaxing, especially after a few days of excellent skiing!

We were reading the story of the house and just talking about moose when I looked out the window and saw a cow moose! The boys (ages 5 and 7) were fascinated!

Thank you for sharing your home with us, and we hope to stay here again someday!

Lovely home, very private, spectacular views

Beautiful, secluded property in a pine forest with little ponds. The cabin was lovely and so cozy. Really a special place. The only negative would be that the kitchen wasn't well equipped. Would stay here again. My family loved it!

Great cabin in a secluded location!

  • 5 of 5

This was a great long weekend getaway cabin! Had everything our family and dogs needed...perfect main floor layout and beautifully rustic style. Well maintained, close to the nearby towns of Alma and Fairplay and only 15-20 mins from Breckenridge, many trails, fishing spots, and scenic places only a couple of miles away. Our family had a great time, had everything we needed. Highly recommend this one!

We love Colorado!!!!

  • 3 of 5

The cabin and property was amazing! The cabin is so big and roomy! It really felt homey! We really loved that part! We couldn't spent much time outside because the mosquitos were thick and vicious! That part sucked! The first night we were their we had no hot water.... So we had to be the stinky kids .... But I called the owner and they sent a repair man out the next morning and fixed it. The cabin was so beautiful but it needs sprayed bad for spiders! We lost count on how many we killed! And we do realized a country cabin gets more spiders than a town one. We also live full time in the country! We all in all had a great time! We met our son their and it was so wonderful spending time w him! We absolutely love the area and Colorado!!!

Owner's Response: We're glad you had a good time at the house! We have scheduled a fumigation of the home for the spiders, and were told that the area has had a major infestation of spiders because of unusual weather patterns. Thanks for letting us know!

The house was amazing. We have 4 kids under the age of 7. They loved playing in the ponds outside and exploring the property. It is a short drive into Breckenridge and Frisco area where we spent a lot of time. The kids loved playing foose ball as well. Great family place.
