About Dawn Grinenko

We fell in love with the quiet beauty of Hayesville, Julie Mountain and the Tusquittee Valley after purchasing a vacation home nearby. We purchased this property as part of our lifetime dream of developing a place for rest, discernment and restoration for others after difficult journeys in life. Our ultimate plan is to develop this property into a place of retreat for families who have a child or parent with a serious illness. We are both retiring from the health care field and hope to continue to serve in a healing capacity to all who visit The Still Place on Compass Creek

Dawn Grinenko purchased this house in 2013

Why Dawn Grinenko chose Lake Chatuge

Grace and patience brought us to this property. We had planned to actualize our dream at a farm in Florida. But after Dawn was diagnosed with Melanoma cattle ranching and farming in the hot Florida sun was no longer an option. After being unable to afford farm land in the Hayesville area this beautiful serene setting came on the market and as they say the rest shall be history as it unfolds. We hope you will be a part of layering this place with the love of your family and friends as we develop the property in the next several years.

What makes this house unique

Compass Creek is the true gem of this property for all ages. The soothing sound of the water is like a lullaby. The wild rainbow trout are more beautiful than any gem we might find in the ruby, sapphire and garnet laden hills surrounding us. Glimpsing the sparkle of the creek water from each of the rooms is sometimes breath-taking as the water dances around the rocks. The property is situated in a quiet, friendly community with access to trails on our 27 acre property and surrounding National Forest.

A true breath of fresh air!

This home is a HOME away. The setting is idyllic with a rustling stream, hobbit house, tree house, and large dining/sunroom for family dinners. So many amazing touches. I feel very blessed that we were given time away in a home with such love. Perfect location. 😁

Have a few kids to keep busy? This place is great! Play/Sleep in the Yurt? The knome home? Let tehm play in the creek all day, while you relax. It's close to anything you want to do. Easy to get to. Very nice and roomy home.

You will love it's "give back" roots!

Owner's Response: Thanks Erica! We hope to meet you next time you come. Seriously due to your family's choice to stay at The Still Place last weekend, just TODAY we were able to offer a family with a child on a ventilator a place of sanctuary from the storm headed toward Florida. Your family makes it possible for another to have a little less worry about their sweet little one. Thank you so much!!!

We Won the Eclipse Vacay Gamble... so perfect

  • 5 of 5

What a LOVELY experience! The site is amazing, with a very large creek, lots of trees, gathering places with fire pits (two of them!) and privacy. The home (and it felt very much like a home, rather than an impersonal 'rental') is pretty and comfortable, and, as everyone has pointed out, well-stocked. The owners, who live further up the mountain, are precious: helpful and friendly. We came for the solar eclipse, so didn't really leave the property except for the one day, but we did some scouting for a good eclipse site (even though the property has a nice hole in the tree cover over the driveway, which we used for star viewing and WOW this region has one of the top scores for 'Dark Sky' and I don't think I've ever seen that much of the Milky Way, just: WOW!) and nearby Chatuge Dam would be a great spot to trek to for next time, what a gorgeous view. We'll definitely be back. :D

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed the beauty of the night sky! We never take the Milky Way for granted but the eclipse was spectacular. Come for a longer visit next time!

Much better than expected

  • 5 of 5

We could not have been more pleased with this house. It was evident that there was a lot of thought and planning to make this a wonderful place to stay. When it was stated that it was a fully stocked kitchen, I thought that it just meant that there was an oven, stove, utensils, and small appliances. We did not realize that there would be food, dry goods and everything that you need. This made it easier to spend a lot of time with family instead of running out and shopping for things. I was unable to bring my guitar due to the amount of people in my vehicle. Imagine my surprise when there was already one there. I would definitely go back if the opportunity arose.

Fantastic place

  • 5 of 5

Everything we needed was there, including towels, sheets, blankets, stocked kitchen and washing machine/dryer. There is a beautiful creek flowing behind the house and it makes for a great place for evening fires.

The location is an ideal jumping off spot for visits to falls, hiking and the Appalachian Trail. Though, the area around the cabin offers so much to do, you could spend a week there exploring and relaxing.

Owner's Response: Thanks guys for your continued participation in The Still Place Pay-it-Forward vacation. Because of your generous support we are able to provide adventures and memories for families affected by serious illness throughout the year completely free of charge! This is the definitely the Year of The Campfire! Love that beaming look of success on the fire starter's face when I drove up and found everyone outside on a chilly morning around the fire pit. Maybe I'm just jealous? Can't wait to see you all again! And Thanks!!
