Casa Baja is located in a secure community(Castillo de Arena) on a hillside overlooking the Sea of Cortez, which is a 10 minute walk or three minute ride away. The Castillo de Arena development is home to Americans and Canadians- many full-time residents. For your security it is fenced and the entrance is monitored by video camera. We are located 5 miles south of Los Frailes, 6 miles south of Los Arbolitos (a beautiful snorkel bay where you can rent kayaks and snorkel gear, or just relax under a palapa), 10 miles south of Cabo Pulmo (where you can take fishing or diving tours, or rent water sport equipment. There are also several restaurants here), and 6 miles north of Vinorama (one restaurant). The main floor of the house, built in 2004, is an octagon, 32 feet across, which contains spaces for kitchen, dining, living, sleeping areas. The only interior walls in the octagon are for the bathroom, which includes a spectacular outdoor, but very private shower.
Where you will spend most of your time though is on the front porch (terraza), with its palm roof and beautiful view that goes from the Sea of Cortez to the mountains of southern Baja. It’s the perfect spot for morning coffee sitting on the couch or loungers and listening to the birds talk about what’s in bloom or if the time is right you can watch the whales splash about. You’ll probably be back in the evening for a drink or dinner. Nothing beats sitting around the terraza’s dining table and watching the sun set over the mountains while you feast on something you’ve just taken off the BBQ.
Below the main level and dug into the hillside keeping it partially insulated from the heat is a bedroom, with 2 twin beds (can be converted to a king bed) and attached bathroom. Also on this level is a utility space which includes a washing machine and serves as storage space for a couple kayaks which you are free to use.
There is a small library of DVD's to watch, CD's to listen to, and books to read. You can plug in your MP3 player and listen to YOUR favorite music.

My wife and I own a pharmacy in a rural, northern California town. I am active in the local theater and have written several plays. We have both appeared in several plays. My wife is an avid photographer and took many of the pictures you see on the VRBO listing. We both enjoy travelling.
Brian Bottemiller purchased this house in 2001
I bought this property in 2001 on a camping trip and decided to build in 2003. I designed the casa myself with the help of local architect and contractor, Alfredo Gomez. I have a very stressful job and when I get down here that all fades away. I enjoy the isolation and being able to enjoy the birds, fish, whales. Being able to walk for miles on the beaches and arroyos and rarely seeing a soul. The people here are so friendly and helpful, both the natives and the transplanted Canadians and Americans. I have wonderful neighbors.
The palapa house is lovely. Freshly painted and immaculate. We both enjoyed the veranda for sunrise and sunset viewing. I particularly enjoyed watching the bats swooping in the twilight; very peaceful.
The kitchen is set up well; be sure to bring everything you think you need for cooking since it is a long way to the store. Good sized fridge allows plenty of food storage and ice for drinks on the veranda. Excellent stove makes cooking easy if it happens to be windy or rainy.
Highly recommend this house for a quiet visit in a beautiful area.
We really enjoyed our stay here. The house is roomy and open plan. For just the two of us we didn't need to use the downstairs bedroom. the location is beautiful. We rented the ATVs for quick access to the beach and exploring the arroyos. You need a car to get here and to bring your own food.
While there were a few tiny issues, we had a terrific time and the house worked very well for us. The beach here is incredible.
A perfectly simple and relaxing place to stay. Nice kitchen. Everything worked as advertised. Beach was a ten minute walk away with some really big sand dunes to watch the humpback whales breaching at dusk. The kayaks were great but hard to fit on the roof of a small narrow rental car. Brian was very responsive by email.
My kids and I just returned to Washington from a week at Casa Baja. The property is as wonderful as described in the listing. We were looking for a relaxing experience away from the packaged craziness of Cabo and felt we really hit the jackpot. Previous reviews posted do a very accurate job of posting the wonders of this part of Baja--friendly people, wonderful food, stunning views and breathtaking wildlife and scenery. What I did not expect was the green aspect of the house--the power is solar and the hot water is on demand. We liked the notion we were leaving a little bit of a lighter carbon footprint. The kitchen is very well equipped, as is the music library. The owner was extremely helpful in helping us prepare for our first trip to this remote area and very quick to reply to all email queries. Neighbors are welcoming and friendly. The Castillo de Arena community was very laid back and yet felt extremely safe at the same time. Loved it -- what a jewel.
My husband and I stayed at this house with our two kids. It is the perfect house for a family of four. The view from the covered porch is breath taking. We woke up early every morning we were there to watch the sun come up over the bay. I still have a photo of the view on my phone so I can go back to our vacation in my mind from time to time.
The location is perfect! There are miles of beaches for exploring and there is a wild life reserve close by for snorkeling. The fishing was incredible while we were there as well. We fished from shore and also went out in a boat to fish more. We were able to catch most of our dinners. While playing out on the water, we were among the whales that were starting to head north for the summer, we boated right along side a pod of dolphins, we saw our first flying fish, saw many rays jumping way out of the water and even saw a sea turtle. Wow!
While staying at the house we also had an opportunity to walk up the nearby arroyo. It is a couple hours to hike up so bring water if you make this journey. Once we got way back on the arroyo we ran into where the water was still flowing and saw these beautiful water falls. Well worth the trip.
We chose to rent the quads while we were down at this house as well. Great addition to the vacation. Instead of driving anywhere in a car, we took the quads everywhere. We used them to get to the different beaches and even one night to go about a mile and a half down the road to eat out at the cross roads. There are sand dunes in front of the house and the quads were a ton of fun on those as well. While there you will notice that the neighbors use there quads to go everywhere close by as well.
My family and I love this area and we love this house. We will go back again!!
