A trip back in time!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is just cheerful. The size is perfect for two, it feels cozy without feeling like you are on top of each other. The colors just put you in a good mood; how can you not smile while cooking with a aqua blue spatula on vacation? The tv and wifi are about the only reminders that you didn't transport in time to the good ole days of not needing to lock up your bike and dinner being made for you while you were out exploring. (Tip:buy the home cooked meals that are brought to you....try it at least once....it's fabulous).

Now for the exploring. You can be bold and go all over, you can be lazy and just ride over to the beach or you can be somewhere in between, this island has something for all types of personalities. We rode bikes everywhere, you see some of the prettiest sites just staying on the path and letting it take you wherever. Whippoorwills sing, a deer runs ahead of you, no one on the beach for miles; you may think you are a Disney princess in an enchanted forest but this is actually real life. No one for miles at the beach, wildlife around but at a distance; this is the way vacations are intended to be spent. I don't think anyone could ever leave without feeling like they hung out in paradise and got rejuvenated. It's not a typical vacation for many but it is one that will always be a favorite because of just that...Go! You won't regret it!

The Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed the Candy Cottage during our stay on Sapelo Island. It was a comfortable size for two people and was relaxing to come back to after a day of exploring the island. The island is pretty spectacular, deer and dolphins within a mile of each other is something that is a must see. We loved riding around on the bikes and stopping to take pictures. It is an extremely relaxing (but active with walking and bikes if you choose not to have a golf cart) vacation that was enjoyed immensely. The island has such a natural undeveloped beauty about it that can not be described. Don't take my word for it, see it for yourself!

Map

Sapelo Island is a pristine barrier island about the size of Manhattan with 70 people living on it. Abundant wildlife and few people make this a very special place. The Georgia Marine Inst. and the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve are great places to visit and learn about marine life. The reynolds Mansion on Sapelo Island is a great trip back into the era of the great millionaires. An old indian shell ring city dating back to the Great Pyramids of Egypt can be seen. The Geechee village of Hog Hammock is your base and where the adventure begins. One of the oldest general stores in Georgia has been rebuilt and is your home and also a museum. Many miles of unspoiled beaches and miles of pristine maritime forrest are waiting to be discovered. rent a golf car or bike and see parts of the island. Get a private tour and see the north end of the island.
