Perfect for our adventurous Denali visiting family of 10

  • 5 of 5

The Stampede Cottage was the perfect fit for our big traveling family as the lure of Denali Nat'l Park brought us into the area. Keeping everyone together in such a comfortable home was so rewarding and convenient. The place was so clean and updated/new which was a huge bonus. Plenty of comfortable beds and getting the water refilled when it got low was not a problem at all. Do a few loads of laundry in the middle of our 2 week vacation in Alaska was also a major major perk. The drive from/to the park from the Stampede Cottage was perfect as Healy had much cheaper gas and it brought us to the 49th State Brewing Company for dinner one night. The ladies particularly enjoyed watching the nostalgic movie Snow Dogs as we had visited Talkeetna for the first time on the way up and the little as well as having a little free library so close just down the road at the volunteer fire station. I hope we come back to Denali one day, and if so, we'll be looking to stay here once again! Thank you so much!

Still not quite ready for prime time

  • 2 of 5

There are still a lot of little finishing projects to complete. No cupboard doors under sink. Was fairly comfortable, and could be made really nice without a lot of work. Could have been cleaner, hair in bathtubs. Tried to call owner 4 times with questions. No replies. All we wanted was the wifi password. But, knowing water needed to be hauled in, we got a bit worried since we could not get a response. No communication from owner. Baths not clean. Small table for 4 people. Don't know what you would do with a bigger group. Also, table was sticky. Beds were fresh and comfortable.

Owner's Response: I apologize for the lack of cleanliness. We were on a hunting trip up the Tanana River out of cell service and left the house with new help. We will make better preparations next year. Thank you for the note about the size of the table and the curtains. There are many stools to place around the table.

Unusual home in beautiful setting

  • 4 of 5

House was ample for a larger group than the thee couples we were. Only drawback was we couldn't get the TV to work, nor WiFi. We did try to contact owner who didn't respond.

So much to see and do that we really didn't need the TV.

Exciting plus were the moose who visited us!

Owner's Response: Sorry we missed your call. I was out of the area. The technician figured out that the DSL lines were reversed. The WiFi should not be an issue.

House with comforts of home on the borders of Denali NP

  • 5 of 5

While I would have maybe given this VRBO 4 stars if this was in any other urban area, I had to get realistic that this is the Alaskan interior in Healy on the borders of Denali National Park.

This is a home that puts you 20 minutes from the park entrance with the conveniences of nearby hiking if you'd like without going into the Park. Affordable all day diner at Rose's Cafe just downhill at the main road in Healy.

Inside we had 3 bedrooms for two (each) and upstairs an extended bedroom which room I believe for four adults plus twin bunk beds. Given we had just 7 adults and 3 kids under the age of 7, it gave us plenty of flexibility.

Two living areas, one with a tv and extensive DVD/Blu-Ray collection allowed plenty of room to spread out. Dining area is smaller, but we didn't mind. There is also a stock of toys and books at the house as well.

With water delivered rather than piped to the house, you'll have to wash dishes by hand (no big deal). Don't be afraid of running out of water though - our group of 10 had no problems with our four day stay (showers, baths, washer/dryer were used as needed and water is good to drink).

If you are worried about the internet giving out on you here at the house, our mobile phones still gave us good signal.

Though it is recommended to pickup the groceries you expect to need before heading up to Healy (shopping in Anchorage I'm guessing), you still can pickup critical supplies in Healy or Glitter Gulch. You can shop around for prices or selection - but in general expect prices to be higher and selection in fresh produce/meat/seafood to range from nil to limited. You'll be able to still put together 10 sandwiches out of $25 in comparison to the $10 sandwiches you'll find at Denali concessions.

The road up from Healy is paved but there is a short run on gravel up to the house.

Perfect location for our group as we explored the Denali Area. Comfortable beds, beautiful views and lots of memories made! Drove down Stampede for a great view of Denali, met some friendly locals, and saw some beautiful wildlife. Ate at Rose's Cafe a few times...delicious, friendly, and helpful:) The eight of us loved the house. Can tell that the owners have worked on it to make it a great place for guests. Highly recommend!
