About Max Schaefer

After 15 years of owning the Schaefer Haus, I've finally decided to share it with the world. I'm a bay area resident for the last 25 years, and have always loved the mountains. I have the home set up for myself, friends and family, but putting a new roof on this year leads me to think it's time to share the place with the public. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Max Schaefer purchased this house in 1998

Why Max Schaefer chose Truckee

Although I originally bought this home as a ski house, I find we enjoy it just as much or more in the summer. Just three hours drive from the San Francisco area, the Schaefer Haus is in the wonderful Tahoe Donner neighborhood. It's an association with great recreational facilities, a top notch golf course, a private beach on Donner Lake, and a short drive to Lake Tahoe. Most importantly, you are within 30 minutes of several great ski resorts, including Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Sugarbowl, and Northstar. When I come here, I bring my greyhounds, so it is a dog-friendly home, and your well-behaved and clean dog(s) are welcome too.

What makes this house unique

The first thing you'll notice is the fresh mountain air, the giant pine trees, and the feel of being in the mountains. But then you'll notice the comfortable home, the modern conveniences like internet and cable, the hot tub, and the proximity to limitless adventure!

Great Comfortable Home - Perfect for Families!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this home. Max is a kind and generous host and went above and beyond the call to make our vacation a great one. The minute we walked in we felt comfortable right away. The home has everything you need and a few things you didn't know you needed! My family has stayed in numerous home in Tahoe Donner (TDA) over the years and this is one of our favorites. Is it fancy? No, but we don't want that with our teenagers! The best thing we liked about this home was the huge FLAT lot that it sits on. If you've been to Tahoe Donner before you know what I mean. Many TDA homes are split level or two - three stories with bedrooms all on different floors. Lots of stairs! Max's home is one story with just a few steps to get up to the porch. That's it. Once inside all the bedrooms are on the same floor so if you have littles or grandparents with you this home is perfect for them. Because of the great room, this home still seems spacious! We are summer folk but I can imagine that this home would be great for skiers with no stairs or steep driveway to deal with in the snow. We loved the huge deck in the back with a great hot tub and really nice gas grill. The deck is perfectly situated for late afternoon shade. If you have small kids (or a dog) there is no need to worry about a deck that is two stories up off the ground. The deck has two nice tables with umbrellas and plenty of chairs. It was uncharacteristically hot while we were there but there were plenty of fans in the house to keep things cool. Other great things: Horseshoes in the back off the deck and all the gaming consoles for the kids. Thanks Max for sharing your home!

Convenient location to all activities Truckee and Tahoe have to offer!

  • 5 of 5

Great place to come and relax in the hot tub in between floating the Truckee, zip lining, trying out great restaurants on the lake or hidden gems only the locals know about in Truckee (Max has recommendations written down for places you would never find on your own!).

My wife and I stayed here for four days on our 10th anniversary. We zipped down both sides of Lake Tahoe to see all the sights and found some really beautiful cozy places in old Truckee.

My Happy Place

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed here for 9 days this summer and loved every minute of our stay! The home is spacious and comfortable and the expansive deck is such a peaceful and pleasant space to enjoy your morning coffee, evening drinks, reading, and chillin' by the hot tub. We will definitely be back!

Winter Wonderland

  • 5 of 5

This is our second year to stay at the cabin with our children and grandchildren. All of us had a fabulous time! The cabin is so inviting and relaxing...and enough room for all of us. Just walking out the patio doors we entered a beautiful open space full of snow and fun for the little ones. We spent hours sledding and building snowmen. Back inside, the kitchen is good sized and complete with everything needed to cook and feed a family of hungry people. The barbecue is very large and we enjoyed try-tip that was grilled outside on the snowy deck. We never needed to leave for any meals. In the evening we enjoyed the hot tub out on the deck, sitting under the stars and enjoying the scenery. We are already looking at our calendars to determine when we will return. It will be soon!
