About Max Schaefer

After 15 years of owning the Schaefer Haus, I've finally decided to share it with the world. I'm a bay area resident for the last 25 years, and have always loved the mountains. I have the home set up for myself, friends and family, but putting a new roof on this year leads me to think it's time to share the place with the public. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Max Schaefer purchased this house in 1998

Why Max Schaefer chose Lake Tahoe North Shore CA

Although I originally bought this home as a ski house, I find we enjoy it just as much or more in the summer. Just three hours drive from the San Francisco area, the Schaefer Haus is in the wonderful Tahoe Donner neighborhood. It's an association with great recreational facilities, a top notch golf course, a private beach on Donner Lake, and a short drive to Lake Tahoe. Most importantly, you are within 30 minutes of several great ski resorts, including Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Sugarbowl, and Northstar. When I come here, I bring my greyhounds, so it is a dog-friendly home, and your well-behaved and clean dog(s) are welcome too.

What makes this house unique

The first thing you'll notice is the fresh mountain air, the giant pine trees, and the feel of being in the mountains. But then you'll notice the comfortable home, the modern conveniences like internet and cable, the hot tub, and the proximity to limitless adventure!

Great Dog Friendly Home in Tahoe

  • 5 of 5

I rented this place for a ski weekend with some friends. The location is easy to get to (less than 10 minutes from 80), and still pretty close to the ski resorts (about 20 minutes to squaw/alpine, and even closer to Sugar Bowl). The house is very dog friendly, and has extra water bowls and a leash in case you forget to bring your own. The house "manual" was quick and easy to read when I wasn't quite sure how things in the house were supposed to work (thermostat, hot tub, etc). The layout of the house is great. The living room is very spacious, and has lots of room for lounging, playing games, etc without being too close to the bedrooms/sleeping areas. We had 7 people total, and everyone slept comfortably. I would definitely stay here again.

its comfy, its warm, its perfect

  • 5 of 5

we've stayed at this cabin a couple times (so there you go, that tells you its worth coming back too). (2 adults, 1 Toddler, 1 dog)

Its pet friendly

its a good location, we hit up the Tahoe Donner slopes once - its in the same community and only a few minutes away. even with a "guest" discount for lift tickets

large fully functioning kitchen. on our recent stay, its was snowing a ton, so we just made all our meals, the kitchen has what you need. (where else do you find a VRBO that has a pizza peel / spatula???? this is the place! and we made Pizza!!!! )

max is always a pleasure to deal with.

its not "fancy" - but its comfy, its warm, its perfect

Great location and awesome hot tub

  • 5 of 5

Very cozy and clean. Owner was great with communication. There was a welcome binder when we came in, I thought that was pretty neat. The best feature was the outdoor hot tub. Also a plus was Donner Pass was less than 5min away.

This vacation rental works really well for us! Plenty of room both inside and out.

We enjoyed another great visit to Max's cabin, as always, everything we need is provided for us. Spending time outside on the huge back deck is especially nice, enjoying the forest and the stars at night!
