About the property

A comfortable lower floor suite, part of a magnificant estate home

Chimera is something so fabulous it cant really exist. But it does here in Victoria. A quiet retreat from the pressures of life, a place to be close to nature, tranquil and unhurried , it is situated on a point of land reaching out into Esquimalt harbour on an estate that has to be seen to be believed. Nestled off a spacious deck at the waters edge is a 2 bedroom suite with private entrance . The suite is the lower floor of a large house and is a walk out suite with lots of windows and natural light. The owners live upstairs. The newly renovated kitchen provides everything you need to enjoy local produce and the comfortable light and spacious living/dining makes life easy. The bedrooms are provided with fine linen and plenty of storage and offer one queen sized bed and two twin beds. The sofa opens out to provide more sleeping accommodation with a large queen sized bed. The 2 bathrooms (one ensuite) are well appointed with luxury soaps and supplies, shower, vanity and toilet. There is an in suite laundry with washer and dryer.

The large deck reaches out from the suite to the water and provides a wonderful place to sit and soak up the sun. There is a barbeque and dining facilities on the deck. To one side is our 84 ft private dock so if you want to arrive by boat ask us about moorage or bring your kayaks and use the dock to launch and explore the waters around Cole Island, a 1857 Royal Navy building, originally for storing ammunition. The soft pink bricks of the old building glow in the sun and provide many photo opportunities.

Enjoy the local wildlife, magnificent blue herons, mink, otters, seals, swans, geese and eagles. Go crab fishing off the dock. On the other side of the property is Tovey Cove a small secluded beach with a access a few minutes walk away. The shallow water means that it warms quickly. Esquimalt Harbour is a busy working harbour and there is always something to see, with boats going in and out , canoes, kayaks, paddleboarders, divers and fishermen.

View Royal is a small community within 15 minutes of downtown and has a large supermarket, medical facilities, liquor stores and restaurants. Victoria General Hospital is a few minutes away. The Galloping Goose is a wonderful bike and hiking trail which goes from downtown Victoria , through View Royal and onto Metchosin, and Sooke . It is 60 kms long and you can get onto it within about 2 kms from the house. Bring your bikes. Thetis Lake is a wonderful hiking trail and great place for a walk It is only 1.5 kms away.

About Jean McKay

Jean McKay has lived in Victoria for 20 years after spending time in UK and Australia. After traveling the world and seeing many wonderful places she chose to make Victoria her home.

Jean McKay purchased this apartment in 2009

Why Jean McKay chose Vancouver Island

Jean fell in love with the property the moment she first set foot on it. Over the past 5 years she has completely rebuilt and renovated the old house . Jean feels that she has a responsibility to take care of and protect the grounds with their old stately arbutus trees for future generations. She is privileged to get to live here but never takes it for granted.

What makes this apartment unique

Sitting on the porch, gazing through the graceful twisted trunks of aged arbutus trees, watching the sparkling water and the light shining in from all sides showcasing the Olympic Mountains and breathing in all that fabulous fresh air bring a sense of peace and oneness with the natural world. Come here for a holiday and find a world you may have forgotten still exists.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Jean

I want to thank you for the hospitality that you gave us over the five day stay at your apartment. The whole vacation was a wonderful experience and Shirley and I will be looking forward to repeating it in the future.

Your apartment was just like home and provided us with everything that one could hope for. It is spacious and even when all six of us (including two five-year-olds) were there, the place provided ample space for everyone. The grounds are beautiful and the deck was the place to be in the warm afternoon sun. The location is also excellent — very close to grocery and other shopping as well as being very close to Hwy 1.

I highly recommend you place to anyone who wants peace and quiet, great accommodation, and a wonderful environment.

With thanks

Breathtaking Location

  • 4 of 5

Watch the land, sea, and sky wake up in the morning as you relax with your cup of coffee on the patio surrounded by the water. This is an extremely beautiful location in View Royal - only a 15 minute drive from downtown Victoria. Incredible. The two bedroom suite is well laid out and very comfortable. The suite is a walk up though, so keep this in mind if stairs are an issue. The main views are around the property, so do get out and enjoy the location. Great value for the property. I would highly recommend it and would stay there again when visiting Victoria. We only gave 4 of 5 stars because we had to do a little cleaning when we arrived: sink and sweeping of floor. Nothing major, but we were surprised by this. We met the hostess, Jean, and she was very nice.

Comfortable in all weather.

  • 4 of 5

The property is beautiful if only you could have done something about the rain. But really if it is going to rain Jean's property was a wonderful place to watch a storm. Jean and her son made us feel welcome. The beds were very comfortable. And since there was weather brewing we cooked in and had all the equipment that we needed for that.

The Point

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a place that could accommodate 6 people in or near Victoria. My wife and I tend not stay at chain accommodations. We stayed for 3 nights in June 2016 with 4 people - the other couple had changed plans. Other portions of the property was under construction at the time, but Jean had suspended that work for our stay and really was barely noticeable. Parking is on site.

The suite is on the first floor, several steps below grade, looking out on to a veranda. It has two bedrooms - the master bedroom with a queen bed and bathroom (under repair during our stay) and a second room with two beds. There is a common hallway bathroom that can be restricted to the second bedroom. Their is a spacious great room with a living room area and a kitchen area. The kitchen is complete except for food; nice touch with supplied k-cups. You could easily live here for extended periods.

The outside veranda and pier area are impressive. Furnished with outdoor furniture and beautiful gardens. On a clear day we could easily see the mountain peaks on the Olympic Peninsula. The inlet appears to be primarily a sailboat anchorage. One morning, we saw a large gathering of sea otters playing on an adjacent pier.

While you are outside Victoria, it is easily reachable by car. We did not try public transportation to get into town. Grocery stores are 5 to 1o minutes away.

The property is better than the VRBO photos and descriptions.

Highly recommended and a great value. Jean is a gracious host and this is great vacation rental.

You will sign a detailed agreement to use this property and security deposit of $250 is required. Jean refunded that deposit before we even made it home.

Amazing location, great suite, close to Victoria, highly recommend. Great owner and wonderful dogs

  • 5 of 5

The property is located on a quiet point overlooking the sound, just as it is shown on the photograph. It is about 15 to 20 minutes from downtown Victoria when traffic is normal. Great places to walk and it is a quiet neighborhood. The suite is a very nice 2 bedroom in the basement of a

Large home but there are several windows and sliding doors and therefore it does not feel like a basement. There is a great outdoor area for sitting. We loved it. The bonus is the owner is very gracious and her dogs are awesome. We felt at home and the place made our trip very special.

Thank you Jean for providing an amazing place

This vacation home was beyond our expectations, it was truly stunning!!!

  • 5 of 5

We traveled as a group of 4 to Victoria and were impressed with this vacation rental. Jean was a wonderful hostess and was very helpful. The property was clean and well maintained. Everything needed was provided. We especially loved the outdoor space with the ocean views. It was so good, we were reluctant to leave. We would definitely come again and try to stay longer to enjoy the view.
