Enjoy water views from every room. Open air living, dining, kitchen and family rooms provide guests with
all the comforts of home. Four bedrooms and a FROG with 2 single beds.
Waterfront pier provides access for fishing, boating, crabbing and more. Bird watchers will never tire of all the osprey who flock each year to raise their chicks in nearby nests. The blue heron is a frequent guest and looks like a 747 come alive. They croak loudly when disturbed. Keeping the birdbaths full draws the blue birds and cardinals and chickadees..they splash like a toddler in a tub!
World wide travelers from Va Beach search for a retirement retreat for their growing family and grandchildren. Our first grandson came to the water at age 3;he is now 26.Five more grandchildren followed and still visit often. It is our favorite family gathering place.
30 years in the USN,tech positions and then retirement for Jim made him more than ready for the quiet, secluded Mathews homestead.Lou Ann busied herself raising the 4 children, resuming her nursing career, studying music, theology and also becoming a travel agent.
susan laurance purchased this house in 1993
The owners found the perfect spot for building their retirement/vacation home. The only problem was, the property wasn't for sale. Several years of spontaneous visits forged an amazing friendship with the owner and when he decided to sell the property, he invited Capt. Jim & Lou Ann to take the reins and build their dream retreat. They spent a year in a used trailer, meeting their incredible builder,Bobby Thomas, who took their sketches and built our home. We still honor his memory by calling it 'the house that Bobby built'.
Private road, secluded, peaceful, water access for fishing, boating, kayaking, Bird watching, especially the yearly migration of the osprey..arriving March 15 and departing September 15.The nest, west of the house, keeps our binoculars at the ready. Most evenings you will find us on the west porch, watching the sunset over Stokes Creek-it never gets old! The quiet surroundings soothe our souls.
Wow, what a view! Your coastal home was everything promised! Our entire family had a great week kayaking, swimming, fishing, crabbing, & sunning! We even kayaked to Rigby Island for an afternoon. We did some shopping in town & had an old fashioned milkshake at fountain/luncheonette. We were treated to a 2 hour lightning show one evening. the sky was amazing! Thanks for sharing your home.
What a great place to get away to. Great fishing off the dock, crabbing everyday and the kids kayaking to the private island across the water. They played football laid out on the beach and pretty much spent their days there. (No crowds it was only us everyday on this island) The girls were on the kayaks and had come upon something in the water. As they got closer to it it was dolphins and they were swimming all around the kayak they were on. That was such an amazing time for them. Even the day it rained there's plenty of games to play inside . We will definately want to come back! They supply so much more than you can imagine a place your at would have. So much FUN!
This home was great for our family get away, it has a large open area for family togetherness and games. The front porch overlooking the bay is so very tranquil and relaxing. The grandkids especially loved using the kayaks to go to the small island across from the dock. Jim was very helpful, explaining everything about the property and activities in the area. It is close to Williamsburg and we enjoyed spending time at the historic city. Would definitely recommend this property for family get always.
Our family had a wonderful experience celebrating Thanksgiving at this lovely home. The weather was perfect allowing us to fish and kayak the whole weekend. We have already booked a return trip this summer and can't wait to visit again.
Beautiful views from inside or from the wrap-around porch. Just a wonderful place to relax and enjoy kayaks, fishing, crabbing, and....most importantly....finding time to catch up with each other in a beautiful setting. This was our second year at Osprey Landing.....and hopefully not our last.
The Property was absolutely beautiful and we had a wonderful time. The fishing and crabbing were super fun. The kayaks were great! The water was nice to swim in. The town of Matthews was a quaint little town with all of the essentials. All 11 of us had a fabulous time. We plan on going back one day!

NEW POINT COMFORT NATURE PRESERVE is a short 15 minute drive. It provides a unique look at life at the edge of the Chesapeake Bay. It was commissioned in 1804 by Thomas Jefferson. Depending on the tide, this site combines tidal shallows, mudflats, beach, exposed pilings, and deep offshore channels, all of which offer their own assortment of numerous waterbirds, lusty displays of fiddler crabs and yellow Seaside Dragonlets, our only truly saltwater dragonfly. You may experience this beauty on the boardwalk, or launch a kayak or canoe there.
