Murphy Cottage Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom, 1 bath cottage in quiet community near Hiwassee Lake (Sleeps 2-4)

The BLUE SHUTTER COTTAGE is in the residential community of Bear Paw, a private, 24-hour gated community in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of southwestern North Carolina. Bear Paw is the only community located on HIWASSEE LAKE with a full-service MARINA. The lake is almost completely surrounded by protected PUBLIC LAND... with great boating, fishing & hiking opportunities. At Bear Paw you get the best of both worlds: a quiet, beautiful, remote mountain setting with a family-friendly, community atmosphere!

The Blue Shutter Cottage is a cozy one bedroom, one bath cottage. It's just two cottages away from the pool... yet it is tucked back against the mountain to insure privacy. Even though it's a charming early 20th century structure that was part of the original Hiwassee Dam village, it's been completed modernized with all the 21st century conveniences. Although the cottage doesn't currently have internet service, free secure WiFi is available 24/7 at the clubhouse that is within sight of the house.

The LIVING/DINING ROOM ... has a sleeper sofa, flat screen TV with ample satellite service and a DVD player, along with a dining table and chairs.

The KITCHEN ... has everything you need to prepare that special meal, including a refrigerator, stove & oven, crock pot, microwave, DISHWASHER, coffee maker, kitchen utensils, dishes, and pots & pans. A small washer & dryer are also provided for your convenience.

The large BEDROOM... has a KING SIZE BED... linens are provided, pillows, dresser and a spacious closet. The BATHROOM... includes a hair dryer & fluffy towels.

The SCREENED PORCH has rocking chairs to enjoy your morning coffee or tea, and the open DECK has a gas grill, along with a table and chairs to enjoy your meals and a view of the wooded hillside.

There is lots of room for parking, so bring your boat or rent one from the marina. Come... enjoy the fresh mountain air. You will make memories that are priceless. Visit bearpawcottagerental(dot)com for more photos and information. We've tried to anticipate your every vacation need!

Recently VRBO/Homeaway has instituted a new "Book it now" feature and essentially made it mandatory that we make it available to prospective guests. It works well and is secure, however it includes a service fee that goes to the company, even though we as owners have already paid the company a substantial amount to have this listing. You can avoid this service fee by booking directly through us either by mailing a personal check (if there is time) or booking securely through our web site link using a major credit card or PayPal account. In order to go this route, use the blue "Send Email" link instead of the "Request to Book" button at the top and I'll send instructions.

About Callie Moore

Philip & I first rented Blue Shutter Cottage as newlyweds in 2006. He had visited Bear Paw with his family as a child and I surprised him with a weekend getaway there! His mother lived at Bear Paw until she was in the 7th grade, as her father worked for TVA helping to build Hiwassee Dam. The village at Bear Paw was originally constructed as housing for the workers and their families because the area was not really settled back in the 1930s.

Philip is a Clay County, NC native, born and raised on a small working farm. I'm originally from Nashville, Tennessee. We both are employed by nonprofit conservation organizations that, in different ways, work to preserve quality of life for mountain residents. We are also avid hikers and general outdoor enthusiasts and would be happy to help point you toward trails in the area suited to your taste and ability!

Callie Moore purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Callie Moore chose Smoky Mountains

We bought Blue Shutter because of its proximity to the lake (it's only 0.6 miles to Mountain View Marina), the availability of trails and outdoor activities nearby in both Cherokee (TN) and Nantahala (NC) National Forests, and the amenities at Bear Paw. It feels remote, but it's also a little community. We also like the historical aspect of it being the original Hiwassee Dam workers' village. Our cottage has been completely modernized, but it's still the charming original structure.

What makes this cottage unique

It's quiet, but yet there is the wonderful pool (new in 2009), clubhouse with free wireless internet access, tennis court, basketball goals, and a playground for younger children all within easy walking distance of the cottage. The cottage is about 25 minutes of driving from Murphy, NC, and Copper Hill, TN and within an hour of Blue Ridge and Blairsville, GA, Tellico Plains, TN, and Brasstown and Hayesville, NC. It's a great getaway spot in an area that is largely overlooked as a vacation destination!

We enjoyed spending our honeymoon at Blue Shutter Cottage. It was exactly as pictured & the area was beautiful. Bear Paw was a cute place & the area was what we wanted, off the beaten path with beautiful countryside, which we enjoyed exploring. Callie & Philip were great to work with & we did find all the ladybugs!

Great little cottage

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I wanted to get away to a quiet place and enjoy the fall colors. This cottage fit the bill. Older cottage built during depression era while the nearby dam was being built. Nicely updated and part of a large community that has sprung up around the Hiawassee Lake. Cell phone and internet are spotty at best so it forced us to get even more quiet. The area of SW NC is really full of nice friendly people, we met a number that have retired there for the weather and locale. The owner was very helpful with information on cottage and the surrounding area. Cottage was nice and clean and has most everything you need, even coffee filters for the coffee maker! Over all our experience was very pleasant and what we expected. Good value for price paid.

This was our third year in a row renting the Blue Shutter cabin. Every year it's always clean, well maintained, and stocked with the essentials to make our summer get away feel more like home! It's a perfect place to go and unplug for the week, reconnect with family, and RELAX! Thank you Callie & Phillip for sharing your home with us again this year :) See you next year!

Wonderful perfect getaway place!

  • 5 of 5

Cabin just as pictured. Owners have wonderfully preserved the history of the cabin while also updating to modern ammenities such as AC (which I did not have when my family rented these when I was a child). The cabin was neat, tidy, cheerful with comfy sofa and an amazing rocking chair. Table for four was also perfect for playing board games at night. Pool and tennis court were within a stone's throw. We drove to marina to carry our fishing gear, but I remember walking the distance as a child although the hills and narrow road may be easier to drive, but still a very short distance. We also enjoyed the big chubby ground hog out the bedroom window. It was the most wonderful, relaxing family vacation we have ever had with some much needed quality time together. My husband even commented how content we were for the one amazing week we had here. Thank you so much for sharing you property with our family. We are looking forward to coming again!

My family and I stayed at Blue Shutter in Bear Paw for 5 days. We found everything we have at home to make our stay feel like home. The cottage was in great condition and tidy. There were also lots of things to see around the area within a short drive.

We would definitely book another stay there.

Thank you Callie for sharing your place with us.- Maggie

VRBO/Homeaway incorrectly calculates the price for stays of 8-13 nights in their auto-generated quotes. Please contact us directly for a quote if you are planning a stay of more than 7 nights!

Although we are happy to try to accommodate last minute travel plans, we are much more likely to give a discount on dates booked more than 30 days in advance. We both have other full-time jobs, making it sometimes difficult to make preparations with only a few days notice.
