It is tough to get around in Vermont without a car. There is minimal public transportation. It is a 1 mile walk to either a bus stop or Richmond Village from this house.
Kristen and Rod are transplants to Vermont, although we both came here when we were kids. Kristen works for the University of Vermont and Rod is self employed and works from home, next door.
Rod & Kristen West purchased this house in 2013
We choose the name Thompson Cottage to honor Madeline Thompson who lived here nearly her whole life until she passed away in 2013. The cottage was built for her and her husband Hobart, who farmed in this area for many years. It is a solid house that raised two children (Jon still farms in NY state with his children) and has hosted countless farm meals for family and friends.
Staying at Thompson's Cottage is like entering a time machine that magically allows you to stay at Grandma's house again. This extremely well maintained gem is a true treat for lovers of old homes and period architecture. Everything from the hardwood floors, to the vintage door knobs, to the built in ironing board transported me back to visiting relatives when I was a little girl. Every detail was perfect from the hand crocheted afghans to what I believe were hand stitched quilts on the beds. The street it's on is quiet, the trees are mature growth, and the Vermont air is crisp and clean. Rod West is an extremely gracious and helpful host. I hope to stay there again in the future.
Our family of five (2 adults, 3 children) stayed five days over the holidays hoping to ski nearby. While the warm Dec. weather did not cooperate, we had fun nevertheless. The spacious cottage had ample room to just stay in. The kiss also enjoyed sledding and making a snowman on the grounds. We liked hiking through the surrounding fields, exploring natures many unusual wonders. Kids loved it. We all especially enjoyed the cozy living room with gas fireplace when the temp finally dropped. And, yes, we finally skied the final two days!
We loved staying in this home for a few days. It was very well equipped and clean. We had 5 adults and found it very comfortable.
We stayed at the Thompson Cottage for 3 nights over Labor Day week-end. Several family members were attending a wedding over the week-end. Our host was very accommodating with various arrival times - one party was getting in a day ahead of the rest of us. The cottage perfect for us, it is beautifully maintained and clean home. We enjoyed the outside seating with a view of the milky way. We also enjoyed cool night air on the screened in porch. Burlington and Lake Champlain are short drives away and several ski areas are near by. A great place to visit and a great place to stay.
We recently stayed at Thompson Cottage for 2 nights while visiting the Burlington area. Six adults were very comfortable in the 3 bedrooms. Our host Rod was very accommodating and provided advice on some local restaurants. The location is perfect, close to Burlington as well as several ski areas in the winter. The house is very clean and well appointed and the yard is great. It's also a great value for this area. We will definitely be back!
We were four adults travelling together and found this three bedroom one bath rental perfect. The Keurig machine with coffee was appreciated each morning before we hit the road for our adventures in the Burlington area. Our host Rod provided the history of Thompson Cottage and we appreciated the advice on directions and local eateries. The location was just outside of Burlington with easy access to all attractions in the area. The bedrooms were fair sized and the bathroom and kitchen were well stocked. Except for breakfasts, we did not eat in but the dining room table was inviting and the living room comfortable for relaxing.
The town of Richmond is small enough to be friendly and 'Vermonty', but still have a few amenities. There are several great restaurants and a small, well-stocked supermarket. Burlington, UVM and Lake Champlain are a 20 minute drive west and there are downhill and nordic ski areas 20 minutes to the east. Hiking and canoeing are even closer.
