About Rod & Kristen West

Kristen and Rod are transplants to Vermont, although we both came here when we were kids. Kristen works for the University of Vermont and Rod is self employed and works from home, next door.

Rod & Kristen West purchased this house in 2013

Why Rod & Kristen West chose Vermont

We choose the name Thompson Cottage to honor Madeline Thompson who lived here nearly her whole life until she passed away in 2013. The cottage was built for her and her husband Hobart, who farmed in this area for many years. It is a solid house that raised two children (Jon still farms in NY state with his children) and has hosted countless farm meals for family and friends.

The town of Richmond is small enough to be friendly and 'Vermonty', but still have a few amenities. There are several great restaurants and a small, well-stocked supermarket. Burlington, UVM and Lake Champlain are a 20 minute drive west and there are downhill and nordic ski areas 20 minutes to the east. Hiking and canoeing are even closer.

Charming 50s style cottage, very comfortable, hosts are great

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in Richmond. Rod and Kristen had provided everything we might need, the house was super clean and comfortable. It's hard to find a place for 3 single people, so we really appreciated having 3 bedrooms. The house is old, but very well maintained. It was lovely sitting on the screened-in porch in the evening. Many thanks!

Great home, for a great value

  • 5 of 5

We needed a place in between Burlington, Stowe & Waterbury and this was a better value and location than any hotel we could find. There were 4 of us total, and it provided exactly what we needed, quiet, plenty of bedrooms, and full kitchen. Rod was an excellent host. He was in constant communication the week leading up to, and the day of our arrival. He even accommodated us with an early check in. One early morning when we couldn't find the measuring cups Rod was over within minutes to help us out ... he saved breakfast! Despite it being mid July, the house was very cool at night. We will be hoping to rent this house next time.

Wonderful Place to Stay!

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Thompson's Cottage is like entering a time machine that magically allows you to stay at Grandma's house again. This extremely well maintained gem is a true treat for lovers of old homes and period architecture. Everything from the hardwood floors, to the vintage door knobs, to the built in ironing board transported me back to visiting relatives when I was a little girl. Every detail was perfect from the hand crocheted afghans to what I believe were hand stitched quilts on the beds. The street it's on is quiet, the trees are mature growth, and the Vermont air is crisp and clean. Rod West is an extremely gracious and helpful host. I hope to stay there again in the future.

Great stay for familiy

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five (2 adults, 3 children) stayed five days over the holidays hoping to ski nearby. While the warm Dec. weather did not cooperate, we had fun nevertheless. The spacious cottage had ample room to just stay in. The kiss also enjoyed sledding and making a snowman on the grounds. We liked hiking through the surrounding fields, exploring natures many unusual wonders. Kids loved it. We all especially enjoyed the cozy living room with gas fireplace when the temp finally dropped. And, yes, we finally skied the final two days!

Owner's Response: Tom, We are very happy that your family had a good vacation, despite the poor skiing conditions. It was a pleasure to meet you all and thanks for leaving the cottage in such good shape. Next time you come to Vermont, we hope you will feel like coming back "home" here again. Regards, Rod & Kristen

Convenient location, beautiful home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Thompson Cottage for 3 nights over Labor Day week-end. Several family members were attending a wedding over the week-end. Our host was very accommodating with various arrival times - one party was getting in a day ahead of the rest of us. The cottage perfect for us, it is beautifully maintained and clean home. We enjoyed the outside seating with a view of the milky way. We also enjoyed cool night air on the screened in porch. Burlington and Lake Champlain are short drives away and several ski areas are near by. A great place to visit and a great place to stay.
