About Downie Manor
'Major' William H. Downie, a renowned gold prospector, recognized as the founder of Downieville, California. As the first house built in the area, this was a rustic log cabin situated high above the river. It is by virtue of this structure that Downie claimed to be the founder of Downieville. He was said to have offered a coffee can full of gold if they would name the town after him.
Downie Manor purchased this House in 2010
Why Downie Manor chose Downieville
A destructive fire in the early 2000, claimed Downie's original cabin site. Happily, a new house has recently been completed on the site and is available for short term rental. You can experience the beauty and serenity which William Downie recounted in his memoirs. 'The scene that burst upon us was one of marvelous beauty and after these many years, it still lays before me like a lovely panorama in my recollection of the moment I first saw it.'

Great Downieville House
The house was awesome and well located. Well-equipped and a garage for bikes. We spent a bunch of time on the front porch grilling, eating, and making new friends :) . We will definitely come back.
What a wonderful surprise!
Last week we stayed at the Downie Manor and it's Carriage/Small house. What a wonderful surprise and stay. The two houses were very well decorated, stocked (towels, linens, dishes, cookware, etc) and clean. The multiple patios gave us a great place to visit and entertain. The master bedroom with attached patio, a place to relax and enjoy our time in Downieville, was an extra plus. This is truely a "must place to stay". We will, again next year.

DISAPPOINTED IN DOWNIEVILLE
As we came into the house on Aug. 15th 2016, the 1st. thing we noticed was the strong odor and musty smell the house had. Even after opening the doors and windows it was still there. Inspecting the house, there were no cooking utensils, no bar-b-q utensils, not even a lighter. No garbage bags, no extra towels, no sponges for dishes except for a dirty, stinky one that the cleaner told us she uses for the whole house, Gross! no foil or clearwrap, no food storage containers for leftovers, zero condiments, no extra toilet paper or paper towels. There was well over 10 bags of household/food garbage stored in the garage! Very unsanitary! No broom to sweep with and cobwebs everywhere. Dirty stove/oven and the microwave vent popped off and hit me on the head. Nice bump! We have pics of everything mentioned. We called the owner and spoke concerning items. He wanted us to write a list and he would resolve the next day! We're on vacation and shouldn't have to deal with these issues at $$$$ a night! Felt more like we were camping with a roof over our head.
Lovely town and house. Central location, nice place, we were happy. Owners super easy to work with.
Thank you for your kind words. I hope you will come back soon. We enjoyed having you.
Great location, nice and roomy
We have stayed here twice now and have enjoyed it both times. The bedrooms are big and comfortable, and it is a short walk to the river and downtown. Kitchen could be a little better stocked but overall we loved it and will be back.
awesome house for the week
The house was just great, super clean, and a lot of room for everyone. The front deck area was super fun to BBQ on and eat out side over looking the river. Awesome little town with tons of history.
