Why Hal & Katherine Stokes chose Burnsville

Katherine & I had been looking for a mountain retreat for a few years and knew we wanted a small cozy place in NC above 3000 ft. in altitude. After attending my oldest son's graduation from law school in Charlotte, NC we visited Burnsville and met with a real estate agent who by chance happened to show us Alpine Village Resort. One look at the outstanding views as we entered Alpine Village Resort and we were hooked. It's a beautiful hidden gem that only a few people know about. We're happy we can share this beautiful spot with you.

What makes this chalet unique

Second visit as perfect as the first

  • 5 of 5

We fell in love with this area last year and had to return again this year. The unit was clean, comfortable and just the right size for our family of 3. The resort community is very welcoming as well. While we were there there was an ice cream social in the club house where we meet other travelers as well as unit owners. They also had a bingo night later in the week. The location is perfect as a base for exploring the area. Hiking, waterfalls, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Asheville and surrounding areas are all nearby.

Unit was very dirty but the common areas, pool and club house were nice.

  • 2 of 5

When we arrived we had trouble unlocking the door because the door knob is loose on the door. We used only the dead bolt during our stay. The ceiling fan had dust hanging off all the blades. The kitchen floor had crumbs and a battery on it. The stove drip pans under the burners were black with caked on food and the oven was disgusting. The dishwasher was also nasty. The unit was built in the mid '80s so I'm guessing the stove and dishwasher are original to the unit and have NEVER been cleaned. The couch was so uncomfortable that we used folded blanket in it to cushion our bottoms. One bed made so much noise that when one of us turned over it woke up the other. The other bed had some kind of plastic cover on the mattress which made sleeping very warm and the sheets would not stay on the bed. Looked like the cold air return had never been cleaned. I was going to look at the filter but was afraid of what I'd see. Almost forgot, some of the baking pans were rusted and some plats were cracked and glued back together. I CANT BELIEVE WE HAD TO PAY A CLEANING FEE FOR A PLACE THAT WAS NOT CLEAN WHEN WE GOT THERE. Way over priced and will never stay there again.

Owner's Response: ***THIS WAS A FAKE REVIEW*** It was brought to our attention that both the owner and the property manager of a competitor chalet in Alpine Village Resort purposefully booked our unit specifically to leave a bad review. They receive very few bookings themselves because it is managed by a relative of theirs who also happens to be a former disgruntled employee of Alpine Village. We are currently working with VRBO to have this fake review removed and we are also working with our legal counsel to initiate a civil suit against these individuals for slander. If you read any of our other reviews, you'll see that this review was posted maliciously. It is too bad because there are more than enough rentals for all of the property owners in the area to share. Rather than being upset with us for being booked so frequently and trying to harm our business, they should be upset with their own property manager for her lack of professionalism which is preventing their unit from getting bookings.

A charming cabin, nestled in the mountains

  • 5 of 5

Finch 2 provides all the comforts of home in a beautiful mountain setting. In the morning, you can step out on the balcony, inhale the cool air, and enjoy a stunning view of Mt. Mitchell, other peaks, and a valley that spreads out below like fantasy before your eyes.

The two-bedroom, two-bath cabin includes all the most up-to-date features, including a strong wi-fi signal. The linens are clean, the furniture is comfortable, and a fireplace is ready when you want to turn off the lights and enjoy the rustic simplicity of that experience.

The cabin includes a nice kitchen and dining room. If you like to grill, you’ll find a gas-powered grill on the front deck. The cabin includes a TV, but you might be too busy enjoying the natural beauty of the region to turn it on. There is enough to do that you won’t miss television, and you may be too tired after an active day to watch anything for that matter.

The hosts, Hal and Katherine Stokes, have made Finch 2 one of the most fabulous mountain-top experiences anywhere. For such a reasonable price, it is surprising how excellent a vacation package deal awaited us. If you want comfort, peace, and beauty, this is the place to go.

Mountain getaway

  • 5 of 5

Perfect for what we were looking for. A long weekend retreat from life in the mountains. We stayed in mid October just as the leaves were turning this fall. Beautiful views from the deck. We used Finch 2 as our base for day hikes and trips along the parkway. Clean, comfortable and well provisioned.

Peaceful and pristine

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a peaceful and quiet stay for four nights recently. Hiking and water activities are close by. The pool was a welcome feature. We had everything we needed to cook our meals (don't forget to stock up on food and beverages for your stay before heading up the mountain!) I met the owner, Katherine, upon our check in and the couple left us a tasty welcome snack. Thank you for sharing your home away from home with us.
