Guestbook comments from the manager

This home is exactly as advertised. It is absolutely beautiful with wonderful landscaping surrounding it, most of which was already there naturally, as Volcano Village is located in a rain forest.

The home has three bedrooms (and two full bathrooms) that can easily accommodate six people comfortably. Most windows look into the rain forest which surrounds the house. The driveway is gravel and narrow, but there is space for several cars to park. If you only have one car, then you have enough room to turn around and drive out facing forward, but if more than one, you may need to back out of the driveway. However, it is a sparsely traveled road. The location is very quiet. All you will hear is the rain and the birds.

The owners greet you personally on the first day to ensure you understand where everything is and how everything works. They are very friendly. Their home is absolutely beautiful! Again, it is just as pictured. It is very clean and has almost everything you could want. Anything the owners didn't originally have is probably there now. We stayed there a week without any issues. Keep an eye on the amount in the propane tanks to ensure you will have enough if you are staying longer than a week.

The towels were very soft and the bedding was flannel, as it gets very cold at night. There are plenty of extra pillows and blankets in the closets. There are no dressers in the bedrooms, but there are shelves in the closets to store clothes or other items.

Some items that were provided: toilet paper, tissues, shampoo, conditioner, q-tips, soap, disposable razors, hand soap, first aid kit (we added hydrogen peroxide next to it), pots, pans, dishes, silverware, spices, coffee maker (coffee filters too), glassware, iron, flashlight, trash bags (garbage/recycling out back), washer detergent/softener, and even two umbrellas for use in the park. There is a gas stove and range, and a large refrigerator. The only thing they do not have is a dishwasher, so you will have to handwash. (soap provided)

Wonderful Home and close to Volcano National Park

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place for our family of six. Very comfortable and plenty of space for all. And yes, purchase your groceries in Hilo if you are planning to prepare meals here. Thanks so much for a wonderful stay.

Owner's Response: Mahalo for taking the time to write us a review! We really appreciate it and we are happy to know that you were very comfortable in our home. As you clearly discovered, it is better to buy all groceries in Hilo or Kona, depending on where you are driving from before heading to the house in Volcano Village. Supermarkets such as Safeway, Target and KTA can be found in both Hilo and Kona. For more specific organic items, guests can go to stores such as Island Naturals and Abundant Life. Please come back and see us again sometime! Aloha, Mauricio & Paola

Great vacation home with perfect amenities for families.

  • 5 of 5

Great information about the area provided by the owner. Perfect place to return after day trips and hikes. We all loved the pool table, hot tub, and rain forest setting. Books, DVDs and Netflix made for fun evenings. Thanks!

Owner's Response: Mahalo for taking the time to write us a review! We are very glad to hear that you had the time to enjoy the house amenities. We always try to keep in mind multi-generational families and the different ways they can entertain themselves. Your vacation is our passion. On the other hand, the Volcano Rain Forest is our biggest ally and most priceless attraction. We are still in love with this magical place and that we can now share with guests like you makes us very happy! One more time, a warm mahalo for staying at our house and keep in mind that you have now a home on the Big Island to come back whenever you want. Wonderful Hideaway in the Rain Forest

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time. The kids all enjoyed the ping pong table after a long day in the car, the hammock was briefly fought over, and we enjoyed a nice fire in the morning. Would have liked to rate four-and-a-half stars because of a lack of some kitchen utensils (wire whisk, metal tongs), well-used pans, and not enough of some silverware items. However, we loved our stay and would be happy to come again. The kids said they liked it better than the posh condo we stayed in at Mauna Lani! Thanks so much!!

Quaint and Cozy Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Alas Del Kealoha for 5 nights while honeymooning on Hawai'i. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the owners, Paola and Mauricio. They were very warm, welcoming, friendly and hospitable. The property is just as pictured...perhaps even better! It was quaint and charming with Hawaii flair. Paola gave us a quick tour of the property and recommended a few places nearby where we could dine, shop for groceries, and go sightseeing (the Thai food truck down the street is a must). She also shared some invaluable information regarding how to view the lava in a more safe way from Kalapana as opposed to through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This really saved us from hiking with toxic plumes blowing in our faces! We loved the closeness and proximity of the house to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It was wonderful to be able to wrap ourselves up in a couple of their blankets and take the short drive over to view the crater at night from the Jagger Museum. Man was it cold and windy up there at the museum! The blankets sure saved us!

The house offered anything we could need away from home. Cookware, dishes, silverware, name it! Condiments in the fridge, toiletries in the was truly the perfect home away from home! We enjoyed watching movies in the evenings before bed, cooking Hawaiian breakfast in the mornings, and relaxing in the hot tub after that 8 mile hike to view the lava.

The only bummer was that the washing machine was not working when we visited...we were island hopping for about 2 weeks and had hoped to be able to throw a load in while we were staying there. Nonetheless, we were able to wash our clothes by hand with the detergent they provided and toss them in the dryer (which was working)!

Mahalo for a fabulous stay! We're already planning to return with our family and friends!

Wonderful relaxing retreat!

  • 5 of 5

The owners are very nice. The home is clean, cozy and comfortable, and the gardens are just beautiful. My kids each had a bedroom and used the hot tub every evening after a day hiking in the park or going to the beaches. We loved staying at the house in the mornings, late afternoons and evenings just to hang out, read, watch some of the Olympics on TV, and be together as a family. I would say that we loved staying there as much as we loved hiking in the amazing Volcanos National Park. Special place.

Owner's Response: Mahalo for taking the time to write us a review. You are right. Our biggest asset is actually the rain forest where the house is located. We are very happy to know that the house pleased you and your family as much as the Hawaiian Rain Forest. What a complement! Aloha, Mauricio & Paola

Beautiful Rainforest Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for two nights while exploring Volcano National Park and we wish we had stayed longer. The house was lovely and had everything we needed plus more. The porch was the best feature. The kids were thoroughly entertained with the ping pong table and air hockey table while the adults enjoyed the hot tub and hammock which overlooked the lush rainforest. And the house was so close to the park that it was easy to pop over at night to see the crater glow (a must!). Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Owner's Response: Mahalo for your kind words! As you said, exploring the Volcano National Park while having a near by house available to rest between lava glow watching is not only convenient but also interestingly rewarding. Honestly, the lush rain forest surrounding the house is the one that should get all the credits. We are glad to hear that you were able to notice and discover such an interesting ecosystem during your stay at Alas Del Kealoha. We are just trying to be good care takers of one of the most beautiful places on earth. On the other hand, we are very happy to hear that children and adults were able to enjoy some of the house amenities! Our goal is to provide as much entertainment as we can to all ages. Your vacation, our passion. Mission accomplished! Aloha, Mauricio & Paola Barbis Alas Del Kealoha Owners
