Magazine St. Gem! Spacious, clean 2-BR with nice big porch

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,600 sq ft
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Terrific spot at the edge of the historic Garden District with room to relax

This very big apartment (1600 sq. ft.) has a wide front porch on a lovely residential block of Magazine Street, with loads of great shops, restaurants, bars and boutiques in easy walking distance in either direction. The French Quarter is easy to reach, just a quick car or bus ride straight downtown. We also have a pair of cruiser bicycles that you're free to ride.

The location can't be beat for being close to downtown but not in the thick of it. Commander's Palace and Lafayette Cemetery are blocks away. The house also is just a five-block walk past the historic mansions of the Garden District to the St.Charles Avenue streetcar and Mardi Gras parades.

The apartment is half of a big, 1915 double (two stories, not a shotgun). It's fully independent and well-stocked. The kitchen is equipped with oven, dishwasher, coffee-maker, blender, toaster, and a washer/drier. The two bedrooms upstairs are separated by a hallway and bathroom with clawfoot tub/shower. There's a queen bed in one bedroom and a full bed (fine for two) in the other bedroom. For additional guests we have a good full-size air mattress and a sofa bed. Also a Pack 'N Play for families with young children.

It's a quiet block at night. The nearest bar, Tracey's, is two blocks up the street. The front porch is great for relaxing and people watching.

A shanty-style covered area in the back yard is yours to enjoy, with charcoal and gas grills and a cedar fence for privacy.

We live in the other half of the house (the walls are thick) and will stay well out of your way, but we're always happy to share our local knowledge on all things New Orleans. The apartment has wireless internet and streaming Netflix, Hulu Plus, etc. and local TV stations on a 48" flat screen. All linens and essentials (soap, shampoo, coffee, etc.) are provided.

The house is just two miles from the French Quarter. It's a 12-minute bus ride to Canal Street, an even shorter cab or Uber ride, or a long walk through the Lower Garden District, past the National World War II Museum and the Arts/Warehouse District. The Morial Convention Center is a little more than a mile from the house and easily accessible.

Very New Orleans

  • 4 of 5

The house had that nostalgic N.O. vibe, and our hosts were perfect - unobtrusive, but available and friendly. Hanging out on the front porch was great. Even the neighbors were friendly. We've stayed in old garden district homes before, so knew the landscape of old home expectations. (if you're short, the shower/tub are difficult to navigate, and air conditioners are noisy, etc.) Loved the décor, slightly crazy art and photography. Many thanks.

Lovely home in an beautiful neighborhood!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 5 nights over Easter and really loved the place. John and Katie are perfect hosts and have put a lot of thought into the amenities of the house, from the basics to several small touches (the bottled water in the fridge was a lifesaver!) that added to the comfort of the home. They truly want you to enjoy your stay! The house is on a bus line that takes you down Magazine St., all the way to the zoo in one direction or the other direction goes straight to the lower edge of the French Quarter and Canal St. It's 2 blocks away from another bus line that takes you to the top of the Quarter (Rampart St. and beyond), and a 5 block scenic walk to the St. Charles streetcar. (We chose not to rent a car so the close proximity of public transportation was important to us). There are several food options within walking distance, and a bar a few blocks down that was usually pretty busy that also served some good food. It's a very quiet neighborhood with block after block of beautiful mansions and gardens. Close enough to the craziness of downtown but a wonderful retreat when you'd had enough! Very relaxing to sit on the shady front porch with a cool beverage in hand just watching the world go by. If we ever get back to NOLA this will be the place we stay.

Lovely and safe area!

  • 5 of 5

We loved it! The home had so many of the original features. Sitting out in the front porch after a long day was one of our favorite things to do. John was a great host. Anything we needed was a text away! We would love to come back! Bedrooms and bathroom are upstairs and a challenge if you have a disability. Overall we had a fabulous stay!

We Loved this place!

  • 5 of 5

The two bedroom house was a great find in a perfect location for our first trip to New Orleans. The owner is very nice and is always available to help with good information. There were bikes that we could ride around to see the sites, which we loved taking advantage of. The bus to get to all of the "must sees" runs right in front of the house and this made it so easy to get around, without having to uber everywhere. The porch is so nice, I think we spent most of our time enjoying the sites of the beautiful Garden District from there. We would definitely be back and we can't wait!

What a great place!

We never give five stars. Five stars would mean perfection right? Is this house perfect. No; but it is so cool we had to give it a five. Close to very cool bars, shops and everything else. The host are very cool and helpful.

The house was cozy with everything you need!

  • 4 of 5

John was a lovely host. The home is close to bars, restaurants and a great Po-boy shop right next door. It’s about a $15 cab ride to Canal St in the Quarter. Beautiful Garden District location!!! Would stay here here again.
