About Stephen Gates
Family of four, Steve an attorney and business owner, Perihan owns her own business as well and two sons, Aydin (17) and Koray (13).
Stephen Gates purchased this House in 2006
Why Stephen Gates chose Ranchos de Taos
We were simply awestruck by the beauty seen from the homesite. We've never been in a place with such varied and magnificent views and with sunsets and rainbows like we've never known. They call New Mexico the land of enchantment and being up on this mountainside looking down to the valley below and mountains around us is exactly what the brochures claim, as hard as that may be to believe. Enchanting is the correct word.
What makes this House unique
Odd as it may sound, we have a lot of birds here even though it's a dryer kind of forest (pinon and juniper) with some sagebrush. We do have a water feature, an orchard and some special plantings for birds, so we end up with nesting Mountain Bluebirds, Towhees, Hummingbirds and a wide variety of other birds large and small. Our floor to ceiling windows in the dining room give a real birds-eye view (sorry, couldn't help myself) of their shenanigans.

Perfect spot for a family vacation
Lots of space for 4 adults and 2 eleven year olds with different areas in the house if you wanted some quiet. Well equipped. Loved the fire pit and outdoor patio with wonderful views of the desert and mountains. Games for the kids and a great selection of books for everyone. Highly recommend.
Great for Family
This is a really nice house, well equipped. Perfect setup for parents with kids on one side of the house, and we were on the opposite side of the house (We're the grandparents!). We enjoyed the outdoor fire pit, and the picnic area. Lot's of land for the kids to play. Easy use of the barbecue. Nice also that it has internet, apple TV, etc. Would stay here again!
Family Friendly, Amazing Views
If you're like me and loved summer road trips where you drove into the country and visited distant family members, sometimes crashing on the couch for a couple of nights and tried not to judge the funky art, well this house is for you! Just add in lots of space, extensive book collection, games, your own well stocked kitchen, tremendous patio space and jaw dropping views. With 4 living spaces and outdoor spaces, we all spread out and totally relaxed.
Like when you visit family, the place was clean and tidy, but a little worn in a few spots. We're an active group so we get how a house like this has been used for staging adventures - I like that it wasn't precious and had personality. We were 6 - 3 generations - and spent most of our time visiting Taos, river rafting (Far Flung Adventures) and soaking in hotsprings (Black Rock & Ojo Caliente).
If you go in summer, it's a real treat to watch the monsoons develop over the Rio Grande Gorge ...from the backyard.
Pro tip: be sure to read the owner's binder and bring coffee.
Great place for family vacation!
The house has everything you need. Tons of games for the kiddos to play. Plenty of toiletries, many spices and even a coffee grinder!
Beautiful views and lots of outside space.
A nice big tv and blue tooth speakers.
Sadly, we were exhausted after a day of skiing that we didn’t get to enjoy the beautiful space.
Beautiful, private house outside of town but close enough to be convenient.
We loved this place. It is in a beautiful setting, very private, very comfortable. Had everything we would need. Great and unusual book selection, many about New Mexico, that led us to some remarkable off the beaten path adventures. Very quiet....just the sounds of birds singing. Great location for launching off to the many fascinating places that are an easy day trip from the house. Would definitely stay here again, if ever in the area.
Terrific Location, House and Landlord
This is a very beautiful southwestern home with plenty of space. The location is remote, but they do have internet and dish TV if you want to use it. Several seating areas inside and outside the home. The landlord was very nice, very professional and helpful throughout the entire process. I recommend this large location if you are interested in staying in the Taos' area. You are about 10 to 15 minutes from town.
Taos is a place where cultures, history & art converge within a landscape of spectacular beauty.
Taos has so many activities to choose from including a visit to the World Heritage Site of Taos Pueblo, a tour of the unique architecture of historic Taos around the 200 year old plaza, and many galleries, shops and restaurants. Come and celebrate the 100 years of the Taos Art Society that drew artists to this mecca and explore the hikes, day trips and family fun that abound.
You will find many resources, trip ideas and much more at Taos.org.
