About Stephen Gates
Family of four, Steve an attorney and business owner, Perihan owns her own business as well and two sons, Aydin (17) and Koray (13).
Stephen Gates purchased this House in 2006
Why Stephen Gates chose Ranchos de Taos
We were simply awestruck by the beauty seen from the homesite. We've never been in a place with such varied and magnificent views and with sunsets and rainbows like we've never known. They call New Mexico the land of enchantment and being up on this mountainside looking down to the valley below and mountains around us is exactly what the brochures claim, as hard as that may be to believe. Enchanting is the correct word.
What makes this House unique
Odd as it may sound, we have a lot of birds here even though it's a dryer kind of forest (pinon and juniper) with some sagebrush. We do have a water feature, an orchard and some special plantings for birds, so we end up with nesting Mountain Bluebirds, Towhees, Hummingbirds and a wide variety of other birds large and small. Our floor to ceiling windows in the dining room give a real birds-eye view (sorry, couldn't help myself) of their shenanigans.

Great place for family vacation!
The house has everything you need. Tons of games for the kiddos to play. Plenty of toiletries, many spices and even a coffee grinder!
Beautiful views and lots of outside space.
A nice big tv and blue tooth speakers.
Sadly, we were exhausted after a day of skiing that we didn’t get to enjoy the beautiful space.
Beautiful, private house outside of town but close enough to be convenient.
We loved this place. It is in a beautiful setting, very private, very comfortable. Had everything we would need. Great and unusual book selection, many about New Mexico, that led us to some remarkable off the beaten path adventures. Very quiet....just the sounds of birds singing. Great location for launching off to the many fascinating places that are an easy day trip from the house. Would definitely stay here again, if ever in the area.
Terrific Location, House and Landlord
This is a very beautiful southwestern home with plenty of space. The location is remote, but they do have internet and dish TV if you want to use it. Several seating areas inside and outside the home. The landlord was very nice, very professional and helpful throughout the entire process. I recommend this large location if you are interested in staying in the Taos' area. You are about 10 to 15 minutes from town.
The house was fantastic. We loved that it was out in the country but not far from town. It was plenty spacious inside for the 8 of us, and the outside areas were great. The owner was extremely accommodating and communication was quick and easy. Highly recommended, especially to those looking to get away from the busyness of town and who wants to enjoy the peace and quiet (so quiet), the birds, the views, the sunsets, sunrises and the stars. Hope to make it back one day.
Second year in a row
My family and I take an annual ski trip to Taos, and this has become our "place". The views out all the windows are spectacular. It is about a 10 minute drive to Taos, and a 30 minute drive to Angel Fire Ski resort (for the record I think Angel Fire Ski Resort is MUCH BETTER than Taos Ski Valley). This home is a great place to congregate, relax, and enjoy good company. We're considering making a summer trip as well this year to enjoy the outdoor adventures--should we decide to, I have no doubt this is where we'll stay. Always a pleasure, and unique little treasure.
This home was perfect for our large family of 11 (5 were kids) to gather during the Holiday season. We were thrilled to see that there was snow at the house! Lots of it! And since the home is on larger acreage there was so much to explore on the property and so much snow to play in. This home is on a private drive on a mesa which provides AMAZING views. Mountain views one way, valley views another and we could see Taos city lights at night when standing on the driveway. It seems like there are no neighboring homes because all the surrounding properties are large and the homes are camouflaged NM style. The home is stocked with all household essentials, the kitchen has just about everything. Our favorite room was the dining/ family room area to sit and drink coffee while watching the sunrise. There really are a lot of birds attracted to this property, while the owner supplies them with bird seed and let us know that we can put some of it out as well. It was cool to watch them through the beautiful floor to ceiling windows (which aren’t in the photos in VBRO). The large dining table was great for playing games! It’s also nice that there was a “mud hall” at the entry for hanging coats and stowing snow boots. There are really three areas in the home with seating areas – like three family rooms, it makes for lots of different gathering places for family to either be together or have time by themselves. Perfectly located, very easy access to the 518 which leads to “the sled hill” and Sipapu ski resort I think its about 23 minute drive to the sledding and 34 mins from skiing... Smiths grocery store has everything and is only about 10 minutes away. We bought sleds at Big Five Sports, although the owner left one for us to use. The owner was great to deal with and gave us a tour of the home. The home is as pictured but better! So glad we rented this home and if we ever go back to New Mexico Taos area we would want to stay here again.
