Summer Retreat - Cozy Mountain Cabin on Five Beautiful, Wooded Acres

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,400 sq ft
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom Cabin On 5 Acres In Natural Forest

Welcome to our “Cabin in the Woods” located on five rural acres in beautiful Divide, Colorado!

This cabin can comfortably sleep a maximum of 5 people.

From the moment you enter through the secure iron gate and drive down the winding driveway to the cabin the peace and tranquility of the area will settle upon you like a blanket. The gentle wind blowing through the grove of Aspens and fir trees whispers a sweet “Velkommen”!

I was born and raised in Hammerfest, Norway, known as the northernmost town in the world! There the winters were long, dark and extremely cold. The summers were short, lasting perhaps 4-6 weeks, but balmy and brightened by the Midnight Sun. After immigrating to the United States I missed the mountains and scenery of my homeland, which is why I love living in Colorado so much! The majestic views of Pikes Peak and the Rockies remind me of my childhood home.

When you enter our cabin you will notice the beautiful natural hickory hardwood floors on the main level as well as rustic décor and touches throughout. The living area has a comfortable leather recliner/rocker and sofa. There is a 46” HD flat screen TV and cable programming offered by DirecTV as well as a Blue Ray DVD player. Enjoy a cozy fire in the convenient gas fireplace.

The dining table seats six people when the extra leaf is used. Additional seating is provided by four barstools at the kitchen counter.

The kitchen is stocked with dishes, glassware, flatware, pots & pans, etc. Besides the glass top electric stove, refrigerator and dishwasher you will also find smaller appliances such as a hand mixer, waffle iron, blender, rice cooker and coffee maker.

The master bedroom is located on the main level and features a comfortable king-sized bed. There is a 40” HD flat screen TV with DVD player in this bedroom for your enjoyment.

The full bathroom on the main floor is located just outside of the master bedroom and offers a tub/shower combination, sink vanity and toilet. Just beyond the bathroom is a laundry closet where a full-sized washer and dryer are available for your convenience.

Upstairs you will find the second bedroom, which features a queen-sized bed. Also located on the upper level, the third bedroom has a twin sized bed. The bathroom on the upper level has a shower, sink vanity and toilet.

All bedrooms are furnished with quality linens and bedding and the bathrooms are stocked with soft bath towels, hand towels and washcloths. Each bathroom has a hair dryer provided, and you will find an iron & ironing board in the laundry closet.

Outside there is a spacious wrap around deck where you can enjoy your meals “al fresco” or your morning coffee while soaking in the beauty of the natural surroundings. There is a propane grill on the deck for your use if you wish to grill your dinner.

The cabin is located on 5 acres of forestland covered with mostly Aspen trees, wild flowers and all natural vegetation and tall grasses. Grasses and wildflowers and other "natural" vegetation grow in wild profusion and provide food and shelter for the abundant wildlife in the area. We hope our guests will enjoy the cabin, the natural vegetation and forest life and setting so totally different from life in the city.

There is so much to experience and enjoy at our Cabin in the Woods! The Aspen trees on our acreage remind me so much of my childhood home in Norway. Here my wife and two children take long exciting “nature walks”. We thoroughly love exploring our own land as well as nearby national forest. Wildlife abounds everywhere. We often see deer, some accompanied by their newborn fawns. There are elk, foxes, rabbits and occasionally we might see a mother bear with her cubs! Majestic eagles soar, as well as hawks, owls, songbirds and humming birds.

You will be within easy distance of many attractions in and around Colorado Springs, the old historic Cripple Creek, the majestic 14.115 ft. Pikes Peak and enjoy fishing in crystal clear mountain lakes and streams. I once took the cogwheel train from Manitou Springs up to the dizzying heights of Pikes Peak, where Katharine Lee Bates in 1893 received her inspiration to write the song America the Beautiful. You can also drive to the top of the mountain for a modest fee - that is if you are not too faint of heart!

Finally toward evening as the glorious Colorado sun sets, come home to your Cabin in the Woods and enjoy a family meal on the spacious deck. Here feel the cooling breezes of approaching evening rustling the leaves of the Aspen trees, watch families of deer come close to your private gathering, and watch hummingbirds hovering close and hear song birds serenade. Be sure to have your camera ready. You might just get pictures you will treasure for years to come.

Our children (7 and 4 years old) cavort outdoors from early till late. They catch butterflies, pick wildflowers for their mom and wonder in amazement over dragonflies, grasshoppers, caterpillars, huge tiger moths, and smaller moths and butterflies with wings of every hue. This last summer they found many bird’s nests, including a humming bird nest with the mother bird tending her tiny eggs. Many educational hours were spent spying on hatching birds, bunny babies and other wild creatures!

If you enjoy unspoiled nature, fresh mountain air, privacy and a chance to “get away from it all”, this is the place for you!

About Valerie

Norway is my native country. I was born and raised in Hammerfest, Norway, known as the northernmost town in the world! My favorite pastime was skiing in the winter and trout and salmon fishing in the brief summers.

I came to the USA as a teenage emigrant, crossing the border at a check point between the USA and Canada Christmas eve 1957. I consider that the best Christmas gift I ever received!

For many years I lived in the flatlands but always dreaming of being able to make my home in Colorado. The opportunity came in 1977 when I came to Denver to do graduate studies.

Valerie purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Valerie chose Divide

My wife and I first bought mountain property at Grand Lake, CO near Winter Park. How we loved and enjoyed our weekends and summers at that place! However, after several years in Grand Lake we decided to migrate south…about 150 miles. So we purchased Cabin in the Woods in Divide, Colorado on 5 acres of aspen, evergreens and a meadow covered in wildflowers.

Part of the reason we bought Cabin in the Woods is its proximity to many attractions in and around Colorado Springs, historic Cripple Creek, majestic Pikes Peak and fishing in crystal clear lakes and streams.

What makes this cabin unique

There is so much for us to experience and enjoy here! The aspen trees remind me of my childhood home in Norway. My wife and two children take long exciting “nature walks”. exploring our own land as well as nearby national forest. Wildlife abounds everywhere. There are deer, some accompanied by their newborn fawns. We see elk, foxes, bunnies and occasionally a mother bear with her cubs! Majestic eagles soar, along with hawks, owls, songbirds, and humming birds.

Our children, - 7 and 4 years old love to cavort outdoors from early till late. They catch butterflies, pick wildflowers for their mom and wonder in amazement over dragonflies, grasshoppers, caterpillars, huge tiger moths and butterflies with wings of every hue.

We know that you will love our Cabin in the Woods as much as my family and I!

Peaceful getaway in the woods.

  • 5 of 5

The location is absolutely beautiful. The property, if you are looking for a getaway in the woods, with Aspen trees and evergreens, with the occasional car driving by ( the cabin sits approx. 100 yards from the street ) and absolute silence in the middle of the night, then this is the answer. Beautiful property, not a single piece of litter did I see while walking through the trees, nor did I run into a single spider web on my walks. As a matter of fact, the whole area of Divide was really clean. Hearing the wind blow through the Aspens is a healthful remedy for the soul. The Cabin had everything we could need, including Directv. The cold and cool nights were awesome, the days were mild and very comfortable, we did not turn on the A/C one time during our week long stay. The mountains, the terrain, the Deer, just the awe inspiring beauty of this region is worth the drive from southeast Texas. There are 3 or 4 small towns between Divide and Colorado Springs that will have everything you need. The Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, the Royal Gorge area, must see. If you are driving up 25 North through Pueblo, don’t be disappointed, the scenery past Pueblo will soon change. Once you get into Colorado Springs and head West on 24, your expectations will be met with outstanding views of the Rocky Mountains, stunning majestic views of one of the most beautiful places on earth. Respect your neighbors and the clearly marked boundaries, pick up after your pets and leave the Cabin in the Woods as clean or cleaner than you found it.

Wonderful! Just as advertised.

  • 5 of 5

We had a great experience staying at The Cabin in the Woods. It is truly a restful spot, surrounded by aspens - the reality is better than the pictures. The care shown by the owners is evident everywhere inside, with better instructions/info/labeling/recommendations than I have ever encountered with a rental property. Communication with Valerie was top notch. We would love to come back. My specific recommendations are to bring along some outdoor gear (balls, Frisbees, etc) so you have stuff to play with outside and to be aware that the main TV is regular DVD, not Blu-Ray (the Blu-Ray player is in the master bedroom). Fully equipped kitchen lacks nothing. Since you are responsible for removing garbage to the city facility, please note the daytime hours - you may have to get rid of your garbage the day before if you plan on leaving early as we had to. Rent this wonderful place with confidence!

A Christmas to Remember at Cabin in the Woods!

  • 5 of 5

Following a grueling 8 hour drive, we were greeted by the warmest and most wonderful cabin! It was apparent the owner loves and cares very much for this property and wanted to maximize our experience in this well maintained and spotless cabin. A beautifully decorated Christmas Tree and holiday décor set the mood and we were off! Every possible need that could arise was met. Instructions to operate various devices were conveniently placed throughout. I spent hours on the deck just looking out at the woods surrounding the cabin and the deer families that came regularly to visit. What a get-away! I left a piece of my heart at Cabin in the Woods and hope to return soon. Thank you for making this a Christmas I will always remember!

Nice get away. Too many rules. Attempts to change agreement after arrival.

  • 3 of 5

Comfortable beds, well stocked kitchen, wild life nearly in arms reach, a perfect location for Thanksgiving with my wife and adult children. The 5 of us, plus a dog, had a fantastic time and felt very welcome in this cabin in the woods. A very well kept cabin and relatively easy to find plus owners provided very detailed directions. Food & Spirits close by, lots of activities close by, and great home base for a get away from the stress of work, traffic, and city.

I would have given 5 stars but after having been contacted after arrival to take trash to local drop off for a small fee or I would be deducted from deposit at 10 x the fee left me with a bitter disposition regarding the owners since it was not part of the original agreement and I did not want to take time away from my family to do trash run when it should be part of house keeping duties. Worked out in the end but still stuck with me through duration of stay. Lots of rules to follow but nothing most normal ADULTS should worry about. Deer, Elk, and wonderful sunsets shared with my family made it worth every penny.

Owner's Response: Hi Jeff, thanks for the review. The owner of the cabin decided to ask guests to take care of their trash disposal at the end of their visits because there were instances from past guests who left mountains of trash behind for the owner to dispose of. After informing you of his decision we realized that since we had not informed you of the rule when you booked the property we should waive the requirement in your case. That is why we agreed that you did not need to worry about taking your trash to the dump. The "rules' you mention are as a result of past situations with guests or to protect the property or to prevent disturbances from the neighbors. You wouldn't imagine that a guest would decide to bring an ATV to ride around the beautiful environment around the cabin resulting in tearing up the grounds (thus the "No ATV, etc" rule), or unsupervised kids being allowed to trespass upon the neighbors property and having to be told to go away (thus the "Please respect our neighbors boundaries" rule). Generally speaking, as you said most of the "rules" are common sense things that reasonable people would understand. Thanks again for your visit and Merry Christmas.

The family and I had a great time at cabin in the woods !

  • 5 of 5

The home was very clean and relaxing. Great setting out in the country but close enough to town so that it isn't a long drive to town. Saw many deer in the evenings, we all enjoyed that. We gad a great time there.

Good location, responsive owners, well equipped, not as clean as I would have expected

  • 3 of 5

This was our first VRBO and trip to Colorado. The house location worked well for us. We enjoyed the privacy, easy of access, and the wildlife. The house was well equipped and met our needs pretty well. The owners were very responsive with any questions I had. We did have an issue with a shower handle that was not functioning correctly, but was a small inconvenience. The only disappointing thing about the property was the cleanliness of the place when we arrived. There was significant dust, pet, and people hair in every room.
