Great block island getaway!
We had such a nice time staying at the snake harbor house! It had plenty of space and was perfect for our long weekend retreat.
Relaxing - worth a repeat visit!
I was thrilled to be able to stay at Snave for a second time in Oct 2015. My husband and I stayed to celebrate our wedding anniversary in Sept 2013 and had a wonderful relaxing time. We rented a moped and traveled all over the island. In talking with the owner, she recommended a fabulous restaurant "Harry's" which is now closed but the new restaurant is wonderful as well. We stayed off season so we were prepared for all types of weather but it was warm and beautiful that weekend. It happened to be the Taste of Block Island weekend so there were special events which was a nice surprise. We stayed in the downstairs bedroom with the attached bathroom and laundry. The bed was comfortable, and the peace & quiet of the area made for a sound sleep. The house was meticulously clean with a full kitchen for cooking - spotless appliances - comfortable TV room and GORGEOUS front porch.
The weather for my 10/16/15 visit was much cooler as expected for that time of year so I came prepared with warm clothes. It was the perfect place to kick off a yoga retreat with friends. For this stay, I slept in one of the twin beds upstairs and although the wind was howling, the cozy comforters provided kept me warm and I slept straight through until sunrise. We were fortunate to have a beautiful sunny day both for the Saturday yoga retreat as well as a hike Sunday before boarding the ferry back home.
I would highly recommend Snave to any size family/group of friends. The owners are kind and attentive and obviously love the house a great deal.
Girls Getaway late in the Season
What a delightful place for old high school friends to have a reunion, now our third! Late in the season, late September, so a tad chilly on BI. However, the downstairs heater sent the heat rising just enough for all 5 of us ladies to sleep comfortably. The kitchen was fabulous for preparing a healthy dinner upon arrival (we brought salad mixings and a chicken, just in case, not knowing what would still be open, late in the season remember!) The outdoor shower is big enough to be very comfortable! For an antique home it had all the comforts and certainly the VIEWS WERE OUTSTANDING from the porch and what a wonderful porch for morning coffee! The SNAVE house is truly a home, and island home! We loved it and the owners! Same time next year! or maybe a tad earlier.......
Horrible Stay, Do Not Recommend
My friend and I rented the Snave House last-minute as our on-island friend just had a baby. I vacation in BI often (I had gotten married there), and my friend grew up going there every summer. We know what to expect out of BI antique rentals: simplicity, charm and not usually a ton of bells and whistles (I myself own a home from the 1800s - I love antiques).
A couple of days before our arrival, my friend's infant came down with diarrhea with a fever, and as so often happens with little babies in this situation, we did not know whether this would be a 24 hour bug or something more. I had called the owner asking that if we weren't able to make it up, whether we could have our money refunded. She responded she'd keep a $200 fee and return us the remaining $1,000 for our stay. I didn't think this to be so unreasonable, though the fee a bit unncessary considering the house would have sat vacant anyway. Fortunately, my friend's son only had a virus and it went away in a couple of days.
When we arrived at the house, we were taken aback by the state of the house. There was wallpaper ripping off the walls, a strong smell of must/mold in the air, thick layers of dust covering the fans, stains on the mattresses, and feces in the downstairs toilet that wouldn't initially flush. The nephew of the owner came over (unannounced-we had no idea who he was) to show us how to operate the shower appropriately because the door to the shower was broken. Half the light fixtures didn't even have lightbulbs in them. The mattresses were the most uncomfortable that we had ever slept on! And the sheets that I was provided with to sleep on mine were much too small. Lastly, one would think that if you are renting an old house in late spring (expensively, too), you would have the means to keep it warm considering there is little insulation in the walls. The upstairs heaters were broken, which left the 2 rooms our babies slept in freezing. The landlord's solution was to jack up the heat downstairs (it was a cold night in the low 40s), which left the rooms not that much warmer upstairs and the downstairs in the 80s in the a.m. She offered a space heater for the next day - but which baby's room would get the heater? A realtor friend found us another place to stay and the Snave House landlord refused to refund us for the remaining 2 nights, despite explaining to her why frigid rooms at night and babies are an issue (never mind all the other issues we encountered). Renters beware!
My family really enjoyed our week's stay at Snave. It is secluded enough to offer privacy for a family, yet close to town and the beaches. The new appliances and updated kitchen and bathroom were an added bonus to the comfort of an older home. I was also pleasantly surprised to see there was Direct TV and a gas grill. I was fortunate to get the downstairs bedroom, which seemed to have had the softest mattress in the house. The hardness of the mattresses was my family's only complaint. It was WONDERFUL having the luxury of a washer and dryer, especially with a young child. Great place. I would highly recommend this house.
