Overview

About the property

Modern and clean 2 bedroom, 2 bath with additional bonus area

An extraordinary tropical experience awaits you on the Big Island! Located on the Eastern side of the Big Island is The Jewel Box, a striking resort-style house newly remodeled with your comfort and luxury in mind. You'll find beautiful hardwood floors, white shaker style cabinets, silestone counters and Dahl tiles throughout. Ceiling fans and tradewinds cool every room, while floor to ceiling windows feature amazing ocean views. Sit back and enjoy the relaxing tranquility on three separate lanais, one on each level. Decorated in vintage Hawaiiana and modern conveniences, The Jewel Box has every comfort you would expect and enjoy.

Main Level:

The main floor features an open concept kitchen, dining area and living room, plus bedroom and adjoining full bath with a large tiled shower. A full covered lanai runs the full length of the house with lounge chairs and dining area. The kitchen is well equipped with full sized refrigerator/freezer, gas stove, dishwasher, microwave, as well as complete cookware and dining settings. The living room has a flat screen TV with satellite dish, DVD player and Apple TV. Free WiFi internet access is also provided.

Top Level:

The 3rd level is a master suite and full bathroom with shower and a private deck with lounge chairs and a sweeping view of the ocean.

Lower Level:

Walk outside, down garden path, and you will find a bonus room with its own lanai with lounge chairs and a grill. This room features a futon for additional guests.

Local Attractions:

The Jewel Box is located in the Puna District. This area on the eastern shore stretches from the ocean to the 4,000 foot summit of Kilauea volcano.

.

A few blocks out the front door is the Red road, one of the most scenic and renowned drives in all of Hawaii, featuring black sand beaches, dense rainforest, and Ahalanui Park (a spring warmed by the volcano's steam). Along this 12 mile drive are a number of beach parks including Waiopae tidepools with some of the most incredible snorkeling on the island.

A short walk from The Jewel Box is Kehena Beach, a secluded (clothing optional) black sand beach hidden from view from the roadway. Enjoy yoga and many other classes offered at nearby Kalani Resort. Two miles away is Uncle Roberts, a night market, which hosts live music, food stalls, handcraft exhibition, and a bazaar-style market every Wednesday night.

Nearby is Pahoa, an old mill town with a row of clapboard shops along a boardwalk, local restaurants and a bakery. During the weekend, the Pahoa Makuu Farmers Market features fresh fruit, roasted macadamia nuts, food stalls and local art.

A short drive is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Volcano Village, a charming rainforest town known for its glass blowing and art galleries. The surrounding rainforest is in sharp contrast to the steam vents and rugged landscapes of the nearby park.

On Puna's Eastern point is the Cape Kumukahi area with scenic hiking. The air here is measured to be the freshest in the world. From Cape Kumukahi, hike a little over a mile along the 1960's lava flows to Kapoho Bay, a local swimming hole and beach geothermally heated by the Kilauea volcano.

The Jewel Box is about 35 minutes away from the Hilo Airport.

If you want a relaxing vacation close to the volcano, this is it!

  • 4 of 5

The pictures do not do this house justice. It is absolutely stunning. We spent 7days here and didn't leave the house on 3 of those days because it was so enjoyable to just relax, eat and drink on the balcony overlooking the waves. It is 3 miles from a bike rental location where you can rent a bike and travel 4 miles to see active lava flow into the ocean and down the volcano.

If the house had new screens I would have rated it a 5. Some of the screens on the windows and doors need some minor repairs to keep the bugs out at night. Just be aware that you are in the tropics where bugs like to live and are very attracted to lights at night time. During the day, we had zero issues with the bugs.

Owner's Response: Mahalo for your review Kevin the screens are being repaired. Having homes right on the water in Hawaii takes it's toll on aluminum screens. We do our best to keep up on them. We hope you will come back someday. Kind Regards, Jamie

Amazing

  • 5 of 5

The place is amazing and nice. It had everything you could need. I was surprised to find a yoga mat as well--something I considered packing but didn't--doing yoga on the deck in the morning sunrise became one jewel of my stay. Another, of course, was walking down to the beach and swimming. The sights, the sounds and the smells were particularly absorbable in this location on the ocean--I sat for many hours watching the waves dance, meditating, smelling the plumeria in the yard and not wanting to leave the house. Going to sleep hearing the waves break and seeing the moonlight over the ocean really made my dreams this vacation. Also, Jamie and Robert were extremely helpful. Thank you very much!

5 perfect days

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 wonderful nights at the Jewel Box last week. The house is beautifully decorated with 3 levels that look right out at the ocean. Evenings with the patio doors open listening to the crashing waves made for some of the most restful sleep I've had in ages! The house had everything we needed: Comfy furniture, lots of great kitchen gadgets, spices and accessories (toaster, blender, coffee maker). We couldn't have been happier with this house to explore this side of the big island! Hoping to return one day

Wonderful location near the volcano!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful ocean views were excellent every day. Neighborhood was quiet and well landscaped. Black sand beach was close by but difficult to access. Had wished there were beach chairs provided. Uncle Roberts market was close by, Wednesday nights have entertainment and food not to be missed.

So Beautiful We Didn't Want to Leave!

  • 5 of 5

If you want to stay at the most perfect house in the area this is it! The house is absolutely gorgeous. It is perfect especially for two couples who are vacationing together since there are 2 master suites. (If you're splitting the bill no one would feel like they are drawing the short stick) It has everything you could possibly need. The kitchen is well equipped, the linens are lovely, the washer/dryer are top of the line, and there are all the little extras like binoculars, water shoes, really nice beach towels, bathrobes & slippers. When we drove around the area we honestly could not find a house like it. It's located in such a beautiful area with a view of the ocean that never grows old! If you are not used to the "hippie" community you may be taken aback a bit. They live in vans & tents all over the area, so lock up. Shop in Hilo before you get there since the stores are Pahoa are quite interesting & the crowd very colorful.

We loved this house so much we stayed an extra night. We care for homes as a living and are very picky about cleanness & decor. We were very impressed. Jamie was a dream to deal with! The house has a lockbox with the key for easy check in/check out availability. Jamie is available by phone or email at all times & was quick to respond when we had inquiries. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Dream Vacation

  • 5 of 5

I saved every last penny I could so that my husband and I could stay in this gorgeous home. And it is entirely worth every last penny saved. The photos almost don't do it enough justice. Every morning we woke up to the sound of the ocean. The views are incredible. The house was clean, welcoming, beautifully decorated and had everything we needed. The nearest town is a bit of a drive to grab groceries, so I recommend stocking up before you arrive. The neighborhood is quiet and remote. We truly loved our stay here, and we look back on our time spent at this home so fondly. It almost feels like a dream, and that we didn't actually stay there! Especially now that we have lost a family member and another has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. We are so fortunate that we had that time spent in paradise. I hope that we can return one day! If you are on the fence about this property, don't be. You won't regret it!

Located on the wild and scenic Puna coastline, close to geothermally heated warm ponds, the Waiopae tidepools for fantastic snorkeling, Lava Tree Park, Volcano National Park, lava flow viewing only 5 minutes away (when flowing), Pohoiki Boat launch and surfing/boogieboarding spot, ocean fishing, plus walk to Kehena Black Sand beach for optional nude sun bathing. Yoga and other classes offered at nearby Kalani Resort. Also just a few minutes to Kalapana and Wednesday night Uncle Robert's fun night, Farmer's Markets and a few minutes to the quaint, colorful village of Pahoa for many restaurants, banks, and shopping. About 45 minute drive to the city of Hilo, waterfalls, botanical gardens, ziplines, etc.

Note: As of 10/2014, there is a lava flow slowly advancing towards Pahoa. This could be a once in a lifetime chance to witness a change in the Hawaii landscape, if the lava advances into the town. There is a possibility that the highway 130 could be covered by the lava. The County has already built several alternate contingency routes - good gravel roads for travel to and from the Puna area, if needed. The car rental companies will allow rental cars to use these roads.
