About Susan Fowler

Live and work in Northern Idaho. Our Honeymoon was in Placencia. We fell in love with Belize and Placencia in particular. 20 years later and through a near complete destruction by hurricane, we continue to feel we have one the best locations in Placencia, if not all of Belize. We are avid Scuba/fishing people and we spend every minute of every vacation in Belize and have been doing so since before building our home there.

Susan Fowler purchased this house in 1995

Why Susan Fowler chose Placencia

When we decided to build a home in Placencia we met a local who had the property on which it is now located. Secluded yet located a short {5 minute} walk to all the village has to offer. At that time we were the first to buy property on our island. We worked with local Mennonite community to produce a fully local product.

What makes this house unique

The home is constructed totally of tropical hard woods with a chracter which is unique. Octagon in shape to withstand tropical storms, open floor plan to take advantage of the cool ocean breeze. The 360 view from veranda is stunning with both Ocean and Maya mountain views. Fishing from the dock is literally 5 steps from your front door. Ideal for the Sailor who would like a little harbor time off the hook. Fully protected deep water docking. Power and water available at extra cost. If you have access to private fishing/recreational boat, a 28 ft boat slip will accept craft with a beam of up to 10ft. Watch the boat slip at high tide and enjoy our the seahorses trolling the ocean vegetation at the edge of the seawall. You will likely see the iguanas sunning on the dock and a tree located just adjacent to the boat slip is their favorite morning perch.

Fisherman or diver, sailor, or lubber, seeking excitement, or just a relaxing spot to unwind, our property offers it. For the adventurous we can provide contact information {or arrange booking} for diving/caving/ruins/fishing/or jungle adventures. With 20 years of experience we have the ability to provide the best guide for your particular recreational interests.

As you will see, we offer a good value. Choose to stay in one of the nearby Condos with the attendant lack of privacy or choose our property for less money. Granted we do not have granite counter tops or hand carved doors. We do have a place all your own with more room for more guests to stay comfortably.

Words can not explain!

This house is fantastic. The owners are fantastic. Placencia is fantastic.

The ocean breeze filled the house continually! The boat trip accross the canal was so unique. Walking to and from the village was an experience everyday.

The bed was super comfy.. The kitchen fully stocked.. The upstairs and downstairs decks overlooked the canal for a great resting place! Watching the boat traffic on the canal was amazing. This is the right place! Hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did! We will rebook!

Owner's Response: Terry- Appreciate the great review. It was a pleasure meeting you folks. You were great guests and we look forward to seeing you and yours in the future. By the way, that problem light in the kitchen turned out to be a faulty 3- way switch. I am and always will be completely confused by 3-way switches. The electrician will be here in a hour. You WILL have a functioning light there when you return! Thanks for letting us know it was not working properly. J.B.

Great Getaway

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful getaway at Christmas with family! The house is convenient to Placencia Village and a great place to relax and enjoy being together. We did a couple of outings with Alfred and AJ - snorkeling and swimming with the turtles and sharks and the Monkey River jungle excursion. Saw manatees, dolphins, howler monkeys and lots of birds; notably the toucan and the frigate. A couple of us kayaked in the lagoon. All was fun. The people in the Village were all very friendly and helpful. Cooked at the house mostly but De Tach and Omar’s Grill were favorite restaurants. We had a great, great time.

Our Vacation at Cap's Inn

  • 5 of 5

My family and I spent a week at Cap's Inn and really enjoyed our vacation. Susan, the owner, is a fantastic communicator and she was very helpful and friendly in giving us advice of things to do and helping if we had questions. Jordan, the property manager, was very helpful during our stay even though we didn't need him much, it was comforting knowing he was there.

The house itself is nicely laid out and was designed well for us - having two teenage kids, we had enough space for everyone and no one felt cramped. This was our first trip to Belize and we learned a lot during our stay. First, it is HOT and HUMID in late July (duh!). Thank goodness the bedrooms at Cap's Inn have A/C because it was truly a lifesaver. Since the house is situated on the lagoon side, you'll use a skiff to paddle to the mainland and either walk or drive to town. It's a very short walk (5-10 minutes) but depending on when you are visiting, it might be better to drive into town. From a security perspective, we felt very safe being on the lagoon and liked the privacy. From a practicality perspective, the novelty of paddling across the lagoon wore off after about 3 days. This was primarily due to the heat and humidity and being totally drenched after barely exerting any effort :)

For those visiting for the first time, I recommend snorkeling at Silk Caye - it was nice boat ride to the Caye and we were able to see nurse sharks, sea turtles, and even a manatee! We also had a guided tour to Cockscomb Basin where we hiked, swam, went tubing, and slid down natural rock slides. The only tour we didn't love was Monkey Village. The ride up the Monkey River was uneventful and the hiking portion of the tour was filled with swarming mosquitos the whole time that made it miserable.

For anyone visiting Placencia, I highly recommend Cap's Inn. It's a great house, located next to the Sail's Inn hotel where you have pool access, and nothing beats sitting on the deck with a nice cold drink!

Owner's Response: We appreciate your review. It was a pleasure working with you and we are pleased you enjoyed your stay. Very good to hear the air conditioning made your stay more comfortable. We just replaced old {noisy} window units with the split unit ones that you used. Sounds like they are getting the job done. Looking forward to working with you in the future should you be returning to Placencia. Susan

A wonderful vacation house in a wonderful location; loved it all!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I rented this terrific house for the months of February and March, 2017. Our son and his wife joined us for two weeks - the house has three bedrooms and three baths, is very spacious and comfortable for all. We spent endless hours on the top deck reading, enjoying the warmth and steady breeze, and watching the boats go up and down the "canal". Using the provided skiff to cross to the "mainland" and back was no problem at all; it is a very short distance and was actually lots of fun. Being across the canal from the mainland also added to our sense of security. The owners had just finished upgrading the air conditioning units in all the bedrooms but we actually used it only three times; just did not need it with the delightful breezes. Bugs were a non-issue. A few tiny "no see-ums" around dawn and dusk but they were really not a problem. We literally never saw a mosquito! The well water was excellent and we drank from the tap from day one. The house is situated conveniently close to Placencia Village but far enough out that there is a sense of privacy and no "town noise". We enjoyed the easy and relatively short walk into town whenever we needed to shop for things. There are several grocery stores to choose from so we never lacked for anything. The village has many great restaurants to choose from and we ate out often. Having the use of the swimming pool next door at the Sailfish Resort was a big plus and we used it frequently.

Susan and JB, the owners, were there during our stay (living in a smaller house behind the one we rented) and they are simply wonderful. They were both exceedingly friendly and helpful in every way. We quickly considered them good friends. We did not need help from the Property Manager, Stefano, but the couple of times we saw him, he was also very friendly and helpful.

We rented a car twice for a week each time to drive to San Ignacio for Mayan Ruin tours and sightseeing; other than that, we felt we did not need to have a rental car. The house included the use of two kayaks which we used often to explore the area. We even saw manatees up close and personal from the kayaks! We also throughly enjoyed our snorkel and dive tours as well as day trips to offshore cayes. The Belizean people are exceedingly friendly and helpful. We felt safe everywhere we went.

In short, it was a fantastic two months and we look forward to returning!

Owner's Response: Dear John and Ceci- Thank you for your nice review. We would also like to thank you for being great guests and even better neighbors! One of the positives in our little enterprise down here, is meeting so many great folks. From time to time it ends up that they become new friends. We feel that way, and hope you two do as well. I promise that the above has nothing to do with the fact that John makes the best Pina Calada in the world! Please stay in touch. We would love to have you here again anytime. Getting to know you was a joy. J.B. and Susan

Great stay in Placencia house!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in Placencia. Stefano was helpful when we arrived, and flexible about some changes in our checkout.

The porches were our favorite part of the house. We spent hours watching boats pass. The kitchen was great for preparing meals we bought locally (fresh fish, fruits, vegetables). The beaches and docks nearby are more secluded than the main beach area in Placencia, which was nice. Highly recommend driving Hummingbird Highway!
