About the property

1 bedroom, 1 bath, spacious living room, near UW/Children's Hospital/UVillage.

Instead of staying in a hotel, consider staying as our guests in our spacious daylight basement apartment. You'll feel right at home! Close to major bus lines and the University of Washington. Our luscious backyard is an urban oasis!

The Space

Our home has a lovely daylight basement apartment with a nice bedroom, kitchenette, 3/4 bathroom, and separate entrance that opens onto an Italian-style piazza. There is a large living room with a sleeper sofa and comfy reading chair. Laundry room is shared. Kitchenette has everything you'll need for cooking away from home. If not, we're just upstairs and happy to share. Plus Trader Joe's and Safeway are within walking distance, and Whole Foods is 3/4 of a mile away.

Located in a great Seattle neighborhood, this unique offering from a University of Washington professor and family is a great opportunity for visiting scholars or graduate students, folks visiting Seattle for a short-term stay, and is ideal for families as the living room has many toys they could use.

The home location is only 5 minute walk from the 45th entrance of U of W, 5 minute drive from Children's Hospital or University Village, 10 minute drive from downtown Seattle and near many major bus lines.

Restaurant options are plentiful! Some of our favorites are Cedar's Mediterranean Restaurant, Delfino's Chicago Style Pizzeria, Tempero do Brasil, Pair, Agua Verde, and Portage Bay Cafe.

Room includes:

- Queen-sized bed with clean linens

- Living room couch has hide-a-bed

- Refrigerator (Freezer has some items from family)

- 3/4 size stove and oven

- Microwave

- Gas BBQ (shared)

- Clean dishes

- WiFi

- Desk & chair

- Large closet and dresser

- Use of washer/dryer

- Hair dryer

About Kristi Gilbert

Currently a stay-at-home mom to three young ones (9, 7, and 4 years old). By trade I'm a high school Spanish teacher. My husband works jointly at the UW in the School of Public Health and at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He does HIV/AIDS vaccine research as a Bio-Statistician.

We've done vacation rentals in the past through craigslist when we've gone on longer vacations/sabbaticals, so thought we'd give this new web site a try as a way to help us pay for piano and ballet lessons and still save something for their college education!

My favorite destinations:

Buenos Aires!

Sevilla, España

Books:

To Kill a Mockingbird

Jane Eyre

Little Women

Count of Monte Cristo

Les Miserables

Blueberries for Sal

Bodas de Sangre by Lorca

Taming of the Shrew

The Catcher and the Rye

Of Mice and Men

Movies: Currently going through a Bollywood craze. 3 Idiots, Lagaan, almost anything with Amir Khan or Shahrukh Khan

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Cool Hand Luke, Street Car Named Desire, Gilda.

Princess Bride

Pedro Almodovar films

Kristi Gilbert purchased this house in 2006

Why Kristi Gilbert chose Seattle

We weren't even in the market to buy a house, but the Estate Sale drew me in, then the lush walkway and spectacular backyard design and flora impressed me but the daylight basement that filled with light made me ask to see the rest of the house. Then I drove home and brought my husband to see the house. It's an eclectic neighborhood with young professional families, many that work at the University of Washington, Microsoft, Amazon, or for themselves, plus students, and senior citizens. There is a great sense of community in our neighborhood which is called University Park. Cowan and Ravenna Park provide great play spaces and a great running path through the luscious ravine complete with a babbling brook. A little known treasure that rivals Green Lake in it's charm, but with less people!

What makes this house unique

Urban Oasis

Because of our location next to the UW, many buses are just blocks away. Seattle is very easy to get around on city buses (the 71, 72, 73, 74 take you right downtown). It's about a 5-10 minute walk to the University of Washington or shopping at University Village. University Way, known as "The Ave" is just 4 blocks away and has awesome, economical and diverse restaurants, along with a famous Farmer's Market on Saturdays.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I and my wife stayed at Kristi's and Peter's basement for about three weeks, while looking for a permanent place to move in. Overall, the experience was pretty good: the location is superb for UW and there are lot of restaurants, shops around. With 50$ extra we got to park on the street which was very convenient.

Home is clean and comfortable, bed was good and bathroom as well, kitchen was good enough for us. Internet connection is fast, which was important for us.

Kristi was always very helpful and helped us to get settled.

I'd like to point out that this place is not for light sleepers. There are lot of student houses around and parties going on late in the night. Also, be prepared to wake up early in the morning as the house is full of kids running around :). For families with children, this would be an ideal place to stay.

Amazing and comfortable!

  • 5 of 5

Came to Seattle for the first time with my two younger siblings to visit some friends during summer. This place was amazing!

The owner had everything set to welcome us before the arrival, including a ready and dressed air matress for the third of us, clean and fresh towels, clean dishes, fully equipped kitchen,

parking pass (even though we didn't need it), clear instructions on how to get in, everything nice, clean and organized, etc. I'm sure you get the picture.

The back patio is really nice, with tons of plants naturally decorating the place, shareable between the owners and us, with a big table for outside meals and plenty of room for kids to play.

Also, the neighbors are really nice too! This family is clearly well loved around the place as we got to meet a couple of great people that would come visit the owners, running into them when we're leaving for some city fun.

Location is perfect, with bus stops, grocery store, Walgreens and restaurants a couple of blocks away. Downtown and Seattle Center are only one bus ride away, reason why we didn't even need to rent a car during our 9 day stay.

If you're looking for a nice place to sleep in with a great location, this is most definitely a great choice!

A Perfect Place

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and our Golden Retriever, Holly, spent a month at this spacious U District basement apartment. We had family visiting from time to time and there was always plenty of room. French entry doors provided a light and bright welcome. The kitchen was fully furnished. Queen size bed was extremely comfortable. The backyard with lush gardens provided a great place for Holly to sniff around in. All in all, this was a perfect place for our long Northwest visit.

A fantastic home in the U-District!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for three weeks in this delightful U-District apartment. The apartment was in a great location, within walking distance to interesting shops, restaurants, and bus lines. The apartment is great with everything you need. The hosts are very friendly and helpful. When our hosts found out about my interest in theater, they very knowledgeably suggested several productions around Seattle which we heartily enjoyed! We would stay here again in a heartbeat. The apartment is decorated in a lovely, welcoming style, and we felt very at home. An added bonus is the beautiful garden/terrace area outside, and the garden paths that are bursting with flowers and lush greenery! You feel like you have your own private park right outside your door! Truly lovely and not to be missed!

Just right

  • 5 of 5

This U district apartment was our home for 3 months. Our experience was positive beyond expectation. The walkout apartment is comfy, homey, bright and nicely decorated. Very restful queen bed, sink-into chairs, full kitchen with full size fridge and washer/dryer. Our on-site homeowners are delightful, helpful, caring family. Their three young children are a joy. The neighborhood is close to campus, churches, safe walking routes, parks, shopping and public transportation. An excellent choice.

A loving family when I needed one!

  • 5 of 5

I was in Seattle because my fourteen yr. old daughter was having surgery at SCH. It was stressful and overwhelming. The host family was an answered prayer. They visited my daughter in hospital and welcomed both of us into their family. The apt. is sweet, bright and homey, it's like a hug. they decorated our apt. with Christmas lights and a tree to welcome my daughter home from hospital. This was so much more than a place to stay, it was an answered prayer. We were blessed with true friends who made us feel loved and safe.
