Hana is commonly known as the “Last Hawaiian Place.” Step back into the charm and casual elegance of old Hawai’i in an authentic, meticulously renovated plantation owners home in Hana. Once used to house managers from the sugar cane plantation days, this 1900 home, named Hale Ulu Lulu, underwent a major rebuilding (completed in early 2005 and constantly maintained) and is now completely restored with attention to historic detail, while providing every modern convenience. We have designed an open and airy layout with spectacular ocean and pastoral views from every room. Your eyes will delight on the beautiful Brazilian Mahogany floors, elegantly detailed, vintage style bath with dual-sided claw foot tub (great for romantic baths for two), granite kitchen counters with reclaimed Koa wood bar/counter and trim accents. A sliding panel of framed Tapa cloth between the bedroom and living area allows you to relax in bed to the incredible view or, when closed, to have complete privacy from the rest of the house. The furnishings are classic and comfortable with a Missionary antique and Asian influence. We have designed the cottage with warm tropical colors, original local artwork, Hawaiian antiques and Polynesian exotica. Though the house has a tasteful and elegant décor, you can still put your feet on the furniture and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. You will arrive to rooms filled with brilliant tropical flowers and orchids, 100% cotton, high thread count, quality linens and towels and quality soaps as well as coffee and green tea and fresh fruit to start off your first day with us – fine details on par with the finest luxury hotel at a fraction of comparable prices (really). Hale Ulu Lulu is part of a sprawling two-acre property surrounded by gracious lawns and verdant tropical gardens and foliage. We live on the property and constantly maintain our homes. They are meticulously cared for and we run our business like any fine hotel (sorry, no room service!). Though we usually greet you upon arrival and answer any questions, we leave you completely alone to enjoy your stay.

The Guest Houses at Malanai are named after the gentle cooling breeze , (named Malanai) known for this area of Hana. We are located just three miles south of Hana Town in the Maka’alae district, which is considered the most highly desired area of Hana. You are sure to fall in love with the picturesque and pastoral landscape, the ever-changing ocean colors and the gentle sound of the waves lulling you to sleep at night. Walk 12 minutes to the world famous Hamoa beach (or a 2 minute drive) or 12 minutes in the other direction to the Venus pool- two of Hana’s most desired attractions – practically in our back yard!

About Ramaia Collins

Mary Carol Cabibi and Steven Gayle have been in love with the Hana area for more than twenty years. In 2016 they learned that Chris and Leokane Harrington-Pryor were interested in selling the Guest Houses at Malanai, and by April Mary Carol and Steve had become the new proprietors. They now live on the property with their family.

Ramaia Collins purchased this cottage in 2016

Why Ramaia Collins chose Hāna

The previous owners purchased this property in 2001 and worked continuously to create a paradise for themselves, their family and friends. In 2005 they began to offer this unique experience to the public. The new proprietors have retained all of the staff, and have maintained all of the landscaping, amenities, and warm aloha that the Guest houses at Malanai have become famous for. Only two of the homes on the large property are available to the public. As one of only three legally permitted vacation rental properties in the area, The Guest Houses at Malanai are often booked months in advance and are well deserving of their consistent #1 rating and stellar reviews.

What makes this cottage unique

The Guest Houses at Malanai are located in the Maka'alae area of Hana, about 3 miles south of Hana Town. This area is considered the most desirable of Hana due to its close proximity to world famous Hamoa Beach and the Venus Pool, as well as the gentle breezes and open landscape which keep it cooler and more comfortable than other locations in the area. Maka'alae was once the fishing village of the area and boasts some of the most breathtaking coastline of all Maui. During whale season, it is the perfect place to see their migration and sometimes even hear them playing at night. Our rental cottages are both situated in a completely private setting, amid glorious landscaping that has been lovingly nurtured by the previous owners for more than a decade.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Aloha Guests,

The "Guest Houses at Malanai" are two separate homes on part of our two acre property in Hana. Both homes have been meticulously renovated and are constantly maintained. We began offering these homes as guest accomodations in April 2005 and they have been incredibly popular from the beginning.

Living on the property allows us to provide you with consistently clean and impeccably well cared for homes. We feel fortunate to enjoy Hana everyday and our dream has been to create a unique and beautiful place to share with our friends and guests.

Hana is a very special paradise and your stay here should reflect that. We believe that our guest homes offer the best in quality, elegance, location and comfort that Hana has to offer! Regarding all the comments above, we do not have the option to make any changes to guest comments submitted, we can only decline them so they are not displayed. We have never declined an entry and we appreciate the glowing reveiws and heartfelt comments of our guests. This business is important to us and our efforts have obviously paid off. We hope you will be the next guests to enjoy The Guest Houses at Malanai and the Hana area.

Such a dreamy oasis in paradise

  • 5 of 5

We had such a amazing time in your Ohana, thank you for having us. From our late arrival and departure, we appreciate your care and commitment to providing us with such loving service. This home is magical, the property is peaceful and private. Location was so great, close to Hana, and the beach. The cool breeze from the ocean was refreshing. No air conditioning, but we managed. The bathtub was like being a princess in a fairy tale. I'm 5'9" and I rarely get to take a bath in a tub that is long enough and deep enough! That was the cherry on top! We experienced a flat tire on our rental, and the staff were so kind and sympathetic. The set back cause our delay checking out, but again the housekeeper and owner were very patient with us and supportive. Thank you so much for welcoming us into your home! We home to be back some day. Mahalo!

Dreamy Cottage in Hana

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for only one night towards the end of our week in Maui. I knew I wanted to make the drive to Hana (a must do!), but I also knew that I wanted to take our time and really take it all in. This would mean finding a place out in Hana to stay overnight, so that we didn't have to rush out there and then drive the long way back all in one day. The answer to my search was this little cottage. It was perfection for 2 people.

The booking process was super simple, even though not all the booking could be done through VRBO. It's okay, hopping out of the site to make the payment and agree to the rental terms was no big deal. The process was smooth and Jacques was responsive to any questions.

The directions were easy to follow to get to the property, but I am glad that we were able to arrive before sunset so that we could find it even easier (there aren't a lot of street lights past the little town of Hana, but I think that's what give that area more charm!). We arrived to the cottage and found the doors unlocked, screen doors closed awaiting our arrival. The keys were on the entry table, and we took a look around. Everything you would need for a longer stay is included in the house - wifi, kitchen stuff, towels, etc. Everything was tidy and even though there is no AC, there was a nice breeze going through the house. The fans came in handy at night, just to get the air to move around. I have to be honest...I'm an AC person, and was worried that it would be too hot or humid to be comfortable. But it must be the location of the house that gives it a nice breeze, and it was fairly cool at night (mid-high 70s). The bathroom was super clean, but take notice of the sign about accidentally holding onto the shower curtain to get your balance. The bottom of the tub is narrower than you think, which might make you feel unbalanced.

Overall, this cottage is PERFECTION. The only regret I have about the place is not booking more nights; one night is just not enough!

p.s. There were these little lizards that inhabit the cottage. They aren't bothersome (like, they don't climb on you or even get close to where you are). Don't be surprised if they make an appearance during your stay....they are cute little guys!

Wonderful Get Away !

  • 5 of 5

We ended our stay on Maui with three nights here and loved it! Listening to the ocean shore and breeze at nite! We have been to Wailea, Maui many times and only did day trips to Hana. It was so nice to take a few days and be in "old world Hawaii" for a while. The cottage is absolutely beautiful in a beautiful location! Being a carpenters/cabinet makers daughter I could not help but appreciate this Victorian era beauty and how beautifully it has been restored. This place has such a special feel about it and the owners are great! They checked in with a couple of times just to make sure all was well and see if we needed anything that was not provided. When we arrived there was fresh fruit from the surrounding trees and music playing. Thursday nite one of the owners sings at the local hotel while local Auntie's perform the Hula. Again puts you in an old Hawaiian feel while they sing. This was fantastic and great cocktails! Don't pass up this place!
