About Sue Gray

Richard and Allan moved to Colorado Springs from Austin, Texas in 2003 to enjoy retirement and everything Colorado has to offer. We built our home and gardens in the Victorian Style to fit the neighborhood. Allan retired from the telecommunications industry and Richard retired from the interior design industry. We share the interests of gardening, and love to travel. We have been to many countries around the world. Our favorite way to travel is staying in Self Catering Houses. We look forward to giving you the same wonderful experience in our cottage, that we have enjoyed during our travels.

Sue Gray purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Sue Gray chose Colorado Springs

This completely renovated Cottage was built in 1898. It is adjacent to our home which was built in 2009. This neighborhood is part of the historic district of Old Colorado City. We choose to build our Victorian style home here because we think it is the friendliest neighborhood in the city. Don't be alarmed if people stop and talk with you as they are on their morning or afternoon walk through the neighborhood. We also enjoy that the area is very eclectic with character that many other parts of town are lacking. The location is very central in the city. We are slightly on the west side of town which gives easy access to the tourist friendly city of Manitou and the mountains beyond. Oh, and the best part of living in this great city is the magnificent views of 'America's Mountain', Pikes Peak. I never get tired of this ever changing scenery. Richard is a native of Colorado. He spent his professional years in Austin, Texas. Retired now, the choice to move back to Colorado was an easy one as the weather is simply the best. The winters beautiful with many sunny days and the summer days are warm with cooling evenings and nights. Just perfect! Colorado Springs has the amenities of a large city, but still the feel of a small town. So we welcome you to come and enjoy this city that we love and call home.

What makes this cottage unique

Tranquility! Comfort! Relaxation! Security!

Whether you're in Colorado Springs for business or pleasure you can come home to the cottage knowing you will rest after a long hard day of work or sightseeing. Enjoy a drink on the Island patio with the sound of water flowing while the sun is setting. Enjoy the cool summer evenings in conversation amidst the beauty of the gardens. Come and enjoy what we get to enjoy every day! Oh and the best part is you don't have to do any of the work!

Perfection in every way. Tranquil Waters Cottage is beautiful, peaceful, comfortable and spotlessly clean. Everything your eye rests on is in harmony and produces a feeling of restful calmness. I so thoroughly enjoyed my nine days at Tranquil Waters, I booked two future stays before I left!

Richard and Allan are perfect hosts--gracious, considerate, thoughtful and with a keen eye for details--a gorgeous bouquet of flowers awaited my arrival, along with a dozen of the freshest eggs from their hens and a bottle of wine. They are there to help if you need anything, but are not in the least intrusive; the cottage is a private oasis. The grounds are spectacular and there's a mountain view from the front door and patio. As a solo woman traveler visiting my son at Colorado College, I appreciated the security of the locked gate and fence around the property (which, as with everything there, was beautifully done and blended in perfectly with the landscaping), even though the neighborhood is very safe. It was just a nice extra touch.

Tranquil Waters is in an ideal location within walking distance to charming shops, a wide variety of affordable restaurants, a park and Mountain Mama Natural Foods, where I found unusual cards, gifts, delicious breads, and "home" made soups and sandwiches. They have a deli, coffee bar and a great smoothies, too.

As a rather particular traveler with high expectations, I am happy to say that Tranquil Waters is above and beyond. Richard and Allan have created a warm, welcoming, truly delightful home-away-from-home.

Beautiful Garden Setting

  • 5 of 5

We were very happy with our stay at Tranquil Waters Cottage. It was a cozy, quiet, and comfortable home away from home. The best part is, the cottage being nestled in its own secret garden. This garden is alongside the rest of the owner's property that is mainly all garden, with a Koi pond and seating area. It is just beautiful and gave me many ideas to use in my own garden. Richard and Allan are really nice guys to get to know, both with a great sense of humor. They had lots of ideas where to eat and explore. Both of them were around, but never intrusive. It was a really nice stay and we would stay here again.

Exceptional!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 3 nights and were looking for a place that was quiet and relaxing, but close enough to Old Colorado City that we could enjoy the area. This cottage was perfect! Before arriving, the hosts were great about directions and any questions we had. Upon arriving, we were given a nice tour of the property and great ideas for were to eat, travel, etc. The property had wonderful places to sit outside and enjoy the gardens, sunshine, and tranquility. Inside is nicely decorated and fully equipped. Would love to return sometime!

I am originally from CO and came back to visit friends that live in OCC - I was looking for quiet, peaceful and relaxing..NAILED IT! Grounds were stunning, I absolutely loved sitting and enjoying company listening to the water falls and Koi jumping. Cottage was a great size - comfy bed, great kitchen, nice sitting area in front with lots of sunlight. Thank you so much gentlemen - you both are so hospitable. Hope mom is doing great!! All the best~ Pam

Excellent experience, all around!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a romantic, private retreat for our anniversary. While originally hesitant about having owners on-site, the reviews from previous guests assured us that we would have privacy. Not only did we have total privacy, but the cottage and garden were even more beautiful than the pictures could express. We were cheerfully greeted upon arrival by both Richard and Allan. They happily gave us an orientation to the grounds, some tips for restaurants and activities and then....they vamoosed. After that, it was just the two of us. Food for the koi magically appeared for us to sprinkle out every morning, but we were never once intruded upon.

The cottage has a very comfortable bed and pillows, though the bed is a bit tall. The furniture in the living room, breakfast room, and patio were also comfy. You simply must have breakfast or cocktails on the floating patio! The kitchen has non-stick cookware, which isn't my favorite, but there were enough pots & pans to make full meals, as well as serviceable cutlery, glasses, etc. When we entered the kitchen we found a gift of eggs from the garden hens, a bottle of wine, as well as a bouquet of fresh flowers AND a bag of coffee. That was all a very nice touch.

The cottage is a fairly easy walking distance to the shops and restaurants in Old Colorado City. Depending upon how far you want to go, and upon how many times you go back to the cottage for lunch or to change, you may want to drive to some further shops and restaurants. The proximity to I-25 and HWY 24 made driving into other parts of Colorado Springs quick and easy. It took 10 minutes to get to Millibo Art Theater, 10 Minutes to the Pioneer Museum, 2 Minutes to Walgreens and a grocery store. The Garden of the Gods and Manitou Springs were also very close. All together, an excellent location. The neighborhood is attractive, with lots of cute Victorian homes, but nothing rivals the Tranquil Waters Cottage as far as attractive landscaping and handsome home.

Richard and Allan have another property next door, and there is an impressive aqua-ponic greenhouse and garden. We were able to find them easily when we wanted to ask about the grounds, and we were given a tour and thorough explanation of the green house's workings. That is worth checking out during your stay.

Thank you, Richard and Allan, for creating such a wonderful retreat. We will most certainly keep this lovely rental in our contacts for future trips to the area!
