The Convent is a classic Bahamian coral stone home, constructed in 1834, and restored by interior designer Tom Scheer with recent updates by Margaret Naeve, antique dealer and designer from Houston, Texas. The Convent once served as a home to the nuns teaching at the Catholic school. It's conveniently located in the heart of Dunmore town, one block from the bay, steps from the Rock House and the Landing, and a short walk from Harbor Island's famous three mile pink sands beach.
Accommodations include four bedrooms (three above, and one at ground level), each with an en suite bath. The master bedroom, with king size bed, has a beautiful white-washed peck cypress cathedral ceiling, and access to the spacious wrap-around porch. Two guest rooms are located on either side of the master bedroom. One is fitted with a queen-size bed, and the second with twin beds. Both rooms have views to the garden, and open to the porch. A study alcove with writing desk is located adjacent to the upstairs bedrooms.
The balcony/porch overlooks the garden and pool. Two daybeds make this a perfect place for outdoor lounging.
A fourth bedroom is located on the ground floor, situated off the garden and courtyard. This bedroom has its own private entrance.
The entry to the home leads to open living and dining areas. Ideal for family enjoyment, the living space is furnished with comfortable seating by Janus et Cie, blended with a mixture of French and Swedish antiques.
The kitchen features peck cypress cabinets and stainless steel appliances. Open upper shelves showcase the beautiful old blue and white Cuban tiles.
The outdoor space is as inviting as the interior of this lovely home - accentuated by one of the largest pools on the island. A large covered porch with a dining table and spacious couches is adjacent to the pool and garden.
The convent has air conditioning, television, and internet access. The attentive housekeeper can arrange anything needed to make your Harbor Island stay enjoyable.

What makes this House unique
After several vacation trips to Harbor island, I set my heart on finding my own house on the island. By good fortune, the Covent became available, and I fell in love with it at first sight. You will too!

What A Wonderful Surprise!
My family (wife and three daughters ages 8, 11, 13) had a wonderful week at the Convent.
Vivien, the owner, was fantastic. I had a lot of questions about the house when we were considering our options and she was very honest and responsive to all our questions. Once we booked it she provided us a detailed list of resources on the island, places to eat and things to do. When we arrived, we were greeted by her amazing staff - Clenide, Smith and Rocky. They were so nice, helpful and happy - what a wonderful group of people. The house was always clean and everything was great.
The house was a pleasant surprise. I told Vivien that she needs to update the pictures because they don't do the house justice. There are three nice bedrooms upstairs, each with their own bathroom. Both floors and all rooms were air conditioned. The property is quite large and the house is quite high so it also gets wonderful breezes. Our favorite area was the large wrap-around balcony with large sofas and lounge chairs on the upper level. After a day in the sun and a late afternoon swim in the pool, we loved lounging up there, watching the sun set beyond the palm trees. We actually used this area more that the two large tables that are in the pictures on the covered patio below. Of course the pool is huge - comparable to the ones we saw at some of the hotels in size. The kids loved it - we never needed to heat it as it was always warm and refreshing. If you have kids bring a raft or a float - the people before us left one which we enjoyed. The lawn and gardens are beautiful and expansive. We never used half the house as we basically used the outside patio for breakfast, swam in the pool, lounged on the upstairs balcony and slept. Clenide washed whatever laundry we had (the island is very casual so don't bring too much) and there were about a dozen fresh beach/pool towels every day. We never used the wonderful kitchen or the huge grill outside, although Rocky offered to get us some fish and lobster from the dock and set everything up. It is just we would be off to Arthur's or somewhere delicious for an early breakfast, then the beach or a boating adventure, lunch, more beach and head home around 4pm for a swim and cocktails before heading out to dinner. There is also another bedroom and bathroom on the 1st floor - more room than we needed. We enjoyed the location in town and could walk everywhere. We will definately return! Thank you Vivien!
The house is fabulous-----decorated with very expensive Swedish antiques. It has so much charm!
My family and I loved staying at The Convent! The house is more than charming ----decorated with beautiful Swedish antiques---and even with it being decorated with the very expensive antiques, it still keeps a definite feeling of a very livable and relaxing beach house. Swedish antiques have very clean, simple lines with no fuss so it all feels very open and refreshing. The house has many outdoor spaces and we used all of them! I always had breakfast in the small garden patio outside of the dining area. In the late afternoons, we sat on the patio overlooking the main street so we could watch the people going by either walking or riding in golf carts. A great way to see the local Bahamian natives! We used the patio overlooking the pool when we came in from the beach . We could take a dip in the pool rinsing off the salt and sand from being at the beach all day and then relax on the beautiful lavender and white comfy cushions on the patio overlooking the pool. The kitchen with its blue and white antique tiles from Portugal was a joy to cook in and had all the equipment and dishes you might need. The entry with pecky cypress walls welcomed us every day with the large white saarinen center table where we could leave our keys, etc on. We never felt the need to lock the house. The entry also has a hanging straw hat collection that we could borrow from when going to the beach. The location of the house is perfect for wherever you want to go. We used a golf cart while there and could be at the beach in less than 5 minutes, be at The Landing in 5 minutes, grocery store 5 minutes away---its location in the center of town was a grand convenience in every way! There is even a great bakery down the street 2 minutes away that makes fresh coconut bread every morning---among many other delicious confections for breakfast or lunch. The house is fully equipped including a washer and dryer and ice machine. There is a gardener, a housekeeper and a house manager that come everyday. The house manager is great and tends to any problem that you might have. He also is a fabulous
guitarist and singer. We saw him perform at the Pink Sands Hotel one evening. I bet he might even perform for you if you decided to entertain at home one evening! I can't say enough about this house----I hope to go back many more times. Harbour Island beaches are the most beautiful in the world!
This is our third year in a row at Convent and we fully expect next year will be four.
Harbour Island is a special place on its own merits – but the combination of location, space, décor, outdoor space/pool, staff and extremely gracious owner (Vivien) at Convent conspire to deliver an exceptional island experience.
HI is about being outside (particularly the stunning beach) - but after spending long hours at the beach – we loved coming back to relax by the pool (sometimes it gets windy on the beach), grill and host friends in the extensive outdoor seating areas.
To assist with your stay, Vivien has assembled a dedicated team of on island personnel (Clenide, Smith and Rocky). The ad mentions housekeeping included – that understates things a bit. Clenide (as pleasant as can be) is at the house for 4-5 hrs a day:
• All bathrooms/bedrooms tended daily
• All floors swept/mopped daily
• Fresh towels daily - linens as necessary/requested (the sheets are ironed!)
• Personal laundry items washed per request (she ironed our t-shirts!)
I mentioned we like to grill a few nights and Smith always ensures the outdoor area is fully cleaned and ready to go. If you need charcoal/lighter fluid - just let Smith know.
We had a great stay at Convent – and look forward to returning next year!
Thanks again Vivien!
First time to H.I and such a wonderful introduction. The house is well located for all amenities, beautifully designed and the Owner couldn't have been more helpful. We would love to come back!
The island and the house was relaxing. Great staff
The house was old and charming. The neighborhood was very friendly. Everyone involved with the property were super attentive, but gave us our space.
The perfect Bahamian home, tons of charm and beautifully appointed.
