Overview

About the property

The Convent is a classic Bahamian coral stone home, constructed in 1834, and restored by interior designer Tom Scheer with recent updates by Margaret Naeve, antique dealer and designer from Houston, Texas. The Convent once served as a home to the nuns teaching at the Catholic school. It's conveniently located in the heart of Dunmore town, one block from the bay, steps from the Rock House and the Landing, and a short walk from Harbor Island's famous three mile pink sands beach.

Accommodations include four bedrooms (three above, and one at ground level), each with an en suite bath. The master bedroom, with king size bed, has a beautiful white-washed peck cypress cathedral ceiling, and access to the spacious wrap-around porch. Two guest rooms are located on either side of the master bedroom. One is fitted with a queen-size bed, and the second with twin beds. Both rooms have views to the garden, and open to the porch. A study alcove with writing desk is located adjacent to the upstairs bedrooms.

The balcony/porch overlooks the garden and pool. Two daybeds make this a perfect place for outdoor lounging.

A fourth bedroom is located on the ground floor, situated off the garden and courtyard. This bedroom has its own private entrance.

The entry to the home leads to open living and dining areas. Ideal for family enjoyment, the living space is furnished with comfortable seating by Janus et Cie, blended with a mixture of French and Swedish antiques.

The kitchen features peck cypress cabinets and stainless steel appliances. Open upper shelves showcase the beautiful old blue and white Cuban tiles.

The outdoor space is as inviting as the interior of this lovely home - accentuated by one of the largest pools on the island. A large covered porch with a dining table and spacious couches is adjacent to the pool and garden.

The convent has air conditioning, television, phone and internet access. The attentive housekeeper can arrange anything needed to make your Harbor Island stay enjoyable.

What makes this house unique

After several vacation trips to Harbor island, I set my heart on finding my own house on the island. By good fortune, the Covent became available, and I fell in love with it at first sight. You will too!

Beautiful, elegant, comfortable, perfectly restored ancient house. Great pool, huge yard.

  • 5 of 5

We had a perfect visit!!! The ancient house is so welcoming. The owner is lovely and gracious. Her staff are outstanding!

The wonderful old house has been restored perfectly. It's historical character is highlighted in the outstanding work and materials. The interior design is beautiful and understated, with spaces that are large and comfortable. The linens are soft and luxurious. The house has central air conditioning which is amazing and unusual in very old houses in the Bahamas. The house is located between the beach in the harbor, at the edge of Dunmore town... It is near everything but quiet and peaceful.

Our party of eight people found plenty of spaces to be together and plenty of spaces for privacy. The kitchen is beautiful and functional with nice appliances… The ice machine is a real bonus! We prepared some amazing meals and enjoyed the ability to barbecue outside. The outdoor living space is great for evenings. The pool is fantastic! It remains very warm, heated only by the sun.

the most perfect house on the most perfect island

  • 5 of 5

we were there for my stepdaughters wedding and stayed at the Convent House. i cannot say enough about this amazing house. the location was great...everything is close on this small island. we were very close to numerous restaurants, shopping and the beach and harbor were just a 3 minutes golf cart ride away. every convenience has been taken into consideration in this amazing house. Vivien, the owner, is great to work with. Clenide the housekeeper and Smith attended our every need and always had a big smile. the kitchen is well appointed. plenty of room for everyone. we had 6 in the house. the groom stayed with us and had his own entrance. the pool is so refreshing and a welcome reprive at the end of a hot day. there are so many places to sit and relax and the interior design was nothing short of inspiring! needless to say we loved it and when we get back to Harbor Island we will stay here again.

We had the best week entertaining our English friends...the house is lovely and the pool so welcoming and refreshing after a day at the beach.

You can't go wrong renting this beautiful tasteful home. The owner was hugely helpful and present for all questions and needs. A five star rental!

The Convent did Not Disappoint

  • 5 of 5

I really like the Convent. First the owner is nice and wants one to enjoy one's stay. Further, the staff taking care of the house show up every day and do a good job. If you are looking for a place that is extremely quiet, the Convent is not for you. It is in town, and pretty noisy. That was not a problem for me, as I enjoyed being in a central location, and didn't mind the accompanying noise. The house itself is well done, and there are nice places to sit outside and enjoy a few days away from the real world.

Fabulous island getaway!

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed staying at the Convent! The home is beautiful. It has been restored perfectly and appointed with lovely antiques and comfy beds. The back patio is amazing and it has a giant pool! Hot water water works great and plenty of it for our group of 6 all showering at the same time. The house even has A/C if you need it! Location is excellent and so was the housekeeper! The bathrooms and kitchen are updated and very nice for the island! We had 6 in our group with this house could comfortably sleep 8.

Don't want to leave! 🐓

Great location and pool

  • 4 of 5

The Convent house is in the middle of town, close to everything. The house has a great history and fabulous decor. It's a little quirky for being such a big house. Everything is great in the master BR, one of the guest rooms has no a/c in the bathroom which can get really hot. The other guest room has a large bathroom but you have to go outside on the balcony (covered with shutters) to get there. Not a big deal but a little inconvenient as there is not one drawer or place to put anything in the bedroom. The pool and outdoor areas are fantastic. Great big lounges and sofa to nap on. We loved going to the beach all day and then coming back and relaxing at the pool. Great restaurants on the island and beautiful views everywhere.
