Situated on a quiet bike street two blocks from the famous Alberta Street. Our beautiful new indoor/outdoor living space has three skylights with an open floor plan designed for showcasing artwork. The brand new kitchen is designed for a chef.

Our 16 foot door opens for an 8 foot opening directly to the outdoors on the north side of our house. It feels special when you are in the space. Our very unique design has the main living space sunken for a real feel of the outdoors. The heated concrete floors automatically come on for comfort on cooler nights. Another favorite of our new house is the bathroom which includes a rain/massage shower head and a skylight to allow natural light in. The automatic ventilation system comes on when you are taking a shower and the tile floor is heated. And the kitchen is fabulous. I love to cook and have all of the best kitchen appliances and tools, including a steam oven.

I love to garden and I have planted tomatoes, herbs, lettuces, etc. Also, we have an apple, plum, fig and nectarine tree. Our guests will have access to any fresh vegetables or fruit that are ripe. Anything that is not ripe, we will eat when we return. If you love coffee, we have a Jura coffee/espresso maker, we'll leave instructions. Our office and both of our studios will be locked off, so you will come into the garden side entrance where you will enter into the living space.

Our neighborhood is fantastic with some of Portland's best restaurants, bakeries, boutique shops and festivals. Alberta Street is two blocks away for easy access to everything. To mention a few, Petite Provence to indulge in fresh pastries; Salt and Straw for the most unique ice creams; a couple of Portland's renowned restaurants including Beast and Aviary; many boutique shops, foot wear shops, art galleries, and a coffee shop on every corner. If you are here on the last Thursday of the month, Alberta street shuts out car traffic and vendors with jewelry, pottery, artworks, food carts, and the best dancing and street music around Fills the street for the festive 'Last Thursday'. Every Sunday, two blocks west from our house between 10am to 2pm is a farmers market with music, local foods and seafood.

There are three different bus stops withing a few blocks from our house. The closest is three blocks away, and the farthest is 7 blocks away, depending on the direction you want to go.

  • One bathroom is very modern and brand new with automatic floor heat and ventilation. The other bathroom is a traditional bathroom with a tub sink toilet and closet and a washer/dryer combo.

Beautiful and relaxing stay!

What a pleasure it was to stay in Karen's home. It was serene (especially wth all the beautiful art work), clean, and had a beautiful outside garden area to relax. We were so happy we chose this place as our home base while exploring Portland!

Great Alberta Arts location

We really enjoyed our stay. The remodeled part of the home is beautiful and comfortable. And we found the older part of the home fine - typical 70's bathroom and very comfortable king size bed in the master bedroom.

We loved sitting in the garden, and using the fire pit. We also cooked with fresh tomatoes and basil we picked there.

The location is great for enjoying the numerous shops and restaurants on Alberta St. Don't miss Petite Provence for breakfast!

We will stay here again if we return to Portland. Thanks Karen!

Some pros and cons

Pros:

Perfect location, very quiet, great ultra-modern remodel, easy parking, cool kitchen, pretty garden area

Cons:

Some of the space has been remodeled and it fantastic, the rest is not too nice. For example, in the bedroom there is plywood over the large window and the 2nd bath is ancient and ugly. A weird combination of new and dated. The whole place gets very hot in warm weather, especially the bedroom. The bedroom is too light for sleeping from the street light that shines right in the small windows that have no window covering. No washer/dryer yet available, though owner will consider adding for long-term renters. The TV in the bedroom has lousy instructions and takes a high tech genius to figure out.

Overall, owner and her neighbor are nice and helpful.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words in the pros. I thought I would address the cons. The west side windows in our bedroom do have perfectly cut to size white boards (not plywood) behind the curtains that are not noticeable unless you open the curtains. We have these to keep the room cooler in the summer by keeping the heat and light out. They were not meant to be moved. We only open the small windows on the north side of the bedroom facing the back yard. Those two small windows also have boards that were leaning on the floor by the dresser if you were trying to block out all of the normal street light, or daylight. We will be sure to clarify this with our future tenants, and include eye sleeping masks for people with extra light sensitivities. Our second bathroom was a remodel from a previous owner in the late 60's, early 70's. It's not my favorite choice of colors and materials either. But it is a second bathroom with a great shower head (in those days, they didn't have water flow restrictions, so the water pressure is really good in there), and a large counter area which is more convenient, just doesn't look as nice. As far as the heat, I hope you were able to read the instructions on how to keep the house cool. In Portland, we generally have cool nights, and once the exhaust fan is turned on, the house cools down easily in the night. But during really hot days, it's important to close all of the windows and doors, as well as put the outdoor sun shade down on the west sides before it gets too hot. This keeps the cool air in. It's written in our guest's book, but I will make sure to point that out with the next tenants. And as far as the TV remote, all of those "all-in-one" remotes can be confusing. We will take a look at the instructions and see if we can simplify somehow.

Great retreat in Portland

This house was exactly as described: clean, modern, filled with art, and comfortable. The owner and caretaker were easy to communicate with and made us feel entirely welcome. We especially enjoyed having access to the back garden with the fire pit and fragrant flowers. Location was excellent, just a short walk from NE Alberta St with all its restaurants and boutiques. The neighborhood was quiet at night and parking on the street was always available. All the owner's recommendations were spot on - don't miss the ice cream at Salt & Straw. We used the house as a base for visiting the city and more far-flung attractions: the coast, Willamette Valley wineries, and the Columbia River gorges. We'd love to return!
